Welcome to our Term 3 newsletter, I am not sure how we can be halfway through the term already, but here we are!
The term got off to a great start as we welcomed our parents into the College for our second Parent Teacher interviews of the year. It was great seeing so many of you coming in to speak with our teachers and discuss your child's progress. Even having a nice cup of tea from our wonderful student leaders.
Subject selections for 2025 have been in full swing. I would like to thank Mr Cheeseman and our Careers team for their individual course counselling and efforts in ensuring our students are well placed for next year.
As part of my commitment to prioritising student voice, I had the pleasure of meeting with our Year 10-12 Student Councillors during Week 3 for morning tea. We discussed a new proposal that would allow them to work alongside the School Board on 3 student led projects that would be implemented over the next 12 months. Further details will be reviled during our next Open Board Meeting scheduled for Monday, 2 November 2024.
In Week 4 we held our last Staff Development Day of the year. The focus this term was around Respecting our Learning Environment. Staff took the time to arrange their classrooms, add to their wall displays and make the most of the learning area spaces. Staff also had the opportunity to have input into our 2025/26 maintenance plan which will be finalised later this term and shared with students during year assemblies.
A huge highlight of the term was the entry of three Belridge Secondary College teams into our very first Hydrogen Car Grand Prix. The College is proud to announce that all teams placed in the Top 10 (2nd, 8th and 10th) with BELRIDGE SECONDARY COLLEGE PLACING AS THE TOP PUBLIC SCHOOL. A big thank you to Mr Chen and Ms Edmonds for their efforts with the teams in preparation and on the day. Other highlights this term include our Year 7 Cricket Camp, Year 7 Lightning Carnival and Year 12 Outdoor Education Camps.
The College is proud to announce the return of our international and interstate tours. At the end of last term our senior school Cricket students travelled to Kuala Lumpa as part of their Cricket studies. The students had a fantastic time facing some tough opponents in some difficult conditions. A big thank you to Ms Hall and Mr Ogilvie for their planning and organisation of the tour and to Mr Hollows for giving up his time to attend and support the students.
During Week 4 of this term, our Year 9 and 10 students attended their first Canberra tour in 5 years. I have heard a mountain of positive feedback and followed their adventures on Facebook over the week. Thank you to Ms Linto, Mr Richardson, Ms Green and Mr McDonald for giving up their time to allow these wonderful opportunities for our students.
Later this week we will run our Primary Science Challenge for the third year. I can’t wait to see our amazing JLC primary students and what fantastic projects arrive. Watch this space for the photos. A big thank you to all primary teachers who have taken part with their classes.
Coming up in the second half of this term we have Numeracy Week, Whole School Athletics Carnival, OLNA, Wear it Purple Day and a Footy Colours Day fundraiser.
Year 12 students should have received a letter with some important information and key dates for the remainder of this term. Invites for our Graduation evening will follow shortly.
I look forward to sharing the rest of this bumper term with you via our Facebook and Instagram pages, please follow along.

Deputy Principal - Years 7, 8 and 9
On the back of an 11-week term, and a much deserved break, welcome back to Semester Two.
With a newsletter early on in the new Semester, it is an opportune time to introduce myself. I will be in the role of Deputy Principal for Years 7, 8 and 9 for this Semester. I have thoroughly enjoyed my start at the College, especially with the opportunity to meet so many families at the Parent Teacher Interviews in Week 1. It was great to see that so many families were able to attend and engage in positive conversations about academic progress. Feedback is not limited to evenings such as the Parent Teacher Interviews, and you are welcome to contact your child’s classroom teacher throughout the term.
NAPLAN Results
All Year 7 and 9 students should have now received their 2024 NAPLAN results. These results provide important information about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills and achievements at the time of the testing. Year 9 students would have brought home several documents relating to their results, including:
- NAPLAN Individual Student Report (their results)
- A letter explaining OLNA and prequalification
- A brochure showing the relationship between NAPLAN Individual Student Reports and prequalification
- Individual student current status - outlining if your child needs to complete any component of OLNA (numeracy, writing or reading)
We understand that NAPLAN and OLNA can be confusing if you are not familiar with it, but you are welcome to contact the College if you have any questions.
2025 Year 7 Enrolments
It is exciting to see the preparation of Year 6 students for their transition to high school next year. Visits to local primary schools have been occurring to speak to students about their transition and answer any questions or concerns that they may have. We look forward to welcoming students to the College in the later part of this year for orientation, and then for them commencing in 2025 full time.
If you currently have a child in Year 6 who attends a primary school in our local intake area, and you wish for them to attend Belridge Secondary College next year, please complete and submit an enrolment form as soon as possible. These can be collected from one of our local intake primary schools or our College reception.
Peer Mentoring
Current Year 9 students will soon be offered the opportunity to express interest in becoming a Peer Mentor in 2025. This leadership opportunity will involve supporting Year 7 students as they commence their high school journey, through a range of events and activities. Peer mentors will be given the opportunity to engage in activities to develop their leadership and mentoring skills.

