Success for Students is at the Heart of What We Do
Schools are busy and dynamic places, and Term 2 is one of the busiest of the year. This newsletter will give our school community a glimpse of the wonderful things that are happening at our school. There are excursions, camps, guest speakers, community events, big ticket assessments including NAPLAN and exams, competitions, whole school activities and staff learning alongside students.
These extra opportunities and events enhance student learning and the Belridge team do this for one reason ... they want success for our students. Student success is at the heart of everything we do and there is one pre-condition to this success, care.
Care is critical, care is the foundation that great schools are built on. At Belridge Secondary College we care about the success of students, care about their well-being and care about them beyond the classroom walls.
As a school, we will continue to achieve great academic results, provide extensive pathways and specialist programs for students, and keep busy with all of the wonderful extras we do. More importantly, we will continue to care about our students and foster their dreams and aspirations. This is a commitment we have made to our school community, to the families that trust us with their most precious asset ... their children.
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read our newsletter. As you sift through the articles in this one, I can guarantee you that they are written by people who have your children’s success forefront in their hearts and minds.

Annual Open Board Meeting
Monday 5 August at 6pm
As part of the school’s approach to developing parent/college partnerships, parents, staff and community members are invited to attend the next open meeting of the College Board on the above date and time to be held in the library. This is an opportunity for the school community and parents to work together and support our children.
The Board welcomes any ideas and thoughts on the college’s future in order to enhance the educational experience of every student who attends Belridge Secondary College.
Please be aware that the Board’s mandate is for the whole of college plans and projections for the future and does not involve itself in the day to day operations of the college.
The meeting is not for anyone to discuss individual cases. There are many avenues open to parents within the college to resolve an individual issue; for instance speaking directly with the teacher concerned, Year Coordinators, Student Services, Associate Principal, Vice Principals or indeed the Principal.

Year 7 & 9 NAPLAN
The 2019 NAPLAN testing cycle has just been completed. All the Year 7 & 9 students sat literacy and numeracy tests. I wish to congratulate the students on their positive approach to these tests as it was a stressful time for them due to the first time attempt of doing all assessments online. I would also like to thank Mr Notarpietro for his organisation. Co-ordinating 380 students to sit four tests, while the remainder of the college followed a normal timetable, was a massive task. A huge thank you to the teaching staff who conducted the tests, the clerical staff who assisted with the log on details for all students and finally Ms Cassidy and Mr Robartson for all their technical assistance throughout the 2 week testing period.
Results of student performance will be forwarded to parents/caregivers once they become available. Year 9 NAPLAN student performance is now linked to secondary WACE certification. Students achieving Band 8 in Year 9 NAPLAN will be deemed to have met the minimum literacy and numeracy requirements for secondary WACE certification. Students who do not achieve Band 8 are required to sit the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (OLNA) tests in year 10 and subsequent years until they meet the minimum standards.
2019 Open Day – Wednesday 22 May
Over 150 prospective parents had the opportunity to view the College on Wednesday 22 May. The aim of the tour was to give parents the opportunity to view our college at work, including the comprehensive Year 7 to 12 programs, our academic extension programs, the specialist Cricket and Fashion & Design programs and the elite Netball and Arts programs.
Interested students in Years 5 & 6 participated in a taster course of cricket, netball, music, dance and fashion & design. This half-day event gave students the opportunity to see and participate in sessions that outline the benefits of each of these elite programs. 2020 Enrolment packs were available on the day. Additional enrolment packs have now been delivered to feeder primary schools. Enrolment packs are also available directly from the College.
School Sickness Procedures
I would like to remind parents/caregivers of the school protocols should a child fall ill during the day. During class time, the class teacher will make an assessment and send the child to Student Services. If the child feels ill during a break time they are to make their own way to Student Services. The school will then contact the parent/caregiver if required.
Students are not to contact their parents/caregivers directly to be picked up because they are not feeling well. Thank you.

