It is with great pleasure that I can now announce, that I was the successful applicant of the advertised permanent Principal position at Belridge SC. After working at the College for 2½ years in a temporary capacity, I am extremely happy to commit my long-term future to the College. I know over the last few years there has been a lot of change in leadership at the College and I would like that to end now.
As Principal of this amazing school, my priority will always be the students - they come first. Ensuring your child has access to the best possible curriculum, pastoral care, and facilities will always be at the heart of my decisions. I am a strong believer that change takes time and effort and I am willing to provide both. I am fully committed to the students, staff and the wider Belridge community and cannot wait to embark on our future together.
I thank you for your support over the last 2½ years. It has been a difficult time to be in education, but with your support we have been able to function effectively and support our students with minimal impact, and for this I am very grateful.
Subject selection processes for 2023 have been completed for Years 11 and 12. This was undertaken using our new online course selection tool – SSO and went very smoothly. I thank Kasun Tennakoon and Lorraine Carr for their hard work in setting this up. New courses have been added this year to support our student pathways with General Human Biology and General Psychology being added to the timetable for 2023.
In support of our School Business Plan targets, to forward our commitment to Teaching and Learning and develop leadership and wellbeing at the College, we are proud to announce that we have 7 nominations for this year’s NEITA – National Excellence in Teaching Awards. Congratulations to Samantha Saunders, Narae Howard, Claire Green, Mikaela Shirley, Janita O’Shea, Stuart Rutter and Jarrad Timu on your nominations. Their contribution to the planning and implementation of our R-LEARNERS framework has been exemplary.
Our NAIDOC celebrations took place at the start of term with the official unveiling of our ‘Welcome to Country’ steps. These are located at the front of the school and are a very prominent visual for all to see. Elder Josh McGuire conducted a smoking ceremony to mark the event, an aboriginal dance group also performed for our students as part of the celebrations. Along with these annual celebrations Belridge SC has been working hard to integrate ATSI perspectives into our curricular programs to ensure coverage across the whole year. Our growing partnership with Follow the Dream has seen an increase in opportunity for our students, thanks to our ATSI team and Tina Deegan for their support.
On Friday 12th August we have a School Development Day. During this time staff will be focusing on the development of curriculum, aligned to R-LEARNERS teaching framework and SCSA requirements. Students do not attend school on this day.
There are also a range of whole school activities and special ‘weeks’ on the horizon this term. We have Science Week, Book Week, Wear-It-Purple Day, Athletics Carnival, Numeracy Week and R U OK day to name a few. We also have our Footy Colours fundraising day for Cancer and the Year 12 Ball to look forward to.
School Tours will be taking place on Wednesday 24th August for any parents considering enrolment for 2023 or beyond. Please contact the college if you would like to be added to this tour and don't forget to spread the word! Bookings are essential and can be made HERE.
There are a number of COVID protocols and processes still in place, with the Department of Health expecting another peak around Week 5 (15-19 August). Masks are recommended in indoor public places where social distancing is not possible. Please see the Healthy WA website for further information. Additional RAT tests have arrived at school for staff and students, these will be distributed through classes. If your child is absent during this time and misses out, please ask them to come to Admin reception to collect their allocation. All students will receive an additional 20 RAT tests.
I look forward to sharing the bumper term that is Term 3 with you, via our Facebook Page @BelridgeSC. If you have not already liked/followed our page, please do so, this will allow us to share our story with you as it happens.
Take care.

