An exciting Belridge future ...
I would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge our students, staff and community for their contributions to a smooth and successful start to Semester Two. There has been some important events and work done that underpins the future of our school, and an exciting one it is.
New Performing Arts Centre
The plans for our new Performing Arts Centre (PAC) were unveiled to our school community at the Open Board meeting in early August. The Architects, Iredale Pederson Hook, shared the design and functionality of this incredible new space and wowed the audience. This new facility is going to take our already successful Arts Programs to a new level and enhance the opportunities for our students and the wider community. The new Performing Arts Centre is causing such interest that we had the Premier, Hon Mark McGowan, and local MP Emily Hamilton visit us this week to view the plans, tour our school and talk to school board members.
It is my pleasure to share with you some of the schematic diagrams of this exciting project in this newsletter.

Public School Review
We are a proud Independent Public School, trusted and empowered to make decisions for the students at our school. A responsibility of being an IPS school is to participate in an external school review every 3 years. We undertook our school review this term and the two reviewers confirmed what we already knew... that we are a great school. As soon as the report is made final we will present this to our school community and make it public through our website and Schools Online website.
The reviewers included comments, such as “this is a school that provides learning opportunities for all students”, “there is a sense of happiness amongst staff, students and parents” and “there is an unwavering commitment and embedded responsibility to lead. There is a wide held belief that every student deserves a chance.”
A special thank you to Scott Amy and Deb Childs (Parents and School Board Members), Primary School Principals, staff and students who met with the review team during their visit.
We look forward to sharing with all of our families our next business plan and future direction of our school during the coming months.

Immunisations
Year 10 students received their Meningococcal ACWY vaccination on Thursday 8 August. If your child was not vaccinated and you wish them to be vaccinated, this must be arranged through your local GP, as there are no catch up sessions scheduled. The final round of the Year 7 & 8 Gardasil vaccinations will be held on Wednesday 25 September. Please mark this date in your calendar (final week of term 3), as no catch up sessions have been scheduled.
Whole School Assemblies – Semester 2
Last week the Semester 2 whole school assemblies were held to recognise first semester student achievement. Academic, sporting and extra curricula activities were highlighted. It was fantastic to witness such a large number of students receive awards. I always enjoy celebrations like this that highlight the tremendous work our students do in all aspects of their schooling and the results they produce.
New Performing Art Centre – Premier’s Visit
Planning for the new Performing Arts Centre is progressing and current timelines are on schedule. The commissioned architects (Iredale Pedersen Hook) presented an overview of the current planning and design at the Open School Board meeting earlier this month.
Premier Mark McGowan, along with the Honourable Emily Hamilton MLA, visited the school on Tuesday 20 August to view the schematic designs of the new Performing Arts Centre. After a brief tour of both schools, the Premier was extremely impressed with the design layout of the new build, incorporating and remodelling with the existing PAC and site location to ensure maximum exposure within the local community. The Premier then met with members of both school boards and had an informal discussion regarding the impact the addition of the new Performing Arts Centre will have within the two school and the local community.
Athletics Carnival – Friday 6 September
The pre-carnival events have already started with the big day on Friday 6 September. It has been very encouraging with the number of students participating in the pre carnival events. Friday 6 September should be another fantastic day with the Year 12 students sporting their traditional themed outfit day. Parents/Caregivers are most welcome on the day to spectate and support their child. As a rule, we do not allow school age children/siblings to attend as they should be attending their own school. Parent/Caregiver spectators are asked to sign in through administration and receive a visitor’s badge for the day.