Welcome Back!
Term 2 is well and truly underway now. Traditionally, it is a busy term for parents and students, with important decisions to be made. During the term, Years 9, 10 and 11 students will receive important information about subject selections for 2022. It is important for students to attend to these selections as early as possible and seek advice from the administration and their teachers whenever necessary. The choices students make will determine which subjects run at the school next year. THESE FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ON TIME.
Exams
This term, Years 10, 11 and 12 students will all be doing exams.
Year 11 and 12 during weeks 7 and 8, and Year 10 Thursday and Friday of Week 8. The Senior School students do exams and some do work placement. Students on Work Place Learning must still sit any scheduled exams. It is important that these students study consistently throughout the term to avoid stress. Students should continue to ask their teachers for exam and study tips. Parents can help by reinforcing the importance of study at home.
On the 10 and 11 June, the Year 10 students have exams in Maths, English, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences.
We hope these will help guide subject selections for 2022 and give students a chance to practice study and examination skills.
Please note, exams are held periods 1 to 4 and students then go home at lunchtime.
Reports
The Semester 1 reports are important for all students to assess where they are at. Years 10 and 11 students should carefully analyse their current success and progress when making selections for 2022.
Year 12 students need to reassess the time spent on, and the effectiveness of, their study if their results are not what they expected. Remember the school staff are always ready to assist students.
All Year 12 Students
Year 12 students will soon be asked to complete their student declaration and permission online for SCSA. Please read the following carefully:-
Parent Information:
Student Declaration and Permission online
All Year 12 students wanting to complete their WACE this year need to complete the online student declaration and permission. Details of this process are listed below.
NOTE: The deadline for students to complete this process online is 17 JUNE 2021.
I suggest this is completed before exams and work placement.
We will provide times during Weeks 5 and 6 for students to do this during form time, but students who miss these need to complete it at home.
What is the Student Declaration?
Year 12 students need to declare that they are aware of the requirements to achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and for sitting the WACE examinations. These requirements are listed in the Year 12 Information Handbook which is available on the Authority website at:
http://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/publications/year-12-information
(An information letter was also emailed to parents on 4 May via Connect)
In closing, I wish all our students a successful term and look forward to them achieving their best.

OLNA: (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments)
The OLNA can be taken twice each year, in the March and September rounds. All students who did not achieve Band 8, 9 or 10 in Year 9 NAPLAN are required to sit the OLNA until they achieve Category 3 in all components. We have recently received results for Round 1 OLNA 2019, with over half of our Year 10 students now meeting the Category 3 Standard in Literacy and Numeracy. A decreasing number of students are yet to meet the standard in one or more of the Numeracy, Reading or Writing assessments, and will need to re-sit the OLNA in September. Students have been notified if they need to re-sit any assessments.
NAPLAN Online: (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy)
As this newsletter is published, we will have just completed NAPLAN Online tests in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy. Although we, along with many schools, experienced some connectivity problems with the first (writing) assessment, the online tests with interactive features have proved engaging, with many students commenting on how much they enjoyed the online tests. Any student who felt their performance was adversely affected by connectivity or browser issues was offered the opportunity to re-sit the test, with only fifteen students taking up the opportunity. Our English and Maths teachers deserve a vote of thanks for the extra professional learning required to act as a test administrator, which they completed in their own time, and for their professionalism in managing computer glitches while tests were underway.
VET (Vocational Education and Training) and ADWPL (Authority Developed Workplace Learning)
Our senior school VET students have now completed Semester 1, and are mostly participating in a two week block of ADWPL with a large variety of employers, while the ATAR students complete their exams. Mrs Fuhrmann, our VET Co-ordinator, and Mrs Dastlik, School Officer, have worked incredibly hard to ensure over 120 of our VET students have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming work placement. This year has seen an increased requirement to visit all employers pre-placement, develop a ‘risk management plan’ for each student placement and discuss this with employers prior to the student starting in the work place. Our VET and General course teachers are also to be thanked for their support in contacting and visiting employers during the placement.
In VET, we have successfully negotiated with North Metropolitan TAFE to auspice our qualifications (previously delivered with VETIS) in Automotive, Business, Construction and Engineering. We have now signed a memorandum of agreement with NMTAFE, ensuring all Year 12 students meeting the requirements will be awarded their certificate by NMTAFE in November of this year. Again, a vote of thanks to the staff involved in this transition, as they had to produce a number of complex documents outlining their vocational knowledge and industry currency prior to being accepted as NMTAFE third party trainers.