Deputy Principal - Middle School
Term 3 has started with lots of conversations and planning around subject selections for 2023. Students in Years 8 and 9 are currently choosing their elective subjects for 2023. This is exciting for students as it begins the career planning conversations and exploration of how to achieve the goals they set for next year and beyond. If you have any questions about this process, please contact the school.
Year 7 Lightning Carnival
Most of our Year 7 students attended the Lightning carnival against local schools in Week 2. Reports from staff who attended said that our students showed fantastic teamwork, tried hard at the respective sports and were great ambassadors for the school. Well done to all students and staff involved on a very successful day.
Semester 2 Timetables
All students have received their Semester 2 timetables. Year 7 and 8 students have been rotated through their electives and will be in new classes with different specialist teachers. Some Year 7 – 10 students have also had adjustments made to their MESH classes. Students should now be in classes that better suit their academic level. Teachers will provide ongoing feedback regarding student progress throughout the semester and can also be contacted if you have any concerns.
Enrolments 2023
Belridge SC is currently accepting Year 7 enrolments for 2023. Enrolment packages have now been distributed to all our partner primary schools. The Year 7 Coordinator for 2023, Alison Zarrop, and I are visiting all primary schools to speak to students. Enrolment packages are also available from reception. We require enrolment applications returned as soon as possible to allow sufficient planning time for 2023. Returned enrolment applications should also contain all necessary documentation. This includes a copy of the full birth certificate, two proofs of address (current rates notice or current lease agreement and a utilities bill or driver's licence), immunisation records and any applicable Family Court Orders. Should you have any concerns about the enrolment process, please contact reception on 9408 8000.
Parent Tours
We have another opportunity for parents to visit and look around Belridge Secondary College on the morning of Wednesday 24 August. It is an opportunity for prospective parents to have a tour of the school, complete enrolment forms and have any questions answered. More details can be found on the school website under News & Events or by contacting reception.
Student Services Incursions
During Week 1 all students attended either Man up or We Are Women incursions. The incursions raised important, age-appropriate topics with students such as the use of social media, friendships and relationships. The sessions received excellent feedback from students; we hope important lessons were learnt. We are looking forward to further incursions to support student wellbeing this term.
Louise Hall
Deputy Principal - Years 7, 8 and 9
Vice Principal - Senior School
We have had a great start to Term 3. All students received their Semester 2 timetables with Year 7 and 8 students doing a rotation of electives. Year 12s are excited about their final full semester (term) of schooling.
Year 12 Students
All Year 12 ATAR students received their predicted ATAR score during Week 3 of this term. This prediction is based on Semester 1 results. Students also received ATAR target settings to concentrate on achievable goals within each subject.
Students should be striving for the best results possible in order to be competitive for university or training entry. It is important that after nearly 12 years of schooling, students strive to do their best when the end goal is in sight. All students, but especially those who have to sit external WACE ATAR exams, should have a study plan and use the ‘Smart Study’ tips given to them by their teachers. The Semester 2 (Mock) ATAR examination schedule can be found below. Students should be setting a study plan in preparation for these examinations. These will be held on the last Friday of term 3 (English) and the second week of the September / October school holidays.
Free Year 12 ATAR Revision Classes
AT BELRIDGE SECONDARY COLLEGE: I am in the process of organising external tutors to run afterschool ATAR revision classes for most of the ATAR courses during Week 6 to 10 in Term 3 at Belridge Secondary College. These revision classes will be very important to boost student results and they will be free of charge to our Year 12 students. In addition to that, some of our BSC staff will be running afterschool classes to support our Year 12s.
AT EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY: ECU also runs free study sessions at the Joondalup Campus during the first week of the September/October school holidays. At the end of each four-hour session, the students will be given a set of comprehensive revision notes for free. This would be great preparation for Year 12s exams. Students need to sign up on-line. Please refer to the flyer in this newsletter under the Connected Community section.
If you wish to attend university in 2023, apply using TISCOnline at www.tisc.edu.au
Year 11 Students
Year 11 students should now be aware of what is required to succeed in Senior School. The key element is regular attendance. Any student who has a less than 90% attendance is at serious risk of falling behind in their studies. Also, any Year 11 student that falls behind in their assessment work is required to remain at school each Wednesday, during period 5, to complete their work. Students should not make other arrangements, such as part-time work, during this period. If we require students for meetings or to complete work as above, they are expected to be available.
ALL SENIOR STUDENTS
School Planners
All students should be using their planners to record their homework and plan to complete all assessment items. Often teachers write key messages for parents in the planners, so it would be appreciated if parents could check these planners as often as possible.
Year 10, 11 and 12 Students
The second round of the OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) commences on Monday 29 August. It is important that students attend their tests and do their best - the tests are important for students to progress through Years 11 and 12. OLNA must be achieved to get a WACE.
Road Safety
It is a timely reminder to all to be careful on the roads. It is highly recommended that students cross Ocean Reef Road with the assistance of the crossing attendants. The speed limit on this road is 70kmh, and heading west past the school there is a blind corner. Also, students riding bikes should be wearing helmets and need to look both ways when exiting the shopping centre car parks. We ask all parents to take great care when driving near the school during starting and closing times and when picking up and dropping off students.
Here’s wishing all students a safe and successful Terms 3 and 4.

