Investigation: Genetics
On Wednesday, 26 June 2024, Year 12 ATAR Human Biology students attended the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
Students participated in the ‘Understanding Mutations’ session, which explored the different types of genetic mutations in human populations and the impact of mutations on the health of an organism. Students were introduced to the rare genetic disorder, Myoglobinopathy, which currently affects six families (27 individuals) worldwide. The Neurogenetic Disease Laboratory at Harry Perkins uncovered the cause of this rare muscle disease, a specific mutation in the myoglobin gene in 2019.
Students then used gene technologies such as Polymerase Chain Reaction and Gel Electrophoresis in the Wet Lab to identify the myoglobin gene and the incidence of this disorder within one family group and produced DNA profiles of their results. Analysis of the DNA sequence with the specific mutation was followed by a tour of the state-of-the-art laboratories. This excursion was a fascinating experience for the students.