Attendance
It is evident that attendance at school is directly linked with student achievement. If a student is absent, they miss out on vital information delivered in the five classes they have that day. This puts them a whole day behind their classmates who are in attendance. We urge you to consider whether your child’s absence is necessary and, if so, please let the school know at your earliest convenience via phone call, text message, e-mail or letter/doctor’s certificate. Every two weeks, a letter is posted home with any absences that are still unexplained. This is your opportunity to give us feedback as to the reason your child could not attend school. If we do not receive a response from this, it becomes an unauthorised absence and further procedures will follow.
Remember, any more than 5 days absence in an average term directly impacts on a student’s Good Standing and will affect their ability to attend any activities that are not a compulsory requirement of their courses. Students are reminded that if they come late or leave early, regardless of the reason, they must sign out in Student Services.
The Education Department sets a benchmark that every student should attend school 90% or more of the time. Belridge Secondary College wants to promote these choices for our young people and is working hard with families for this to occur. The last three years has seen us slowly increase the percentage of students attending 90% or more of the time from 63.5% of the school population in 2017 to 66.3% in 2019. A young person’s success in later life has a direct correlation with school attendance and your support with this is greatly appreciated.
Mobile Phones/Electronic Devices
This serves as a reminder that at Belridge Secondary College, we have a zero tolerance approach to using mobile phones or electronic devices during class time. This includes walking between classes or when a student leaves to get a drink or go to the toilet. In every instance, a student will be asked to surrender their phone to a staff member if it is visible or ringing during class time. The Electronic Device Policy will then dictate at what stage of the process the student is at and will go from there.
Students needing to contact home or vice-versa during the day, are to come to Student Services where a call can be facilitated, rather than doing it directly through a mobile phone. If you are not sure of what the policy is, please see your child’s planner or our school website.
Uniform
Belridge Secondary College has seen a great start to the year and it was wonderful to see so many students wearing the new uniform. Please be aware that with the impending inclement weather fast approaching, wet weather clothing may need to be utilised. There are two options to help keep your child warm/dry that are available through Uniform Concepts, our uniform supplier located in Joondalup. We urge you to prepare early for this, as a student wearing any items of clothing not complying with the school’s dress code will be directed to change/remove that item immediately.
Road Safety
It has come to my attention, through several calls from concerned members of the public and our school community, that there are still unsafe behaviours taking place in students getting themselves to and from school. Can I please remind everyone:
- When crossing a road, look both ways.
- Do not run in front of cars, no matter how much of a rush you are in.
- When alighting from a bus, walk to the rear of the bus before crossing the road rather than in front where you can’t see traffic.
- Ride bikes safely and wear a helmet.
- Students are not permitted to ride their bikes on school grounds and must be aware of staff cars in the respective car parks. There have been several narrow misses of late ...
- Students to ride in appropriate areas and not through neighbouring house’s garden beds, gravel verges and the like.
- In all of these situations, when it is you vs a car, you will come off second best.
- Finally, please remember that when you wear our school uniform, you are an ambassador for the school. The great community notices your behaviours and choices and this is a direct reflection on us all.

Carole's friendly and helpful manner contributed to the smooth running of the office, as well as to the success of the school team. She was proven to be a respected staff member who filled many roles including those of mentor, confidante and a good friend to many. We will miss Carole very much, but wish her the best in her retirement and adventures that lie ahead.