We Are Womxn and Man Up Programs
Students in Year 7-11 kicked off Term 3 with the We Are Womxn and Man Up programs.
These programs had a focus on positive and respectful relationships (friendships, intimate and family), mental health, body esteem and safe social media use. The presenters created a space to discuss those taboo topics to help our young people find their power to de-stigmatise discussions about women’s issues and to allow young men to embrace healthy masculinity. The presentations were well received by all students and were a fantastic way to start Term 3.
Clearing the Air – Vaping Education
Years 7-10 students have engaged in “Clearing the Air” presented by Perennial Health Institute. The presentation addressed the current trend of vaping and brought students up to speed on the latest knowledge surrounding e-cigarettes and vaping.
The presentation included some fact vs. fiction, standing up against peer pressure, health issues, social triggers and what students can do about the current vape problem.
Azelene Williams who presented to the students draws from her own experiences as a teenager who smoked and later turned to vaping and the affects this had on her health.
As a school we endeavour to keep our students informed about up to date health information.
Dates for your Diary
Wear it Purple Day: 26 August – Go Purple and stand against the alarming rate of discrimination LGBTIQIA+ youth still face. Today is the day to get your purple on and to raise awareness in our school community.
R U OK? Day: 8 September – A day to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with those in their world who may be struggling with life. Wear your brightest yellow on this day to help promote awareness or to help start that conversation.

Humanities Learning Area
Year 7 students recently had the opportunity to speak to a practicing Barrister and ex-judge, Mr Simon Freitag SC, in their HASS class, to support the Civics curriculum. Mr Freitag shared a range of cases he has defended and prosecuted, and also bought his Senior Counsel and Judge robes for students to try on. Koby Notman is shown in the Senior Counsel attire, and Karis Udy wore the District Court Judge's robes. Students particularly enjoyed hearing about the role of forensic science in the resolution of the cases he shared. The presentation was very engaging for students, as they wanted to keep asking questions long after the class finished!

Year 11 and 12 Building & Construction
As part of the Building and Construction course students have to complete a short course in paving. To ensure the students experience a real life experience they pave small areas around the school.
During the project the students clean the plot, measure to work out the quantity of bricks required, use the brick saw and the compactor to compact and level the ground. Students completed three areas that needed paving across the school to a very professional standard - a job well done!

White Card Training
On Thursday 4th August, Craig MacKellar from Paragon Corporate Training, delivered the White Card Training course to seven of our Year 12 students from Belridge Secondary College and six students from the Belridge Education Support Centre.
The White Card Training course is a nationally recognised Occupational Health and Safety Construction Induction and anyone working on a building, construction or mine site must have a White Card.
Earlier this year, another larger group of Year 11 and 12 students from BSC also completed the White Card Training course. All these students who completed the course have shown great initiative to acquire a White Card in order to prepare themselves for any opportunity that may arise to work in a variety of jobs on building and construction sites.

