and His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson, the Governor of WA
Dear Belridge Community,
As Term 3 unfolds, we’ve already seen a flurry of activity and accomplishments that I’m proud to share with you.
On Wednesday, 25 June 2025, we were honoured to welcome the Governor of Western Australia to our school. His visit focused on road safety and the critical importance of making responsible decisions when driving. Our students engaged thoughtfully in discussions, showing great maturity and awareness.
The College continues to be proud of our students’ achievements across a range of disciplines inside and out of school life. This Term, I would like to congratulate students selected for the Cricket 12s WA State Team - Zac Page and Kingston Moor (Year 7), our talented highland dancer – Alice Wardlaw (Year 7) and our Shaun Tan Award participants Chelsea Ribeiro (Year 10) and Abedah Swidan (Year 8). Also Kyla Passmore (Year 9) on having her artwork selected for exhibition in the Joondalup Art Awards.
We also had artworks selected from Year 10 students Ruby Byrne, Salma Swidan and Chelsea Ribeiro that were on display at the prestigious annual St George’s Art Exhibition. This is a wonderful recognition of student creativity and skill at the highest level.
Our Year 7 and 8 students had a fantastic time at the Lightning Carnivals, showcasing teamwork, sportsmanship, and school spirit, and despite the chilly and wild weather, our OED students braved the cold and embraced the adventure working towards their ODE assessments on Camp.
At the start of this term, we undertook our parent information afternoon. For the first time, we moved to an afternoon/evening session to accommodate more families and provide greater flexibility. Thank you to all families who participated in our extended Parent/Teacher Interview day. We’re reviewing feedback and considering whether this longer format should become a regular feature – your thoughts are welcome.
At the start of this Term, we held our final School Development Day of the year. This was a really useful day for all staff to engage in some quality planning for the remainder of the year as well as focus on some planning towards our whole school priorities. With some significant changes to many learning area curriculums, this time was greatly appreciated.
National School Opinion Survey results are in, and we’re grateful for the feedback from our community. On our Parent Survey, 17/20 statements exceeded our school target of 3.6/5, with the remaining 3 scoring 3.5/5. The valuable feedback from students, staff, and parents continues to guide our growth and improvement as a school community.
Our Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) Girls’ Team are revving for an exciting international journey to Germany this week. Their innovation and teamwork have earned them this incredible opportunity – we wish them all the best and look forward to sharing their journey with you in the next newsletter.
Mark your calendars for these exciting upcoming events this term:
- Dance Showcase – Thursday, 28 August 2025 6:00pm
- Athletics Carnival – Friday, 5 September 2025 - All Day
- Music Showcase – Wednesday, 10 September 2025 6:00pm

Enrolments are steadily rolling in for next year. If you haven’t yet submitted your application, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible to secure your place to ensure we have the best possible timetable, support and staff in place for your child.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement with the College.
Warm regards,
Mrs Sharon Lyon