Senior School
As we approach the final stretch for our Year 12 students, we have helped prepare them as best we can. We again employed the services of Elevate Education to run a workshop titled “Finishing Line”. This focused on strategies to maximise gains in the weeks leading up to exams and how to maintain motivation when we start to feel mentally drained.
This week, students will receive a copy of their Mock exam timetable. The first exam will be English which will take place on the last day of Term 3 (Friday, 20 September). The remaining exams will be during the second week of the school holidays (Monday, 30 September to Friday, 4 October). Students can now access their WACE exam timetable by logging into their TISC account. Students will need to download and print this timetable and take it to each exam.
Both Year 11 and 12 students have now received their Predicted ATAR scores. This should help identify areas of concern and provide information to make decisions on either their Year 12 pathway or their application preferences to University. As a goal, every student should have a predicted ATAR score above 70.
Early offers to University are still open, however the time is limited. First offers for this process will be announced on Monday, 2 September 2024. The second round of early offers will be Tuesday, 24 September 2024. The normal application process will still be available and closes on Tuesday, 17 December 2024. Full details of important dates are in the link TISC important dates.
This week we were lucky enough to have the Red Frogs organisation come and present to our Year 12 students about staying safe while enjoying their post Year 12 celebrations. A key message outlined the dos and don’ts while being at Leavers and dispelled some of the myths around what happens during this time.
Subject Selections
Both Year 10 and Year 11 students have now completed their course selections for 2025. The expectation now is for students to start preparing for next year by establishing meaningful study habits which will help the transition into Year 11 or build on their marks for Year 12.
Student Voice
Last Term, the Student Council put a proposal forward to our Executive team regarding the use of mobile phones before school. The student’s proposal was well researched and presented in a very positive manner. The proposal has been approved on a trial basis and will now reflect to following;
Phones must be off and away by the time the bell goes for the start of Period 1. Students are now allowed to access their phones before school and again at the end of the school day. If students are caught using their phone during the school day, it will be confiscated. On the first occasion, the students will get their phone back at the end of the school day. On the second occasion, a parent/guardian will need to come and collect the phone. If a student refuses to hand their phone over to the teacher, a further consequence will be imposed. The goal is to reduce distractions at school and foster learning opportunities in the classroom.
State Representatives
We are pleased to announce we have created an Honour Board display of our State Representatives for 2024. Framed pictures of our students and their achievements are on display in the hallway of the Gymnasium. We will continue to build on this and celebrate the achievements of these amazing students. If a student has represented their state or country in any sporting event and we do not know about it, please see Mr Cheeseman with the details so we can recognise your success. Thank you.
Mr Cheeseman
Deputy Principal - Years 10, 11 and 12
Although Mr Dyer hasn’t been seen around the College of late, after an outstanding 48-year career with the Department of Education, and 26 years’ service with Belridge Secondary College, he has recently decided it is time to retire.
Mr Dyer arrived at our doorstep in 2001, teaching mainly in the Mathematics department, along with various other roles in student services as a Year Coordinator from 2006-2008, and a stint as Head of Mathematics. Mr Dyer always took great pride in his work and the profession.
He was also a master at bringing people together. His key role in the staff association helped raise the spirits of many after the weeks work, where he would assist with end of week staff socials, organising whole school staff events such as morning teas, functions, and the Christmas party, all of which was very much valued and will be remembered fondly by staff.
Merv would have seen many changes in education and technologies during his career, from the blackboard to spirit duplicator, to the chalkboard, whiteboard, overhead projector, TVs on wheels and videos, the Acorn computer all the way to current digital projectors and the interactive board.
He was always willing to help-out colleagues and students, which was a pleasure to witness. Many staff have spoken highly of Mr Dyer’s reliability, high levels of organisation and outstanding attention to detail. The fact that Mr Dyer has kept the marks book from every child he has ever taught since 1977 shows the kind of person he is - caring and committed.
Merv has loved his time teaching and commented that ‘Belridge Secondary College is a school he has loved’. During his exit interview Merv commented that he was especially proud of the following achievements during his career:
- 2009 placing in Top 10 classes in WA in Calculus
- 2009 BSHS made Top 50 Schools in WA
- As Year Coordinator his cohort was the first to achieve 100% graduation.
Along with our whole school community, we are sincerely grateful for Merv’s long-standing contribution to Belridge Secondary College and to the education of our young people and wish him a long, healthy, and content retirement.
What a fantastic week enjoying our PIP Experiences! Students had a blast watching a movie with popcorn, gaming on the PlayStation, and savoring some tasty pizza. Whilst others took Peanut for a fun walk – such a great way to spend their PIP Points! Look out for the PIP Stalls scheduled for Week 10 Term 3!