Year 8 students from Belridge, accompanied by several members of the school staff, attended the school’s annual C8 camp at the Swan Valley Adventure Centre from the 15th to 17th May.
As part of the C8 Camp, students were encouraged to Communicate, Collaborate, and Connect with their Year 8 Community. Students had ample opportunity to also demonstrate attributes such as Courage as they Challenged themselves. The activities on the camp linked in with past programs intended to build a more inclusive school community by bringing students together while strengthening relationships between our Year 8 students.
Students participated in a range of day time activities including Team Building, Catapult Construction, Commando Course, Flying Fox, Bush Craft, Canoeing, Crate Stack Challenge and Kite Building/Flying. After dark, students enjoyed some outdoor night time activities on the Wednesday night, while staying indoors on the Thursday night for a quiz night & disco. Students worked together in 9 teams for the duration of the camp and were awarded scores for how well they worked together. At the conclusion of the camp, it was the Red team that finished up with the highest overall score and they will be rewarded with a special lunch at school.
Some individual awards were also given out at the camp to three of our students. Those awards, as voted by their fellow students, were awarded to:
“Most Transformed”
the person who has really come out of their shell, challenged themselves and connected with new people. Awarded to:
Isabella Williams
“Most Encouraging”
the person who has been enthusiastic, encouraging and supportive of other students. Awarded to:
Alexandra Rodriguez
“The Happy Cup”
the person who has continually been positive, committed and helpful. Awarded to:
Callum Robertson
Thank you to all of the students who participated and behaved so well on the camp and thank you to all of the staff who made it possible.

Mrs Wright's Year 9 classes recently learnt about WWI and the conditions faced by the soldiers on the front. Students got to taste test some ANZAC biscuits, although they were very different to the original 'hardtack' biscuits that were eaten by the men in the trenches and sent in care packages by the women from the home front. They also learnt about the history of ANZAC day and its first commemoration in 1916. Later that day the whole school commemorated the deaths and sacrifices of all the men and women who have served in conflict for Australia.

ANZAC Day is a special day of remembrance, when we take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices the Australian Defence Forces made on the shores of Gallipoli and during the many other conflicts our nation has provided support for. Belridge Secondary College staff and students took time to reflect for ANZAC Day at the start of this term, by participating in a commemoration reading, held by the Student Council. We wish to acknowledge this special day for our school community - we pay our respects to those who have defended and protected our nations during times of war, and peacekeeping operations. Lest we forget.
After great success at the Meraki Performing Arts Festival in 2018, the Belridge Dance Company will again be performing in 2019.
25 students from Years 7-12 will perform their piece 'Body Love' at the Perth Convention Centre on Wednesday 19 June. We would love your support at this event! Tickets are selling fast and can be purchased HERE!
Chaplain's Fundraising Dinner 2019
The Chaplain’s Dinner held in the school café on the 8th May 2019 was a chance for our new school Chaplain, Phil Leenman, to be involved in this hugely popular and successful annual event. The theme for this year was the Chinese Year of the Pig which was reflected throughout the night through the food, mocktails and decorations in the café.
Once again, the Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students did an outstanding job preparing and serving a fantastic 4 course meal. The night provided an opportunity for Year 12 students to be formally assessed on their hospitality skills by our Registered Training Organisation, HGT (Hospitality Group Training) and the feedback received from Sarah Baker, who was observing the students throughout the night, was glowing. She was extremely impressed by their professionalism and their interactions with their guests. While the Year 12’s were looking after the front of house, the Year 11’s were working equally tirelessly at the back of house ensuring that meals were prepared and delivered on time and doing the thankless task of washing dishes. The menu for the night included:
Hors d’oeuvres
Vegetarian Spring Rolls
Pan fried Pork Gyozas
Mocktails
Entrée
Chicken Noodle Soup
Thai Style Creamy Pumpkin Soup
Main Course
Choice of either Pulled Pork or Hoisin Chicken served with roasted broccolini, accompanied with an Asian Slaw and a Crunchy Noodle Salad and steamed rice.
Dessert
Traditional Sugee Cake
Mango Parfait
The students were again supported and helped throughout the night by the staff from Home Economics, Mrs Judith Clively, Miss Maddi Jones, Mrs Jenny Dwyer, Ms Micael Corless and Ms Cheryl. Thanks also to Mrs Gendle’s business students for their production of menus, tickets and invitations for the night and to the ladies in the front office for their coordination of ticket sales. The night was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone involved.