Deputy Principal - Years 7, 8 and 9
Term 3 is rolling on, students have been settling into their studies and participating in a range of in-school activities and excursions. I was fortunate to attend the ‘Adopt a Beach’ excursion to Sorrento beach with Mrs Green, Mr Gibbs and Year 8 Science_1.
Students joined City of Joondalup staff and volunteers from the local environmental ‘coast care’ group. Adopt a Beach helps students gain a deeper understanding of the vital role coastal and marine ecosystems play, along with the sustainability challenges they face - such as ocean plastic pollution, beach erosion, population pressures and climate change. Students made a meaningful impact on our local beaches by actively participating in conservation work, including planting native seedlings, removing invasive species and beach clean-ups. Everyone pitched in to record an impressive total of over 600 seedlings being planted on the foredunes just north of the Sorrento Surf Club.
The CTP (Career Taster Program), under Mr Mouritz’s leadership, continues to provide a wide variety of excursions for students in Year 9, designed to give students an experience in a range of industries and TAFE courses preparing students for these careers. Year 9 students also attended the Perth Skills West Careers and Employment Expo, held at the at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Students enjoyed the opportunity to gain employment and training related material from over 160 employment and training representatives, which will assist with their individual career pathway planning, along with the chance to directly speak and network with training and employment providers.
On the sporting field, the Year 7 Lightning Carnival was held on Thursday, 31 July 2025, with Belridge Secondary College fielding teams in basketball, volleyball, netball, soccer and AFL football. The carnival took place on a fine and sunny day, and by all accounts students behaved impeccably and participated in all sports with enthusiasm and skill.
We timetable so that Years 7 and 8 students cycle through a range of Semester long ‘electives’ so that they gain exposure to the range of learning activities in the Arts and Technology Learning Areas, providing an experience base for making course selections in Years 9 and 10. Year 8 and 9 students recently completed the selection of their 2026 electives, which run for the whole academic year, providing a learning base for further studies in subjects of interest during senior school years.
The Arts Department puts on three big performances this month – ‘Illuminate’, the College’s Dance Showcase, will take place on Thursday, 28 August 2025from 6:00pm. This promises to be a fantastic evening, as the girls have been training hard with their teacher and choreographer, Jessica Pesti and will be performing some amazing dance routines. Tickets are selling fast, grab yours via online link on website.
Music (guitar) students recently performed at the Classical Guitar Ensemble Festival at Carine Senior High School with their instrumental teacher, Kylie Walpole and were awarded an outstanding ranking by the adjudicators, the highest ranking they can bestow.
Parents and friends will be able to hear them, and other talented music students on Wednesday 10 September 2025, at 6:00pm at the College’s annual Music Concert, to be held in the Auditorium. Visual Arts students’ artwork will also be on display during Weeks 7 and 8. And finally, our drama students are rehearsing hard for their annual Production ‘Mean Girls’ on Tuesday, 16 September 2025.

Hey everyone! I’m Jake and I’m the Youth Worker at Belridge Secondary College. What makes this role extra special to me is that I used to walk these very same halls as a student - not always on my best behaviour, but always full of potential (even if I didn’t know it at the time).
Back then, a Chaplain/Youth Worker at this school took the time to believe in me. He helped me see that I was capable of more than I gave myself credit for that if I set my mind to something, I could achieve it. That support changed my life; it’s a part of the reason I have two degrees (something I never imagined possible) and it is exactly why I am here today.
My goal is simple: to be that same encouraging presence and warmth for today’s students. Whether you’re flying high or figuring things out, I want you to know you’re not alone and that your future is full of possibility.
I engage with students both one-on-one at school clubs and in larger group-based settings. If you have concerns about your child or feel they may benefit from a chat, I accept self-referrals from parents, students and teachers.
As a Youth Worker contracted through Anglicare WA, I am provided with a wealth of resources and support from Anglicare for both students and their families. I can provide support in information for referrals to services, with services ranging from counselling, parenting support, emergency relief and family and domestic violence support.
My big picture is to engage the school as a whole, bring different people together and host a variety of events and activities that help build relationships between students and teachers. Term 2 saw a Junior League of Mario Kart being held every Tuesday and Thursday. We are now planning to incorporate a Senior and Teacher league this term.
Whether flying high or figuring things out, I want the young people at Belridge Secondary College to know they aren't alone and that their future is full of possibility.

Year 9 AEP Students Engineer the Future at ECU
On Tuesday, 19 August 2025, our 9SCI1 AEP students had the opportunity to experience two hands-on workshops during their second session of the ECU CREATE program at Edith Cowan University.
Hosted by ECU's School of Engineering, this experience is designed to give young secondary students a practical introduction to engineering and technology. The program aims to inspire and inform students as they begin to consider their upper-school subject choices in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) fields.
Our students eagerly participated in both workshops. First, they put their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test in a competitive bridge-building competition, learning firsthand about structural design and teamwork. Following that, they explored cutting-edge science in a workshop on water membranes, discovering how innovative technology is used to tackle real-world challenges like water purification.
It was an exciting day, providing students with a valuable glimpse into the diverse world of engineering.