Year 10 AEP Excursion
Science & Engineering Challenge
On Wednesday 22 June, the Year 10 AE class participated in the Science and Engineering Challenge, held at the Claremont Showgrounds. The day involved working in small groups and trying to solve problems to score as many points as possible. Activities included bridge building, building a buggy to navigate uneven terrain on mars and planning efficient transport networks. Most groups had the opportunity to participate in two activities, while one group worked on the bridge building for the day. Up against seven other schools, the bridges were then tested at the end of the day.
Students had a fantastic day and continued to develop their STEM skills throughout these activities.

Year 9 Career Taster Program
‘Pick Your Pathway’ Excursion
I was fortunate to accompany 17 energetic Year 9 students on a 'Career Taster' excursion to North Metro TAFE and Edith Cowan University (ECU) Joondalup towards the end of Term 2. The purpose of the day was to expose students to career pathway options available via TAFE and university by involvement in 'hands on' activities. Students spent the morning at TAFE involved in two workshops of their choice, including Cyber Security, Horticulture, Sport, Fitness and Digital Media before trekking to ECU. The highlight of the morning for me was having Year 12 Belridge SC student, Oscar Le Blanc, greet me as he was assisting with one of the fitness workshops, as a part of his one day a week Fitness Certificate III course. Having Oscar put Year 9 students through fitness activities highlighted to students that they could combine their secondary studies with a certificate qualification if they wished. Oscar and his Year 12 peers from other schools did a great job as well!
Students were involved in a further two workshops at ECU in the afternoon, based on the same genre of careers and industries they were exposed to at TAFE. Involvement in the workshop highlighted to students the many different pathways available to students for them to pursue a particular career. The conduct of all attendees was exemplary – TAFE and ECU staff commented on this on a number of occasions. Many of our students verbally stated they had enjoyed the day and gained a lot out of it. ECU and TAFE staff commented that the day was a big success.
This event was only one of a range of ‘career tasters’ being made available to Year 9 students during the year. There will a number of opportunities for Year 9 students to be involved in career taster events throughout Semester 2.

Year 6 | Marble Maze |
An amazing 28 classes across 7 of our partner primary schools have risen to the challenge. Two winning teams per year group will then be invited to Belridge SC during Week 5 to battle it out for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place - Good luck to all entrants!

NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It's held each year during the first week of July and is an important annual event where everyone's invited to join in the celebrations. As NAIDOC week fell during the school holidays, Belridge SC students and staff celebrated and participated in activities throughout Week 10 Term 2 and Week 1 Term 3!
Students participated in classroom activities and tasks with a focus around the 2022 theme of Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! learning about influential Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culturally significant events. Students also made NAIDOC bracelets, participated in the NAIDOC poster colouring-in competition, enjoyed live DJ sets during break times featuring all music by Indigenous artists, and enjoyed a fantastic dance and music performance by the Wadumbah Dance group.
Our students also worked together to complete the first set of a series of projects called the Next Step: Language project. The students prepared and painted the entrance steps at the front of the College with our Acknowledgement of Country in both Noongar and English language, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to reconciliation and the celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The project was officially opened with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country by our local elder Vaughn Joshua McGuire, who spoke about the importance of ongoing reconciliation and the vital role education plays in shaping our future generations.

Champion Schools Volleyball Tournament
On Wednesday 22nd June, Belridge Secondary College took 5 Senior Volleyball teams to Bendat Stadium to compete in the Champion Schools Volleyball Tournament. This venue was amazing and all students represented the college wonderfully.
We had 3 boy and 2 girl teams, who were all very eager to take the court. Belridge have never played in the A division before this year and we finished with a great result in this division. Building blocks for the future!
Each team played at least 4 games, with some playing 5 or 6. The two girl teams were in A and B division and both finished in 3rd place. A fantastic achievement for the two teams, given they hadn’t trained together as a team at all!
The boys teams were extremely competitive finishing runners up in all three A, B and C divisions. In A division, the boys played against Greenwood 1 and unfortunately went down to them in the grand final. We did not make it easy for them by any means! Some quality volleyball was played by both teams with some huge points won over the final.
In B division the boys played against Greenwood 2. We were up by a set when the time ran out, but unfortunately the game went to extra time where they got on top of us. There was no final for C division. The placings were allocated based on where the teams finished after the games over the day, giving us another second place!
With Greenwood being a specialist Volleyball school, we expect them to dominate each year. It was amazing to see our teams however right up there being very competitive against their top teams, especially in A division - Belridge rose to the challenge beautifully.
Congratulations to all teams who represented Belridge throughout the day. It was a pleasure to watch your skill, strategy, and teamwork on and off the court.