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE: MICHELLE DRAGICEVICH Hi Team Belridge! I am Nurse Michelle, and I would like to introduce myself and my role at Belridge Secondary College. It has been a long winding professional journey, starting with battle casualty and trauma training as a HM Forces Nurse to Senior Research and Intensive Care positions, traversing the globe for funseys and arriving in Oz to the lofty and humbling role of Director of Nursing to Dajarra (population 300 in the A&E end of Queensland!). I’m a Mum to two gorgeous humans who have shaped and informed my practice, gaining insight into the more challenging and less defined areas of SEWB. I am currently completing my Post Grad in Child and Family Health and consolidating 20 years working with kids. In Perth metro I have had the honour of working at PMH (RIP), Child Development Service, Aboriginal Health Team, Refugee Health and School Health. What is the role of the School Health Nurse/ what can I do for our community?
The nurse role must comply with State, Federal and Professional legislation, Standards and Policy. So, to clarify the stance regarding First Aid: “the community health nurse should assist in a medical emergency at school if they are present at the time of an incident or utilised as a secondary consultation where there is concern about the nature of the injury or where incidents are recurrent. Although not responsible for development of first aid policy and procedures, the community health nurse can use their expertise and knowledge to provide guidance”. Should you wish to discuss any aspect of school health, including curriculum and classroom support please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Nurse Fiona. |

Sometimes, students’ plans incorporate time with me as a reward or support strategy. If you would like me to visit a class or feel a student may benefit from time with me, please contact Heather (my Mum) in Student Services. |
Have you signed up for your child's FREE vaccinations?
Free vaccinations at school to protect your child against serious infectious diseases
Each year, nurses attend secondary schools across WA to provide free adolescent vaccinations as recommended under the National Immunisation Program.
The Department of Health has identified public school students in Years 7 and 10 whose parents have not provided a response (consent or declination) to the request for their child to be immunised. They will be sending a text message to these parents which will include links to the secure online consent form, as well as the HealthyWA School Based Immunisation webpage. Should a hard copy form be preferred, this is available through the school.
Year 7 Students
Year 7 students can get the Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and a booster dose of the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine. These protect against whooping cough, tetanus, genital warts and some cancers.
Year 10 Students
Year 10 students can get the meningococcal vaccine to protect against four strains of the disease. Meningococcal disease can be extremely serious, spread to others and older teenagers have the highest rates of infection.

Investigation: Genetics
On Wednesday, 26 June 2024, Year 12 ATAR Human Biology students attended the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
Students participated in the ‘Understanding Mutations’ session, which explored the different types of genetic mutations in human populations and the impact of mutations on the health of an organism. Students were introduced to the rare genetic disorder, Myoglobinopathy, which currently affects six families (27 individuals) worldwide. The Neurogenetic Disease Laboratory at Harry Perkins uncovered the cause of this rare muscle disease, a specific mutation in the myoglobin gene in 2019.
Students then used gene technologies such as Polymerase Chain Reaction and Gel Electrophoresis in the Wet Lab to identify the myoglobin gene and the incidence of this disorder within one family group and produced DNA profiles of their results. Analysis of the DNA sequence with the specific mutation was followed by a tour of the state-of-the-art laboratories. This excursion was a fascinating experience for the students.

