What a bumper term we have had!
We have been a busy bunch at Belridge Secondary College over the last few weeks with so many special events and activities taking place. At the start of the term our Joondalup Learning Community (JLC) Primary Schools took part in our second Science Week Challenge. This year an Education Support category was included. We were absolutely blown away with the standard on display. Their efforts and engagement in this activity surpassed all our expectations. Projects included Solar Ovens, Kinetic Cars and my personal favourite – Robot Teachers. I would like to thank my JLC Principal colleagues and staff across all schools for getting on board with this initiative. Congratulations to Joondalup PS for taking away the shield this year. We can’t wait to do it all again next year.
During Week 4, the College held several Science Week activities for our own students. This included Lego Masters Bridge Building, Laws of flight paper plane competition, Robot Wars Robotic incursion and Super Slime comp. Students thoroughly enjoyed the week’s events and have provided lots of positive feedback. A big thank you to Mr Crosbie, Ms Howard and Mrs Hall for their efforts.
Week 5 we celebrated Book Week, lots of pirates and wizards about the place with some amazing individual costumes from the students. The photo booth was a huge hit as usual. A big thank you to Ms Baker and her team for their work.
This term we also celebrated EA Appreciation Week with a lovely morning tea. Our Home Economics team also organised a 3-week Food Hall event for staff through our Hospitality program to provide accreditation to the students for their Certificate course.
Other events we celebrated were Wear it Purple Day, Footy Colours Day and R U OK? Day, along with a special visit form the Minister of Energy and Climate change who provided a forum with our students. Caitlin Collins also visited our student council, providing key learnings around leadership and making a difference in the community.
The Arts have also had an amazing term. Sophie Rohwer (Year 8) was a winner in the annual Wool4School competition coming 3rd in the whole of Australia!
Our Guitar Ensemble received the Excellence Award at the WA Guitar Classical Guitar Ensemble Festival (second highest level award).
We then held our Drama Performance – Ruby Moon, our Dance Showcase – Evolution and finally our Elite Music Concert. All of which were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. The time, effort and dedication that went into these 3 shows was immense. The performances were mesmerising and really showcased the talent we have here at Belridge Secondary College. A huge thank you to the Arts staff for their support of each of these events. I know it meant a lot to our students and families.
Week 7 also saw the College hold its annual School Athletics Carnival, please see inside for details on our sporting successes. Again, another show of togetherness and team spirit. A massive thank you to Mr Bennett and the HPE staff for their efforts on the day and in the weeks leading up to the event. Our Year 12s looked fantastic in their costumes and the general turn out and participation was amongst the highest I’ve seen.
Our Open Board meeting is fast approaching on Monday 6 November, please sign up and come along (details on how to register under School Board News). Your ideas and views really do matter and help support the College in making decisions that assist us on our improvement journey.
And finally, good luck to our Year 12s who will be completing their final exams/courses, work placements or VET programs very shortly. We are looking forward to seeing them at our final breakfast and farewell assembly next term followed by our main event – graduation!
Wishing you all a safe and restful break, see you next term.

Term 3 seems to have flown by with many exciting events occurring around the school. I hope you have time during the school holidays to relax and make memories with your children ready for an action-packed Term 4.
Enrolments
We are now planning for 2024 and beginning to organise classes. Therefore, if you currently have a child in Year 6, in our intake area, and would like them to attend Belridge Secondary College next year, please complete and submit an enrolment form at our reception as soon as possible. Either collect our pack from one of our partner primary schools or from our reception. It is essential to have your child enrolled now so they do not miss out on important Transition Days and the Orientation Day planned during Term 4.
Buses
A reminder to all students that when they are travelling to and from school to remember our school values: Respect yourself, Respect each other and Respect the environment. Transperth has recently informed us that behaviour from a few of our students has not been reflective of these values. Transperth has asked us to share their expectations of all patrons when using their services; see https://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/Contact-Us/Fines-and-Infringements
Please have a conversation with your child regarding behaviour on the buses and let us know if you have any concerns.
Bunnings Sausage Sizzle - Can you help?
On Saturday 21 October, we will be holding a sausage sizzle at Bunnings Joondalup to raise money for the C8 camp in 2024 for all Year 8 students (currently Year 7 students). Alison Zarrop (Year 7 Coordinator) will be sending out more information and calling for volunteers in the coming weeks. All money raised goes directly to support students so please put your name down to help out on the day.