Champion Schools Volleyball Competition
On Wednesday 10th May, Belridge Secondary College participated in the Champion Schools Volleyball Competition which was held at the Warwick Stadium. We had two senior girls’ teams representing the College and they competed in ‘B’ and ‘C’ division. The ‘C’ Division Senior Girls’ team played with determination and unwavering enthusiasm and are to be commended on the way they represented the College. The girls successfully won 4 out of 5 games and were runners-up in their division. This was a great effort and one that the College and the girls themselves should be very proud of. The ‘B’ Division Senior Girls’ team displayed some extremely high quality volleyball throughout the tournament, playing against some formidable competition. They won 1 out of their 3 round games and went on to win their 5th position play-off game. Even though we finished 5th overall, it’s a fantastic result and one that the students should be ecstatic with. The students represented Belridge in an outstanding fashion and I am extremely proud of the way the students played and behaved on the day. A massive well done to all students involved.

Bianca Webb (Year 12) was named Senior Squad 'Best on the Ground' for West Perth. She is currently sitting in the Top 5 for WAFLW Leading Goal Kickers! Biance has also been selected in the State 18s to represent WA. Her skills and determination are to be commended.
Year 10 Girls Soccer Lightning Carnival
On Thursday 9 May, Belridge Entered two teams in the girls soccer lightning carnival. The girls put in a stellar effort against four other schools. The highlight of the day being when two Belridge teams played each other! There was a lot of laughter and giggles and awesome defence. We were the only school with two teams and no substitues so they were on the run for a total of 3 hours. Great effort girls! And to quote the other schools "Belridge is the friendliest school" - you represented us so well.

Year 10 Lightning Carnival
On Thursday the 9th May, three Year 10 netball teams participated in the Lightning Carnival at Kingsway Sporting Complex. It was a great day with a win in Division 2 and a runner-up position in Division 1. The girls showcased their skills, as well as had a great time with their teammates on their last ever lightning carnival. Thank you to all the Year 11 and 12 helpers that scored and umpired, as well as the players that filled in for other schools and teams. Overall, it was a great day with great sportsmanship shown from all schools involved.
High School Cup
On Tuesday the 7th May, all ten netball specialised teams from Years 7 to 12 played in the Northern Netball High School Cup. All teams played very well on the day and showed great sportsmanship. Thank you to the girls who umpired and to the ex-students, Miss Hunt and parents that assisted with coaching. Congratulations to the six teams that have progressed into the next round.

Students from the Certificate II Business course were very busy over last term and the beginning of this term designing both the Year 12 Ball tickets, as well as the stationery requirements for the Chaplain’s Dinner. This forms part of their competency assessment for “Organize Daily Work Activities” as well as utilising word processing and graphical skills.
Students were required to research the information required for these documents from the staff members involved in the event. Year 12’s commenced work on their designs for the Year 12 Ball last year in preparation for the final products to be created in 2019. They were required to adhere to the strict timelines imposed by the event organiser and plan their work schedule accordingly so that the documents were prepared in time for the event. This year, Alexis Lardis designed and created the final ball ticket. The tickets were uploaded and sold using an online platform.
Students from both Year 11 and 12 were responsible for designing the Chaplain’s Dinner stationery, which comprised the invitation, the tickets and the menu. This year’s theme was ‘The Year of the Pig’ and an Asian style menu was created by the Hospitality Students. The invitation was sent to the school community, as well as external community members. The students worked in pairs and, therefore, had to demonstrate communication and negotiation skills to create their design. Well done to Atearia Henry and Tasmin McLennan (Year 11s) whose invitation was chosen by the Home Economics Staff. Atearia and Tasmin then created the tickets and the final menu, which were used for the event. The other students created matching tickets and menus based on their own individual designs. The class also prepared the tickets by photocopying, numbering and cutting them ready to be sold at the front office.

Toilet Doors Art Project
In early February, Belridge SC embarked on an art project, in conjunction with one of our feeder schools; Currambine Primary School. Over the course of four weeks, students designed and painted six of Currambine PS's toilet doors, in an endeavour to brighten the bathrooms. As can be seen from the photographs, the end results look amazing. Well done to all primary and secondary students involved in this project and thank you to Ms Veness, Associate Principal, in coordinating.