Specialist Netball - Fast Five House Carnival
On Friday, 14 June 2024, we held the annual Fast 5 House Cup competition for our Netball Academy. This is between Manta Rays, Marlins and Sharks Houses and involves all students from Years 7 to 12 in the Belridge Netball Academy.
Teams consist of students from all year groups combining on the day to play the Fast 5 style of netball, where 1, 2 and 3 points are awarded for goals, depending on where the shooters are standing when they take their shots. There are only 5 players on the court from each team and so there are no wing positions. The games were 4 quarters of 6 minutes in length with each team choosing one quarter as their power play. This is where points for this quarter are doubled. There are rolling subs so team members can come on quickly without waiting for a break. When teams were not fixtured on to play, they were required to umpire and score.
Twelve teams in total competed. A big thank you to the Year 11/12 Certificate III in Sport and Recreation class who were responsible for the team organisation for the day. This is built into their course and a requirement for them to complete.
Most games were very even with only a few goals difference in each. There were quite a few 2 and 3 points scored over the day which was a huge a highlight!
In the end, the grand final was between Manta Rays 2 and Sharks 5, with Manta Rays winning 39 - 26. A very exciting game to watch with multiple changes in the lead over the duration of the game.
Congratulations to all team members of Manta Rays 2 as well as our MVP’s for each house (who were also awarded 20 PIP points):
Sharks: Olivia Williams (Year 11)
Marlins: Taya Hynes (Year 12)
Manta Rays: Tara Diersen (Year 9)
This year we introduced a best dressed component of the day which encouraged students to really embrace that it was a ‘House’ competition. Our best dressed awards went to:
Sharks: Madelin Gibbs, Madison Sproul and Skye Gray
Marlins: Taya Hynes and Liv Young
Manta Rays: Tara Diersen and Tarli Appleby
These students were awarded 15 PIP points each.
We finished off a fantastic day with some delicious food in the school café, followed by presentations.
The weather was beautiful over the day making it a great competition between the three houses. It was great to see all year groups interacting in their teams on and off the court to represent the Netball Academy. The Senior girls especially, took on a leadership role in their teams where they helped the younger girls with their netball skills and confidence. We look forward to a bigger and better comp next year!

Specialist Netball - Elimination Carnival
On Thursday, 20 June 2024, Belridge Secondary College showcased their netball prowess by sending six strong teams to the elimination finals in Perth, following their impressive performances at the SSWA Netball Carnival.
The Year 7.1 Team had a commendable run, finishing third in their zone. They fought hard in the crossover final but were ultimately overpowered by Atwell Year 8's, marking the end of their journey.
The Year 8.1 Team delivered a mix of performances. They won against Swan Christian with a 21-10 victory, then faced a setback against a dominant Warwick, losing 16-8. They bounced back with a convincing 21-5 win against Perth Modern, securing second place in their zone. In the crossover final, they emerged victorious against Melville 2 with a 12-6 win. However, they met an impressive opponent in Living Waters and couldn’t maintain their winning streak in the subsequent crossover final.
The Year 10.1 Team showed exceptional skill despite missing two of their strong team members. They started the day with a 20-12 win against Living Waters. The Year 10's dominated their zone, finishing at the top after claiming victory over Bunbury Cathedral. The first cross over final had them convincingly beat Byford. Despite their success, they faced a challenging match in the finals and were defeated by St. Brigid's, which was the same team that defeated them in last year's state finals.
The Opens (Years 11/12.1 Team) had a stellar run, defeating Churchlands 17-8 and Rockingham 19-10. They continued their winning streak against SEDA, Darling Range, and Kolbe, placing them undefeated and at the top of their pool. In the quarterfinals, they faced Mandurah Cathedral College, a team that had edged them out in the previous state finals. The game was intense and closely contested, ending in a draw with just one minute remaining. Unfortunately, Belridge couldn't hold on and lost by a narrow margin of 2 points.
The Year 11 Boys team also competed admirably, with their skills developing as the day went on. However, their crossover final saw them compete against our Belridge Year 12 Team for a spot in the finals. This was a hard-fought game, with the Year 11s showing the Year 12's just how far they had come with their skills. The Year 12's were able to compose themselves and came out on top.
The Year 12 Boys faced Bunbury Catholic in the last final of the day. Bunbury showcased athleticism and strong tactics to put them in front at halftime. Unfortunately, the Belridge Boys lost a player due to injury and just weren't strong enough to come back against Bunbury.
Belridge Secondary College's netball teams demonstrated remarkable skill and determination throughout the carnival, representing the the College well and showcasing their talent on a competitive stage. They should all be very proud of their performances and how far they got on the day.