2025 PBF Presentation and Governor's Visit
As part of the Keys for Life Driver Education program run during Terms 1 and 2 for our Year 10's, Belridge Secondary College hosted a visit from a guest speaker from PBF (Paraplegic Benefit Fund) as well as a very special guest, His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson, the Governor of Western Australia. The presentation is aimed at increasing students' awareness of their responsibilities, and the consequences of their decisions while learning to drive.
Our Year 10’s were fortunate enough to have the Governor address the cohort directly and share his long and distinguished experience as a WA Police Officer. He recounted some harrowing yet impactful experiences from his career, highlighting the importance of students making responsible decisions on the road not just for themselves, but also for their peers and the wider community. The Governor then introduced Mik Francis, PBF's guest speaker, to share his story with the group.
Mik spoke about the road accident that caused his life-altering injury, leaving him partially paralysed and wheelchair-bound, and the decisions he and others made leading up to the crash. It was an insightful and emotional story that would have left a lasting impression on our students. While learning about these kinds of consequences in class, it's invaluable for students to hear firsthand accounts from those who have lived these experiences.
Special thanks to the Student Councillors who welcomed the Governor to the College. The behaviour and respect shown by our students was exemplary. All sat silently during the presentation, and some asked very mature and insightful questions. All students are to be commended for the way in which they represented themselves and the College.

AEP - Adopt a Beach
On Tuesday, 1 July 2025, twenty Year 8 Science AEP students travelled to Sorrento Beach, braving the weather to participate in sand dune regeneration.
Students made a meaningful impact at Sorrento, planting 600 native seedlings in an hour and a half. This valuable conservation work will help to hold sand at Sorrento beach, reducing beach erosion (a soft engineering technique). Students have been encouraged to revisit the site in future to see the development of the seedlings and dunes.
This fieldwork links to this year's AEP Showcase theme Restoring the Environment, where students will present on ways to restore landforms and landscapes, restoring liveability. The 2025 AEP Showcase will be held on Monday, 3 November 2025 – details to follow.

ATSI
NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It's held each year during the first full week of July and is an important annual event where everyone is invited to join in the celebrations. As NAIDOC Week fell during the school holidays, Belridge Secondary College students and staff celebrated and participated in activities throughout Week 10 of Term 2.
Students participated in classroom activities and tasks with a focus around the 2025 theme of Strength, Vision & Legacy, learning about influential Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and how we can all build a stronger Australia. Students also made NAIDOC bracelets and participated in the NAIDOC poster colouring-in competition during Form classes.
Monday break time provided an opportunity for students to sample traditional Australian meats and spices, including Kangaroo, Crocodile, Emu, and beef flavoured with native peppers. On Wednesday we all enjoyed live DJ sets during break times featuring music by Indigenous artists and were awed by a fantastic story-telling performance of the Honey Bee by a number our Follow the Dream students and tutors.

Our Follow the Dream lower school students created a sand mural, taking inspiration from the NAIDOC 2025 poster and carrying on the theme ‘Bridging Now to Next’ from National Reconciliation Week earlier in the Term.
The sand mural is a boab tree with three limbs representing the current leaders (strength), the youth (vision), and past generations (legacy). The sun above is shining the way forward, surrounded by good spirits keeping their culture strong.

Cooking Up a Storm - Year 9 Career Taster
On Monday, 11 August 2025 a small group of Year 9 students had the opportunity to visit Joondalup’s North Metropolitan TAFE campus to participate in the ‘Cooking Up a Storm’ commercial cookery event. Students chose to be involved in the excursion so that they could gain an idea of what working in a commercial kitchen at TAFE is like. The excursion was part of the Year 9 Career Taster Program, which has been designed to provide students with exposure to industry and workplaces of interest. Attendance was based on an expression of interest basis, with numerous students unfortunately missing out on the event, due to high interest in the commercial cooking field.
Once the day’s itinerary was explained, students were escorted to one of the site’s commercial kitchens and introduced to their lecturer, Chef Claire, who instructs Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, which is the qualification apprentices complete to become professional chefs. Students were attired in clothing suitable for the kitchen environment, including long pants, enclosed shoes and long hair tied back. They were also provided with a hair cover and plastic apron. Students were informed that they would be preparing a sticky date pudding from scratch, topped with a glazed fig and butterscotch sauce. Students were excited to prepare the meal but were mainly motivated by the realisation that they would be able to eat the yummy dessert at the end of the day!
During the day, students were taught about the importance of kitchen hygiene and instructed in the proper use of a range of kitchen utensils and machinery, including the commercial mixers and ovens, which required significant instruction to operate. They also had the opportunity to purchase food from the nearby café, which is stocked by meals prepared in the commercial kitchens at TAFE. Students worked in pairs to prepare their meals, with their communication and collaboration skills put on great display. At the end of the event students did a great job cleaning their workspaces and they were rewarded with tasting their amazing creation, topped with a range of chocolate coated decorations. They also had plenty of leftovers for their friends and family to enjoy once they got home.