Elite Netball Academy Reports
Term 2 has been extremely busy for the Netball Academy. We have had our Fast 5 House Tournament, High School Cup Zones and then High School Cup Elimination Carnival as well as the Year 8 and 9 Lightning Carnivals.
Fast 5 House Carnival
On Monday of Week 9 (June 20th) we held the annual Netball Academy’s Fast 5 House Cup competition. This is between Manta Rays, Marlins and Sharks and involves all students from Years 7-12 in the Belridge Netball Academy. Teams consist of students from all year groups combining on the day to play the Fast 5 style of Netball, where 1, 2 and 3 points are awarded for goals depending on where the shooters are standing to shoot from. There are only 5 players on the court from each team and so there are no wings. The games ran for 6 minutes per quarter with teams choosing a quarter as their power play where points are doubled. There are rolling subs so all students can come on quickly and no one should get too tired. When teams were off they were required to umpire and score.
There were only two Manta Rays teams in the whole academy and they did very well over the day to represent the blue colour. The other houses have 4/5 teams in each spreading the players from the year groups out. A big thank you to the Year 11/12 Certificate course girls who were responsible for fixtures and the team organisation for the day. This is built into their course and a requirement for them to complete it.
Most games were very even with only a few goals difference in each. There were quite a few 2 and 3 pointers scored over the day, which were a highlight!
In the end we had a grand final between Sharks 3 and Marlins 4, with Sharks winning only in the 4th quarter. A very exciting game to watch with multiple changes in the lead over the duration of the game.
Congratulations to all team members of Sharks 3 as well as our MVP’s for each house:
Sharks | Olivia Williams | Year 9 |
Marlins | Miley Hynes | Year 7 |
Manta Rays | Elli Van den Broeke | Year 11 |
We finished off a fantastic day with some delicious food in the school café followed by presentations to the winning team and MVP’s for the day.
The weather cleared up beautifully over the day to make a fantastic competition between the three houses. It was great to see all year groups interacting in their teams on and off the court to represent the Netball Academy. The senior girls especially, took on a leadership role in their teams where they helped the younger girls with their netball skills and confidence. I look forward to a bigger and better comp next year.

High School Cup - Zones
This year we decided to go to both the South and North Zone carnivals, to make it work for all year groups around assessments and exam periods. We took the two Senior teams (11/12’s) to the South Carnival in Fremantle, where the top team progressed through to the Elimination Carnival after being undefeated over this day. They played 4/5 games over the day to come away undefeated. The second team had a tough run and didn’t make it through to elimination after a couple of losses at the zones.
The Year 7-10 students in the academy went to the North carnival at Perth Netball Association on Thursday 26th May. We had 7 teams across these year groups and 5 teams progressed through to the elimination carnival based on their results from the day.
The Year 7 top team had a couple of wins and a couple of losses in their first carnival for the year. The second 7 team had a tough run and didn’t have a win but were competitive and had a blast. The top Year 8 team was undefeated and progressed through to the next round and the second Year 8 team had a couple of wins and a couple of losses over the day.
Both Year 9 teams went through the day undefeated and therefore both progressed straight through to the elimination final finishing top in their zones. The Year 10 team also had a great run and went through undefeated over the day, also progressing to the elimination carnival. These are wonderful results for the Academy as they play between 4 and 6 games over the day, so to go through without losing is a great achievement.
High School Cup - Elimination
After our great results from the zones carnival, our Netball Academy took 7 teams to the Elimination Carnival in Fremantle on June 23rd. The day was wet, windy and cold and we still persevered and performed, despite what the weather served up. We took a Year 8 team, two Year 9 teams, a year 10 team, the senior girls top team and two senior boys teams.
The Year 8 team went through undefeated and are now on their way to the state finals. A huge result for them. The Year 9 team 1 had 2 losses, a draw against Warwick and a narrow loss to Melville which pushed them to second place in their zone where they didn’t progress further. They had a tough run. The second Year 9 team didn’t win any, but had a draw and a few very narrow losses. The Year 10 team had one loss and unfortunately this cost them their position in the qualifying final.
The senior girls team had 3 wins and 2 losses over the day and due to time restraints, only the winners in each zone went through to the final. The two senior boys teams played extremely well over the day, despite the top team having their goal shooter sustain a serious injury. The second team had a few wins and a few losses but didn’t progress to the qualifying final. The Year 12 team however did make it to the cross over final where they narrowly lost in a tough game.
With tough conditions throughout the day all students (umpires and helpers) performed extremely well and represented the Netball Academy with a great attitude and determination.
Congratulations and all the best to the Year 8 team, who now have a chance to win the state title.