Year 12
The Year 12s are reaching the final few weeks of their high school education, it is an important time for all Year 12 students to make sure they get the best result from their 12 years of schooling. Students undertaking ATAR courses should be busy preparing for both their mock and final WACE exams.
Personalised Mock Exam timetables have been issued to students. These will be held in the second week of the school holidays, except for English which will be held on the last day of this term (Friday, 22 September). If students miss an exam due to illness, they must have a medical certificate. If no medical certificate is presented, they will be awarded a zero for the exam as per the SCSA policy.
Students have also been given their personalised SCSA WACE examination timetables for both practical and written ATAR examinations. These are also available on the SCSA student portal at https://student.scsa.wa.edu.au/student-portal. Students require these timetables as “tickets” for entry to the examination room. All written examinations will be held at the College. A reminder that all SCSA WACE practical examinations will be held during the first week of the Term 3 holidays. Students should ensure they are familiar with the venue details provided and the time allocated.
Afterschool ATAR revision classes commenced in Week 6 and will conclude in Week 9 of term. This is a great opportunity for our students to get additional assistance from an outside presenter with extensive ATAR course delivery experience and marking of ATAR examinations.
Year 11
It is important that Year 11 students keep up to date with their work and submit all assessments on time. The achievement of 14 C grades over Years 11 and 12 is one of several SCSA requirements to achieve the WACE. As a guide, to keep on track to achieve the WACE, students need to achieve at least 8 C grades by the end of Year 11, or a minimum of 6 C grades if they are on track to complete a Certificate II. Students not achieving these targets place themselves in jeopardy of not meeting WACE requirements by the end of Year 12. No C grades are awarded for non-completion of certificates. Please note, students who are behind in their certificates or late with assessment submissions are required to stay back with me on Wednesdays Period 5 to catch-up.
There is a strong relationship between poor results and attendance less than 90%. Therefore, I cannot stress enough how important it is for students to attend school regularly.
Timetable 2024
I am currently formulating the 2024 school timetable. Students in Years 8 to 11 have submitted their course and elective preferences. All effort is made to accommodate student preferences, however, at times this may not be possible. Students who have not submitted any preferences will be chased-up and allocated into classes.
School Gates
The College has installed automatic gates to the main carpark and reception. All gates (including service road, Art and back gates) will be closed from 9am. Visitors to the school must enter through the reception gates where you can buzz to gain entry.
Thank you for your understanding.
Have a safe and relaxing holiday break.

R U OK? Day
This important day was recognised by staff on Thursday 14 September. You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just be a good friend and a great listener. Start a conversation with someone you know who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs – connection is key.

Congratulations to the exceptional Year 11 and 12 Drama students for the absolutely mesmerizing performance of 'Ruby Moon'. It was truly a remarkable showcase of talent, dedication, and hard work, directed by their talented Drama and Dance teacher, Miss Taylor Robinson.
The passion and creativity that the students brought to the stage were evident in every aspect of the production. From the compelling acting to the intricate set design, 'Ruby Moon' was a masterclass in theatrical excellence. It was evident that each student put their heart and soul into the performance, making it a captivating and memorable experience for everyone in the audience.
Ms Taylor Robinson's guidance and direction have undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping this outstanding production. Her expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment to nurturing the students' talents have resulted in a performance that stands as a testament to the incredible impact of The Arts education.

Dance Showcase 2023
We are thrilled to shine the spotlight on our recent dance showcase, ‘Evolution,’ which was an absolute triumph of talent and dedication leaving our audience in awe of the incredible talent on display. Under the guidance of our dance teacher, Taylor Robinson, whose unwavering commitment and expertise played a pivotal role in shaping our students skills and confidence.
The success of this showcase would not have been possible without the dedication and handwork of our talented students, who continue to impress us with their growth and artistry. We also acknowledge the efforts of our dedicated staff who assisted in making the showcase a resounding success.
Together, we celebrated the evolving artistry and passion of our schools dancers, and we look forward to more remarkable showcases in the future!

Music Concert 2023
On Tuesday 12 September, we opened our Auditorium doors for the Elite Music Concert 2023. Our young band students did an amazing job opening the night's entertainment, followed by solo and duet performances in percussion and flute. After the break our Guitar ensemble gave a fantastic performance of Clocks by Coldplay. This was followed some individual solo performances on guitar.
Some of our Year 11 general students, Monty Row (Drums), William Hyder (Guitar), and Charlotte Wood (Voice), presented recital performances as a part of their course. These were an absolute joy to watch. A special mention to Charlotte Wood on the piano singing Vampire - amazing
The night was rounded out by a self-composed piano piece from Jai Mortimer. This is the sound track that accompanies his video game that he is in the process of producing.
Again, nights like this cannot happen without the support and dedication of a wonderful team. A big thank you to Jodie Grieve, Taylor Robinson, Ella Sobey, Noelene Hales, Kristy Wintle and the sound and lights technician's Liam and Jordan for their efforts and support on the night. A special mention of thanks and appreciation to student, Dashlen Beasley, who helped in many areas throughout the evening.
A massive thank you to Zac and all of our instrumental music teachers who take the time to support and nurture the talent of our students - what great talent we have!