- Students having a go at the drilling and shot firing mining simulators, and;
- Students taking away a range of freebies from employers such as the Gold Industry Group, BHP and Rio Tinto.
At the end of the event students were reminded of the importance of making informed career related decisions and to continue to seek out resources they can use to develop a suitable and meaningful individual career pathway on completion of their secondary studies. Unsurprisingly many attendees have plans to pursue employment in the resources sector.

Skills West Career and Employment Expo
24 and 25 July (Week 1)
A group of 50 Year 9 students and 30 Year 11 and 12 Career and Enterprise students recently attended the annual Skills West Career and Employment Expo, held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event is WA’s biggest career and employment based- event, with over 160 exhibitors providing training and employment information. The excursion was organised and supported by the College’s Career Practitioner - Ashley Mouritz, Program Coordinator Senior School Pathways - Adam Smith and Education Assistant - Nicole Miller. The event allowed students to directly network with a wide range of training and employment providers. Attendees also had the opportunity to:
- Gain free career advice.
- Enjoy the career seminars.
- Learn how to write a winning resume.
- Talk with key organisations at the Construction Training Fund’s Construction Hub.
- Speak with members of the Australian Defence Force.
- Experience the 'Try a Skill' Interactive Displays; and
- See the WA WorldSkills Regional Competition.
Students spent the afternoon navigating their way through each exhibitor’s stand. Students benefitted from the opportunity to directly source tertiary course information from a range of TAFE, university, and private training providers; as well as directly network with some of Australia’s well-known government and private employers. It was great to see so many of our students confidently ask for information, advice, and access resources to take away with them for future reference. At the end of the event students were reminded of the importance of making informed career related decisions and to continue to seek out resources they can use to develop a suitable and meaningful individual career pathway on completion of their secondary studies.

Belridge House Basketball Heats Up!
Term 2's House Basketball competition was packed with energy, skill, and serious school spirit! With a huge number of teams entering from Years 7–12, the courts were buzzing all term long.
The standard of play was outstanding, with several younger teams making deep runs into the finals — showing that the future of Belridge basketball is bright!
The grand final was an absolute nail-biter, featuring last year’s champions — Will Parker, Patrick Oulton, Mark Tobin and Beau Sharpe — up against another talented Year 12 team of Lachy Pugh, Connor Atherden, Blair Hille, Sammy Dickerson, and Kieran Gray.
The reigning champs jumped out to a 7–2 lead (first to 10 wins), but the challengers clawed their way back to 9–9 before the final bucket sealed the deal.
Final Score: 10–9
Back-to-back champions!
Huge congratulations to all students involved and a special shoutout to our repeat champs — legends on the court!
Belridge Dominates at Champion Schools Volleyball Carnival
On Thursday, 19 June 2025, Belridge Secondary College made history at this year’s Champion Schools Volleyball Carnival, nominating a record-breaking six senior school teams — four female and two male — the highest number of teams the College has ever entered.
It was a day to remember, with our College dominating the competition and claiming victory in four of the six divisions.
RESULTS
- Girls A Division – Runners Up
- Girls B Division – Champions
- Girls C Division – Champions
- Boys B Division – Champions
- Boys C Division – Champions
The Girls A Division team delivered a stellar performance, falling just short in the grand final against a Mount Lawley team packed with state-level talent. Their achievement in reaching the A grade grand final marks them as the most successful girls’ team in Belridge Secondary College volleyball history - a result they should be incredibly proud of.
The Girls B Division side showed nerves of steel, winning back-to-back thrillers in the semi-final and grand final. Their energy, excitement, and momentum carried them all the way to a well-deserved championship.
The Girls C Division team, made up entirely of Year 11 students attending their first volleyball carnival, tied for top spot with two other schools. Thanks to a superior percentage, they were crowned champions — a fantastic result for a young and enthusiastic team.
On the Boys’ side, the Boys B Division team was a dominant force, going through the day undefeated. They played a dynamic and disciplined brand of volleyball that impressed all who watched.
The Boys C Division team dropped just one match throughout the carnival and cruised to a grand final victory with a polished and commanding performance.
All students represented Belridge Secondary College with pride and sportsmanship. Their commitment to training, willingness to give up recess and lunch times, and the support they showed each other on and off the court was outstanding.
Congratulations to all players involved — a brilliant day for Belridge volleyball!