House Basketball Competition
A Slam Dunk Success!
The House Basketball competition saw an impressive turnout this year, with 16 teams (all year groups and 4 staff teams) entering the fray. The competition was fierce, showcasing the high level of talent and enthusiasm among students and teachers.
Each game was a display of skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship, making for an exhilarating experience for both players and spectators alike. It was heartening to see such a strong sense of community and participation, reflecting the growing popularity of basketball in our school.
The finals were particularly intense, with the top teams battling it out in a nail-biting showdown that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. In the end, the Year 11 team emerged victorious, but every participant should be proud of their efforts and the spirit they brought to the court.
Congratulations to all the teams for their hard work and dedication. We look forward to an even more exciting competition next year!

Year 7 Lightning Carnival - Netball
The Year 7 Netball Carnival was a great day out for students to work as a team and build their skills in netball. Even as the rain poured down throughout the day our students showed incredible spirit, trying hard and persisting through the challenging weather conditions.
Belridge Secondary College had four teams participating (two from the Specialist Netball Academy and two made up of General PE students).
The General PE students showed great resilience only having seven players per team, playing all games all day and did not complain once. One team had majority wins for the day and the second had a tough division, so set their target as just scoring goals, which they achieved on the day.
Team 1 Specialist Netball Team in A division had an impressive run, showcasing their skills and teamwork in every match. They had some high scoring games and were dominant in all their games except for the final match of the day where they narrowly lost by just 3 points to Duncraig SHS, who had some talented tall players.
Team 2 Specialist Netball Team in B Division also had an outstanding day, losing only one game to Kinross HS A Team. Their consistency and hard work in class has paid off, reflecting their preparation leading up to the carnival.
Overall, the day was a success, with all teams representing our school with pride and determination. Well done to ALL players for their exceptional efforts and positive attitude!

Malaysia Cricket Tour 2024
On Saturday, 22 July 2024, Year 11 and 12 students from our specialist cricket program were finally able to experience the long-awaited senior school International Cricket Tour, travelling to Kuala Lumpur in the heart of Malaysia for eleven amazing days of cricket and immersion in cultural education.
The first day commenced with the 272 staircase of the Batu Caves - an amazing colourful climb with the only worry that the monkeys liked to take food and phones from unsuspecting travellers on the way up to the caves!

Following this, we travelled to the Kings Palace, viewed some cultural landmarks and the national gardens which were not far from our accommodation. A busy first day, but very enjoyable, especially with our wonderful tour guide Ali who ended up becoming an honorary member of the Belridge Cricket Academy by the end of the tour!

The next five days were jam packed with cricket matches against an Under 19’s school cricket academy where our two teams played the majority of T20 cricket games. Little did we know that our amazing hosts had turned this into a mini tournament and organised trophies and a presentation at the end of the games. Students experienced elite facilities and played on grounds that normally host international games for Malaysia with the standard of our opposing players providing great challenges and experience for our cricketers. At the end of the five days of playing, our hosts prevailed with the trophy, with Belridge Secondary College only managing to win 3 out of our 8 games, with some nail-biting finishes including one day where one team won off the last ball, and the other team lost on the last ball.

Our last two days were more restful and included activities such as Go Karting followed by more sightseeing, including the Patronus Twin Towers (one of the tallest buildings in the world). Students travelled up to the 40th floor to take in the views from the Shy Bridge and then bravely up another 40 floors to the top of the building. Luckily not too many were afraid of heights.
One of the last days was spent at Sunway Lagoon - Malaysia’s premier water park. We all agreed that it was one of the best water parks we have experienced. Our final day was spent packing our bags, going to some markets, and then heading to the airport.

Each international cricket tour is unique and fantastic, but this is certainly one that will go down as one of the best tours we have done to date. Thank you to all staff, students and parents that made this trip possible. A special mention and sincere thanks Mr Hollows and Mrs Hall for accompanying students and their support in making this incredible experience possible.