An important time for all students
Year 12 Students
Year 12 students should be striving for the best results possible, in order to be competitive for university or training entry. It is important that, after nearly 12 years of schooling, students strive to do their best when the end goal is in sight. All students, but especially those that have to sit exams, should have a study plan and use the ‘Smart Study’ tips given to them by their teachers. The ATAR students need to take into account the WACE exam scheduling when planning their study. I made available a booklet to all Year 12’s to use as a study plan. Parents should check their student has some form of plan, even if it is not the one provided.
University Applications
Students applying for university entry have been given their TISC Guides and information. They must enter their preference online by 30 September or a late fee of $165 applies.
Studiosity Study Assistance
Students should be making full use of the Studiosity Tutor website, which is free to use.
Year 11 Students
Year 11 students should now be aware of what is required to succeed in Senior School. The key element is regular attendance. Any student who attends less than 90% of the time is at serious risk of falling behind in their studies. Also, any Year 11 student that falls behind in their assessment work is required to remain at school each Wednesday during period 5 to complete their work. Students should not make other arrangements, such as part-time work for this period. If we require students for meetings or to complete work as above, they are expected to be available and free to stay.
All Senior Students
School Planners
All students should be using their planners to record their homework and plan to complete all assessment items. Often teachers write key messages for parents in the planners, so it would be appreciated if parents could check these planners as often as possible.
Timetabling for 2020
It is the time of the year when class lists for 2020 are being created and checked. All students should be striving to do their best and demonstrate to their teachers their true potential. Also, Year 9 students should have returned their selection forms for 2020 options by Wednesday 14 August. If this has not been returned, please make sure it is handed back to the school ASAP.
Year 10, 11 and 12 Students
The second round of the OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) commences on Monday 2 September. It is important that students attend for their tests and do their best - the tests are important for students to progress through Years 11 and 12. OLNA must be achieved to get a WACE.
Road Safety
It is a timely reminder to all to be careful on the roads. It is highly recommended that students cross Ocean Reef Road with the assistance of the crossing attendants. The speed limit on this road is 70kmh, and heading west past the school there is a blind corner. Also, students riding bikes should be wearing helmets and need to look both ways when exiting the shopping centre car parks. We ask all parents to take great care when driving near the school during starting and closing times and when picking up and dropping off students.
Here’s wishing all students a safe and successful Terms 3 and 4.

2019 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition
WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition explained
The WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition is a challenge. A challenge to be the best in the skill area! Competitions aim to test students’ skills against those of their peers. Competing will show students how their skill levels rank against others in their industry.
This year, five Year 11 students from Mr. Bond’s Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation course accepted the challenge and nominated to compete at the Skills West Careers Expo, held on Friday August 16 at the Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre.
Students Jaimie Attree, Huriana Collier, Cameron Glanville, Tom Mason and Joseph Taylor, were assessed both during and at the end of the competition by a judging panel according to a prescribed marking system. Students were presented with a certificate and a score sheet which details how they rated in each different skill area. Competition results will be announced as soon as possible. Congratulations Team Belridge!

NETTS (National Energy Technician Training Scheme)
NETTS is a collaborative Apprenticeship Program between major oil and gas companies, such as Shell, Santos, INPEX and Woodside, and is run by Programmed. The four year apprenticeship offers a fantastic and unique pathway into the Oil and Gas Industry into either Process Operator, Mechanical Fitter or Instrumentation Electrician roles (dependent on the individual company requirements for that year). The first 18 months of the apprenticeship is spent at the ACEPT TAFE Campus in Munster, whilst years 3 and 4 are spent on a swing roster to an on or offshore oil and gas facility. Programmed and Training Coordinators work closely with the Apprentices, TAFE and the Host Companies and external organisations to provide full support and guidance throughout the apprenticeship.
In January of this year, 20 new apprentices commenced in the program, chosen from over 1500 applicants. Programmed are currently recruiting for the 2020 intake, and Training Manager, Stephanie Key, recently visited Belridge to support applications from interested Year 12 students.
See Careers / Further Education section for details.

Year 7 Lightning Carnival Girls Soccer
What an amazing day! On Wednesday 31 July, we had two girl teams going up against several schools in our area, including Woodvale, Duncraig, Wanneroo, Yanchep, Joseph Banks and Ashdale. The girls had fun competing in 10 games, winning a few, drawing a few and a couple of losses. Well done girls, you represented Belridge extremely well.

Netball Academy
Thanks to all the girls who participated in the carnival throughout the day with smiles on their faces, regardless whether they won or lost. A special thanks to Lily Atkinson, Savannah Bowerman, Arwen Deans, Jorja Huntley, Teagan Sawatzky, Emily Skouros and Karla Stagg who assisted with the running of the carnival on the day and also umpiring all the Belridge teams. Overall, it was a great day that all the girls thoroughly enjoyed.
On Thursday 27th June the Year 9 Belridge Netball Academy students, as well as a few of the Year 10 Belridge Netball Academy students, spent the day umpiring the Whitfords Cell Primary Netball Lightning Carnival. This involved our students umpiring seven games of netball throughout the course of the day for our local primary schools. The girls all did a fantastic job and braved the very wet weather with big smiles on their faces throughout the day.