Last Man Standing House Cricket Recap
Our second annual Last Man Standing House Cricket Competition was a hit! With eight teams from Years 7 to 12 (plus a fearless staff team), the elimination format brought high energy and big moments.
Defending champs - the Year 10 Manta Rays - were knocked out early, opening the field for a thrilling tournament. In the semi's, the Year 9 Manta Rays upset the Year 12s, while the Staff Team outplayed the Year 12 Sharks to book their grand final spot.
The final was a nail-biter, but the Staff Team clinched a tight win over the spirited Year 9’s. A huge shoutout to everyone who played and showed great House pride and sportsmanship throughout!

Principal’s Cup - Off to a Cracking Start!
The first event in the Principal’s Cup series saw the Year 12 students take on the staff in a fiery basketball battle. The staff jumped out to an early lead, but the Year 12’s, led by Patty “The Postman” Oulton, came roaring back with back-to-back-to-back buckets to steal the win!
Despite strong efforts from Mr “Dunkin” Dawkins and Mr “Splash” Ogilvie, the students claimed victory 12–7 in a thrilling opening match.
Next stop: the volleyball court! Can the staff even the series?

Principal’s Cup – Volleyball Showdown Levels the Series!
The second event of the Principal’s Cup challenge served up an absolute treat on Tuesday, 1 July 2025, as the Year 12 students took on the staff in a high-stakes volleyball clash. With the staff looking to bounce back after their narrow loss in the opening basketball encounter, the pressure was on – and they certainly delivered.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd, both teams showcased impressive skill and spirit. The staff’s experience and composure under pressure proved vital, taking out the first set 15–12 in a tightly contested battle. The second set was even more dramatic, with the score locked at 14–14. With everything on the line, the staff held their nerve to claim the final point and seal the match 2 sets to 0.
Special mentions go to Ms Currie and Mrs Radinger, who were standouts for the staff with their precision, poise, and on-court leadership. While the students played with passion and flair, they were ultimately outmatched by the polished and well-drilled staff side.
A big thank you to all players, organisers, and spectators who made the event such a success. With the series now tied at 1–1, all eyes turn to the next event in the Principal’s Cup challenge!

Elimination Day Carnival
WOW! What a day…
On Wednesday, 6 August 2025 Belridge Secondary College took 7 teams out of our 11 to the Elimination Day Carnival (as a result of finishing top of their zone at the SSWA carnivals back in Term 2).
- Across the carnival, our teams played 39 games, finishing with 29 wins and 2 draws - an incredible effort.
- 6 out of the 7 teams made it to the quarter finals, as a result of winning all 5 games, including their crossovers.
- 4 teams were unfortunately knocked out in the quarters, but that still places them somewhere between 5th and 8th in the State - a massive achievement to be proud of.
- Our Year 10 girls pulled off a nail-biting 18–17 win over Rockingham in their quarter final and will now progress to the State Finals on 20th August at Gold Netball Centre (and currently sitting in the Top 4 in the State)
A special shoutout to our Year 8 Boys team – made up of Blade Randall (Year 8) from the Specialist Netball Program and a bunch of our Year 8 Cricketers in their first year of playing netball. This team made it all the way to the GRAND FINAL competing against Aveley and took the win 16–7, making them the State Champions for Year 7–8 Boys!
Still, our biggest win of the day was how well our 80 students represented the College with outstanding behaviour, sportsmanship, and pride throughout the entire carnival. The staff are so proud of how they carried themselves on and off the court, and how high the quality of play was.
Finally, thank you to students who assisted as umpires and helpers, Mr Cheeseman, Ms Hunt and our former Prac Students; Miss Toth and Miss Cook (who returned to help on the day). These events cannot be run without you all.