Year 11 Artwork
Students have recently been creating self-portrait drawings observed from mirrors and photographs, using a variety of media and bonal techniques to create the illusion of depth and relief. Keep up the great work!
Sculptures by the Sea
Year 10 and 11 Visual Arts students participated in viewing ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ at Cottesloe Beach recently. They had the opportunity to view and discuss first hand artworks displaying a variety of techniques - 3D, colour, texture, transparent / opaque / kinetic quality and size of the artworks, qualities which are often lost in reproductions often portrayed no larger than 10cm. There were 71 local, interstate and international artist’s works, including WA’s Ron Gomboc and Tim Macfarlane Reid. Similar exhibitions are run throughout the world and this is the fifteenth time it has been held in Cottesloe.

When the Rain Stops Falling
Our Year 11 and 12 Drama Class were lucky enough to attend the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and view the 3rd Year Acting Students perform a contemporary Australian text, “When the Rain Stops Falling”.
For some, this was their first theatre experience and for others they have said this was their favourite theatre experience! It was a valuable experience with many of our students wanting to attend WAAPA and continue their love and passion for the Performing Arts. Students were engaged and immersed within the performance with so many plot twists within the script and now can’t wait to study the text in Semester 2!

The Line
The Year 12 General Dance students attended the State Theatre of WA to view Co:3’s performance of “The Line”.
Co:3 is Western Australia’s premier contemporary dance company who seek to deliver meaningful contemporary Australian art.
“The Line” began with looking at boundaries; boundaries not only defined by a physical area in Perth called the Prohibited Area, but also boundaries created between community, people, races genders, ethnicities and religions. “The Line” is an opportunity to acknowledge and share the history that lives in the veins of so many of us that reside in this city.
The piece was very powerful, incorporating contemporary dance along with some traditional Aboriginal movements and ideas. It was a wonderful experience to have the opportunity to see a very unique performance.

On Wednesday the 1st of May, Year 11 General Geography students visited areas of Perth's northern beaches. The purpose of the field trip was that students could perform geographical fieldwork techniques such as field sketches, photographing, and note-taking. Students also gained a greater appreciation for the fragility of our coastline and how much our lifestyle has impacted upon it. Students were particularly taken aback at the Watermans area, the construction of sea walls and evidence of sandbagging displaying just how close the ocean is to everyday infrastructure. The day saw us visit the Scarborough redevelopment, Trigg Island, Watermans Conservation Area, Hillarys Boat Harbour, and Quinns Beach. Fantastic weather combined with a lunch stop at Hillarys meant a very enjoyable and educational day was had by all.

Science & Engineering Challenge
A select group of talented Year 10 Science students recently participated in the State Science and Engineering Challenge held at Claremont Showgrounds. Students worked in teams to solve various problems through creating and building solutions within restricted time, given limited resources. Volunteers from University of Newcastle, UWA, Murdoch University, Australian Defence Force, Australian Navy, Australian Army and Rotarians were all involved in mentoring and supporting students through the challenging situations. Students demonstrated creativity and ingenuity as they tackled perplexing tasks. Belridge SC ranked a very credible 5th amongst all schools participating on the day. Congratulations to all involved.

Student Council at GRIP Student Leadership Conference
At the end of March the Belridge Secondary College Student Councillors participated in the GRIP Students Leadership Conference at the Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre. The conference was a valuable experience for the Student Councillors and focussed on leadership skills and how to make a difference within your school community.
If students have any issue they would like to raise, the Students Council Suggestion Box is located in the library or, as always, students can speak to a Student Council representative.

Book Chat @ Library with Dymocks
During April, Dymocks Joondalup attended our Book Chat@ Library. Our once-a-term event is becoming more popular, with students already asking about the next one! Students heard about the latest new releases and with games and prizes, fun was had by all. Congratulations goes to Hunter Clarke on winning the book quiz this time round! Dymocks will be visiting us again for the next Book Chat in June.

Recycled Timber Wood Projects
Year 11 and 12 students are in the process of completing their Semester 1 wood general project. They completed a jewellery box project using all recycled timber (see examples). The box was made using the GIFKIN DOVETAIL JIG with either hinged or lift off lids. The boxes were made to a very high standard and the students were very proud of their finished product.