On Thursday 1 August, the Belridge Netball Academy had three teams competing in the Elimination Finals Carnival at Fremantle Netball Association as part of the School Sport WA High School Cup Netball Competition. The Year 10 team started off their day with a hard-fought match that ended in a draw. The Year 8 and Year 9 teams both had success in their first games of the day, coming away with a win. At the end of the primary rounds both the Year 8 and Year 10 teams finished third in their zone, and the Year 9 team finished second in their zone heading into the first Cross-over Matches of the day. All three Belridge teams fought hard in their cross-over matches against another zone, but unfortunately didn’t come away with a win and did not progress any further within the competition.
It was fantastic to see such great teamwork and sportsmanship across all the Belridge teams throughout the day. Thanks to all the girls who participated in the carnival throughout the day with smiles on their faces, regardless of whether they won or lost. All students participated to the best of their ability and should be commended on the performances they put out on court throughout the day and over the entire High School Cup Competition. A special thanks to Mr Herangi for his support throughout the day, especially with the Year 8 team, coming along as a parent helper. Also, a special thanks to Kaisee Pollock (Year 12), Mariah De Rizzo (Year 12) and Christa Smith (former student) who assisted throughout the day as umpires.

Technology & Enterprise
On the 26th June, Kate from Hospitality Group Training provided the Year 12 Hospitality students with a cooking demonstration as part of their Hospitality Ambassador Program. Chef Kate prepared a Crispy Cauliflower & Pickle Salad, while discussing her own ‘cutting edge career’ experiences. The students' engagement on a Wednesday afternoon was proof of the quality and relevance of the presentation. Not only did the students gobble up their delicious vegetables, but several stayed behind to chat to Kate about their own hospitality career goals. We look forward to this being a regular part of the Certificate II in Hospitality Course.

Have Sum Fun Mathematics Competition
During Term 2, several teams from Belridge SC in Year 7 and 8 participated in the State 'Have Sum Fun' Mathematics Online Competition, conducted by the Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA). This is a maths quiz designed to foster mathematical problem-solving in timed conditions spanning four weeks.
Our student teams performed exceptionally well in this State Competition, with our top ranking Year 7 and Year 8 teams placing 16th and 13th respectively out of more than 140 teams, comprising of the best of the best in the state. Thank you to Mrs Sanders, Mrs Millett and Mr Tennakoon for supporting these curious young students who have been awarded with certificates at our recent Middle School Awards Assembly to recognise their outstanding problem solving skills.

From Little Things Big Things Grow
Earlier this year, while on camp at Perth Zoo, our Year 7 AE students made a pledge to create a butterfly garden at school, in lieu of fundraising. From this initial idea, students worked together in an all day workshop facilitated by AE Coordinator, Glynne Bartle, on Monday 1 July to pursue this idea further. Belridge SC School Board President, Mr Scott Amy, volunteered his time to work with students on campus, alongside respective AE teachers, to support research, engage with curious minds, model effective teamwork and communication and encourage creative thinking, to devise practical solutions to the enormous task.
The Butterfly Garden idea has evolved to include a bush tucker component, edible garden, seating area, meeting place, provision for art sculptures, alignment to Aboriginal seasons and design of brick paving areas; targeting a whole school approach. The initial plans formed on the day have been submitted to the School Management Group for discussion and students await their response. The rare opportunity to workshop an idea through to a final product is one our bright young minds relished. A huge thank you to Scott for devoting his time and expertise with our students.

Youth Writers Workshop
Students involved in the Youth Writers’ Days held in Fremantle each term had the unique opportunity last term to work with award winning Australian Author, Cath Crowley. Students played with intriguing writing techniques for creating characters and plot which enabled them to write and share some creative pieces of work with other young writers from across the state. The structured writing tasks are challenging, yet inspiring, and encourage students to broaden their repertoire of literary techniques to improve their own writing.
This term students had the pleasure of working with author, Claire Zorn. Claire Zorn describes herself as “… foremost a writer of young adult fiction, but you don’t have to be a young adult to read my stuff; you could be a middle-aged uncle, or a nanna, or a thirtyish professional water-skier with a passion for hot housed orchids.” This was the honesty and humour she shared with our students who recently attended the third youth writers workshop at The Literature Centre in Fremantle.
Year 9 and Year 10 students workshopped with the highly acclaimed multiple award winning Australian author to create, write, share, provide and receive feedback, edit, rewrite, improve, refine and share again their stories. A truly engaging and inspiring day for all students.

