Academic Life & Learning

Humanities Learning Area

Year 7 students recently had the opportunity to speak to a practicing Barrister and ex-judge, Mr Simon Freitag SC, in their HASS class, to support the Civics curriculum. Mr Freitag shared a range of cases he has defended and prosecuted, and also bought his Senior Counsel and Judge robes for students to try on. Koby Notman is shown in the Senior Counsel attire, and Karis Udy wore the District Court Judge's robes. Students particularly enjoyed hearing about the role of forensic science in the resolution of the cases he shared. The presentation was very engaging for students, as they wanted to keep asking questions long after the class finished!

Innovate & Grow

This term in Year 10 Business and Money Minds, we have started working on our entrepreneurial skills for our market stall under the $20 Boss Program that will take place in Term 4.
In groups, we were given; 20 pieces of dry spaghetti, blu tac, a marshmallow, sticky tape and 3 x elastic bands and were tasked with building a tower with a lookout for an environmental reserve. The teams were given 20 minutes and only the resources given to produce the tallest, but stable, tower. Watching the teams work together and at times improvise truly showed that each entrepreneur has different skills, even if that means taking a back seat. Well done to Tristan Forbes, Charlie Williams and Tyrone Mills with a (just) stable tower of 45cm.

During NAIDOC week students analysed and used the lyrics from famous Australian protest songs to create their very own 'Get up, Stand up, Show up' posters.  This activity saw students use powerful figurative, rhetoric and emotive language to create multimodal texts that displayed powerful messages whilst targeting a particular audience.  Students are to be commended for their efforts and passion on an important issue.

Students in their Year 7 AEP English class recently participated in two national writing competitions. The first was the 2022 West Australian Yarn Competition and the second was the 2022 RD Walshe Memorial Writing for the Environment Competition.  Whilst we are still waiting on the results from these competitions, I would like to congratulate the classroom prize winners whose stories were both original and imaginative.  Students' stories were collated and put into an anthology for all to read.  Our AEP students should be commended for their efforts.

Year 10 Dinner Dance 2022

Last term Year 10 Students were treated to a dinner/dance.  As students arrived they were greeted on the boardwalk of Hillarys Yacht Club, to enjoy a mocktail before entering the venue decorated in red, gold and black. Students enjoyed their buffet and the photobooth and very quickly the whole room was on the dance floor! It was fantastic to see the students all dressed up and enjoying themselves, most importantly including others and making new friendships! The following students came away with awards:

Year 11 and 12 Building & Construction

As part of the Building and Construction course students have to complete a short course in paving. To ensure the students experience a real life experience they pave small areas around the school.

During the project the students clean the plot, measure to work out the quantity of bricks required, use the brick saw and the compactor to compact and level the ground. Students completed three areas that needed paving across the school to a very professional standard - a job well done!

White Card Training

On Thursday 4th August, Craig MacKellar from Paragon Corporate Training, delivered the White Card Training course to seven of our Year 12 students from Belridge Secondary College and six students from the Belridge Education Support Centre.

The White Card Training course is a nationally recognised Occupational Health and Safety Construction Induction and anyone working on a building, construction or mine site must have a White Card.

Earlier this year, another larger group of Year 11 and 12 students from BSC also completed the White Card Training course. All these students who completed the course have shown great initiative to acquire a White Card in order to prepare themselves for any opportunity that may arise to work in a variety of jobs on building and construction sites.

Year 10 AEP Excursion
Science & Engineering Challenge

On Wednesday 22 June, the Year 10 AE class participated in the Science and Engineering Challenge, held at the Claremont Showgrounds. The day involved working in small groups and trying to solve problems to score as many points as possible. Activities included bridge building, building a buggy to navigate uneven terrain on mars and planning efficient transport networks. Most groups had the opportunity to participate in two activities, while one group worked on the bridge building for the day. Up against seven other schools, the bridges were then tested at the end of the day.

Students had a fantastic day and continued to develop their STEM skills throughout these activities.

Year 9 Career Taster Program
‘Pick Your Pathway’ Excursion

I was fortunate to accompany 17 energetic Year 9 students on a 'Career Taster' excursion to North Metro TAFE and Edith Cowan University (ECU) Joondalup towards the end of Term 2. The purpose of the day was to expose students to career pathway options available via TAFE and university by involvement in 'hands on' activities. Students spent the morning at TAFE involved in two workshops of their choice, including Cyber Security, Horticulture, Sport, Fitness and Digital Media before trekking to ECU. The highlight of the morning for me was having Year 12 Belridge SC student, Oscar Le Blanc, greet me as he was assisting with one of the fitness workshops, as a part of his one day a week Fitness Certificate III course. Having Oscar put Year 9 students through fitness activities highlighted to students that they could combine their secondary studies with a certificate qualification if they wished. Oscar and his Year 12 peers from other schools did a great job as well!

Students were involved in a further two workshops at ECU in the afternoon, based on the same genre of careers and industries they were exposed to at TAFE. Involvement in the workshop highlighted to students the many different pathways available to students for them to pursue a particular career. The conduct of all attendees was exemplary – TAFE and ECU staff commented on this on a number of occasions. Many of our students verbally stated they had enjoyed the day and gained a lot out of it. ECU and TAFE staff commented that the day was a big success.

This event was only one of a range of ‘career tasters’ being made available to Year 9 students during the year. There will a number of opportunities for Year 9 students to be involved in career taster events throughout Semester 2.