High School Cup - State Finals
BSC Netball Academy recently competed in the High School Cup, a statewide competition for all WA High schools.
As reported in full above, the first carnival is played in a zone format in the age divisions of Lower Year 7/8, Middle Year 9/10 and Open Year 11/12. In order to progress to the Eliminations day carnival, they must win all games in their zone.
The Year 8 team seamlessly progressed to the Eliminations day carnival in Fremantle. Wet and wintery conditions were no issue. Through great teamwork and discipline winning all of their pool games by hefty margins and then finished the cross over final winning 18- 1 against Hammond Park in a dominant display.
This win had them sitting in the Top 4 in the State, booking a ticket to the state finals at the Gold Netball Centre.
BSC entered the semi-final ready to fight for a spot in the grand finale. Coming up against Emmanuel College, a very tall and quick team, the girls were more than ready for the challenge. Once again, strong defense and great attack gave Emmanuel College a good run for their money in the first half. Emmanuel however maintained the intensity to pull ahead in the second half to take the win despite the gritty performance from BSC.
Up next was Willetton Senior High. Bringing their hard working, no nonsense style to the court, the girls started strong in the first quarter, easily accounting for Willetton's height, moving the ball down the court and into attack, setting up an early 5-0 break. The great start served to be the catalyst for the rest of the game. Despite a great tussle in the third quarter, BSC showed great poise and professionalism to weather the storm and come away victorious 28-24.
This win means we have taken out 3rd place in the State!
Congratulations to the following students:

Being off season it has been a bit quiet on the cricket front, but with the season fast approaching we certainly have a lot of things upcoming starting with our Year 7 Cricket Camp in Week 4 of Term 3 to look forward to. Recently though, some Belridge cricket students represented WA in the National Indoor Cricket Championships in Melbourne. All of the WA teams from Under 18’s, 16’s and 14’s made the finals and performed very well, which led to 3 students making Australian representative sides after the tournament. Big congratulations to all involved, names as follows:
Ethan Benson | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U18 |
Nicholas Hendry | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U18 |
Lewis Benton | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U18 |
Jayden Rotham | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U16 |
Coen Davies | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U16 |
Eliza O'Connor | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U14 |
Aryan Patel | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U14 |
Shaan Darji | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U14 |
Delilah Haggas | Western Australia Indoor Cricket U14 |
Out of these students Ethan Benson, Coen Davies and Shaan Darji made their respective age groups All-Stars teams - which was an amazing achievement!
Unfortunately, only the girls were able to win their age groups Grand Final with Eliza O’Connor and Delilah Haggas showing off the winners shield (pictured).
In more news, another notable mention to last year’s graduating Belridge cricket student Cooper Connolly who is being sent to the sub-continent next month with a select few cricketers in Australia to be involved in a specific training Academy for the next batch of future Australian cricket hopefuls. Good Luck Cooper - we are watching you closely!