Belridge Mount Hotham Ski Trip 2019
A group of 30 excited and eager Belridge Secondary College students departed for Melbourne on the 13th July. We flew out late on the Saturday night and by 5.30am Sunday morning we were on the bus heading towards the mountain. The bus trip usually takes 5 hours, but mother nature had a different idea for us. Due to severe weather on the mountain and a couple of buses breaking down, our bus ride took a mammoth 13 hours. All staff and students embraced this delay and we had a great time on the bus. Filling in the time by telling jokes, listening to our bus driver tell stories and singing karaoke. The karaoke was highlighted by a beautiful Andrea Bocelli performance, which almost brought the entire bus to tears.
Waking up on the mountain, the excitement was fever pitched and all involved were chomping at the bit to hit the slopes. Each morning students had lessons which they thoroughly enjoyed, and this in turn helped them develop their skills and confidence. Each student progressed into a competent skier or boarder and by the end of the trip all students were whizzing down the mountain. There were plenty of slips and spills which all students took in their stride. Some of the crash highlights were Romony Beams who attempted to break the speed of sound, eventually ending up cartwheeling down the hill in a blaze of snowy glory. Lauren Gahgan, who resembled an F1 car hitting a barrier at speed. She hit the safety net and managed to dislodge 8 poles in the process and finished in a bird nest of ski’s, poles and orange netting. And finally, Mr Timu who had a ‘near death experience’. His blood curdling screams echoed throughout Mount Hotham. Mr Timu was found by tracing a long stretch of fingernail marks down the trail, where he was found holding on for dear life. His legs dangling precariously over the edge of a vertigo-inducing drop-off. Thankfully he survived.
Each night, on the mountain, we had different activities for the group. We had Ms Mann’s Music Bingo, Mr Timu’s 2019 Mount Hotham Quiztacular, card games night and on the final night we had a bonfire under the stars.
However, all good things must come to an end, so Friday morning we were packed and ready to head back to Melbourne city. We were located right in the heart of the city which allowed us to appreciate all the landmarks, cafes and restaurants and street art. We ate at some lovely restaurants, went to the MCG to watch Richmond vs. Port Adelaide, shopped at the Emporium Shopping Complex and challenged ourselves in the Adventure Rooms.
All in all, the trip was a massive success. From the slopes to the city, the students, as well as staff, had a remarkable time. Learning how to ski or snowboard as well as spending quality times with friends is what made the trip an amazing experience, and one that will be remembered for a long time to come.
The students represented Belridge Secondary College in an outstanding manner and they are to be congratulated for this. A special mention to the teachers Mr Timu, Ms Markovic and Ms Mann who all contributed to making the trip an exceptional one. Bring on the snow in 2021!

Much Ado About Nothing
Year 11 and 12 Literature students recently ventured down to the State Theatre Centre to view a production of Shakespeare's much beloved "Much Ado about Nothing" put on by Bell Shakespeare Theatre Company. The production was incredible, and not only gave insight to Shakespeare's works, but was a brilliant theatre experience and truly highlighted the insight and camaraderie of Belridge students. Here's what a few of them had to say:
"It was a great experience"
"So amazing!"
"I can't believe he was on Home and Away"
"That has set the standard for all other productions"
"I never knew it was so funny!"

HASS Week 2019: Your Future! Your Voice!
This year, the Belridge HASS Department joined many schools around the state, celebrating HASS week for the first time. Students participated in several activities, giving them a chance to share their views about what is important to them. Using the literacy, “Roadster” activity, we asked students to write a range of responses to prompts, relating to famous people who had spoken out. Students were also asked what their wishes and concerns were for the future. Students were able to share these with the wider school community in the shape of speech bubbles, that were put on display in the library.
A speech competition was also held, where students were given the opportunity to express their concerns or interests during lunch times and recess. All the students who participated showed a very high standard of presentation skills, using a wide range of engaging speech techniques. Students shared their views and interests, across a range of topics such as: the Goldrushes, environmental issues, friendship issues, the Chinese Civil War and Brexit.
The judges were very impressed with the depth of knowledge students displayed as well as the detailed research, evident by the facts presented. The winner of the competition was Michael Lun (Year 7). Runners up were Samantha Wilson and David Panaia (Year 12). We thank all students involved for being willing to share their views and ideas.