Year 7 Lightning Carnival - Volleyball
What a fantastic day for Belridge Secondary College's Year 7 volleyball teams! The girls did an amazing job representing the school at the recent carnival, with some even playing volleyball for the very first time. They quickly got the hang of the game, delivering some great serves and participating in several impressive, long rallies.
Both of our teams should be incredibly proud of their performance. The students showed excellent sportsmanship, constantly encouraging and supporting each other throughout the day. Well done, girls!

Year 7 Lightning Carnival – Netball
Our Year 7 Netballers shone brightly at the Lightning Carnival on Friday, 31 August 2025, with the sun out and spirits high, joining 34 teams from schools including Ashdale, Alkimos, Butler, Duncraig, Joseph Banks, Kinross, Ocean Reef, and Wanneroo.
All three Belridge Secondary College teams demonstrated fantastic effort, teamwork, and school pride throughout the day.
- Team 1 had an outstanding day, finishing undefeated with dominant performances across all six games. Their determination, sportsmanship, and cohesion on court were a credit to the Belridge Netball Program.
- Team 2, which included a mix of Netball Academy and mainstream students, faced some tough competition but walked away with two solid wins. The team showed fantastic resilience, improvement throughout the day, and a strong sense of camaraderie – a true example of Belridge grit and growth mindset!
- Team 3 took on the Carnival with energy and enthusiasm. Their outstanding sportsmanship, encouragement of one another, and pride in representing the school were clear highlights of the day.
A massive well done to all players for their energy, commitment, and positive attitudes. A big thank you to the Year 8’s who came and helped with umpiring and scoring. You all represented Belridge Secondary College with pride on and off the court.

Year 8 Girls Lightning Carnival - Volleyball
What a fantastic day for Belridge Secondary College's Year 8 girls volleyball teams! Our students represented the school exceptionally well at the recent carnival at Ossie Indoor Beach Volleyball. With four teams competing, the day was filled with awesome rallies and excellent team spirit from everyone.
Two of our teams fought their way to the semifinals and were victorious, securing their spot in the finals. Belridge Team 2 played a nail-biting grand final against Kinross College, ultimately losing by just two points. It was an incredible effort, and they should be proud of their second-place finish.
Meanwhile, Belridge Team 1 faced off against Ocean Reef for fifth place, winning their match and ending the day on a high note.
A huge congratulations to all the girls who competed!

Year 10 Dinner Dance - A Night to Remember
On Wednesday, 2 July 2025, our Year 10 students traded in their uniforms for suits, dresses, and dazzling smiles as they celebrated the much-anticipated Year 10 Dinner Dance at the stunning AQWA venue.
The evening began with exclusive access to the aquarium, where students were invited to wander through the magical underwater exhibits between 6:00pm and 6:30pm. The calming blue lights and marine life set the tone for what would be a truly memorable night.
At 6:30pm, students entered the beautifully set main ballroom, where the atmosphere quickly turned electric. From the moment the music started, the dance floor was never empty – our students danced the night away with energy and enthusiasm that was an absolute credit to them all.
The night was made even more special with an incredible menu, a spectacular donut wall, and plenty of fun with props and costumes, as students paraded and posed, capturing memories with their friends.
A special highlight of the evening came from the venue’s Manager, who commented that it was the most well-behaved and respectful group of students they had ever hosted – a fantastic reflection of the character and maturity of our Year 10 cohort.
A big thank you goes to all the staff who attended and supported the evening. Events like these simply wouldn’t be possible without your time and care.
Well done to all involved – it was truly a night to remember!