The Importance of Climate Action
On Wednesday 23 August, Belridge Secondary College was privileged to host the MINISTER’S CLIMATE ACTION FORUM delivered by The Hon Reece Whitby (Minister for Environment, Climate Action, Racing and Gaming) and Caitlin Collins MLA (Member for Hillary’s). The purpose of this forum was to reach out to our younger generation to explore current action projects, explain plans in process and discuss the importance of how using cleaner resources to generate power can assist us now and into the future to reach net zero carbon emissions. A key message was the importance of collaboration with the community and the involvement of young people in future decision making. During the forum, students had the opportunity put questions to the Minister and share their views on this topic. Although it will take time to reach our carbon emissions goals and targets, WA is best placed to achieve success.

Fashion Design
Congratulations to Year 8 student, Sofie Rohwer, from our Fashion program for coming THIRD in the Wool4School Design national competition. Wool4School is an annual event that encourages emerging fashion designers to promote the unparalleled properties and benefits of wool. As the competition is open to secondary school students in Australia, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and Italy, Sofie's achievement is exceptional. The judges commented that Sofies entry showed ''an excellent understanding of the properties of wool and how her chosen muse would benefit from its use. Also, the illustrations were very beautiful."
Sofie's entry, plus the Wool4school designs from all students in our Fashion program will be on display at the Arts Showcase in Term 4 on Wednesday, 8 November.

City of Joondalup Youth Conference
During Week 6, the Year 9 Student Councillors, along with the Student Councillors from the Education Support Centre, had the privilege of attending the City of Joondalup Youth Conference. Our guest speaker, Ash Penfold from Corroboree for Life, is a former Belridge student doing amazing things empowering youth and the community. We had a fantastic time in the workshop, exploring what leadership means to us and how we can inspire our community. There was also a sitting of local council which provided an insight into all of the behind-the-scenes in leadership.

Leadership Workshop
Our local MLA, Caitlin Collins paid our Student Council a visit to share her wisdom with us on leadership and how she handles everyday scenarios that come through her office. Ranging from noisy neighbours to climate change, we workshopped these scenarios and with some guidance from Caitlin, came to some reasonable solutions. We always enjoy Caitlin's visit and took away that it can take teamwork, reaching out and working together to reach the best solutions.

Team Spirit
On Thursday, 7 September, Belridge Secondary College and the Education Support Centre community came together to raise funds for the Fight Cancer Foundation and support kids with cancer to assist them in continuing their education whilst receiving treatment. Students and staff donned their favourite sports team colours for a gold coin donation, raising $300! Thank you to Mrs Wright and the Student Council for organising this popular annual fundraiser.

Year 12 Outdoor Education Dwellingup Camp 2023
The last ever Outdoor Education Camp for our Year 12 students was finally upon us. After weeks of planning and excitement, the students packed their bags, and the trailer, and our two classes made their way to Dwellingup for their final adventure.
The weather couldn't have been more different for the two camps. Camp 1 saw students complete their 15km hike in challenging conditions. The sunshine tried to peak through the rain clouds, but the wet weather persisted. The students did an amazing job keeping their spirits high through the rain and all eventually made it to camp. Once tents were set up and meals were prepared, all huddled around the fire to keep warm or dry out some very damp clothing. Day 2 and the canoeing was again marred by the weather, although some would have ended up wet anyway after a few mishaps over the rapids! One group only had two canoes make it through unscathed, while the other group managed to stay afloat. Again, the fire was our saviour, especially when the lightning storm raged overhead. Some students learnt the hard way that an ill-constructed tent didn't keep the rain out, and wet pillows don't make for a good night's sleep.
Camp 2 saw clear skies and sunshine for entire camp which was a pleasant change. The hike was a little more challenging with the heat, but again, students kept their spirits high. The paddle down the Murray river on day 2 was also under clear blue skies, but with a drop in the water level, the rapids were a little trickier this time. Some still found staying upright a challenge and a few much needed baths were taken. The standard of meals definitely dropped for the second group, but at least all stayed dry.
There were some interesting and revealing conversations around the fire. Keeping warm and toasting marshmallows saw students open up and share some deep and meaningful conversations and many laughs. Both groups had perfect conditions for the high ropes course on day 3. Although there were a few tears and screams, all students challenged themselves and made the most of their time in the trees. Even a few with fears of heights managed to overcome and showed resilience by joining their classmates 20 metres in the air. A great way to end their final high school camp.

Geography Field Trip
On Friday, 25 August and Thursday, 31 August respectively the General Geography students undertook fieldwork in Perth's Central Business District (CBD) and Inner Mixed Zone (IMZ).
The students departed from Edgewater station at 08:45 and made their way (via train and CAT bus) to Claisebrook Cove. It was here the students observed and recorded the features that makes this area one of the most desirable inner-city locations surrounding Perth but also evidence of East Perth's industrial past, culminating with a field sketch of Optus Stadium from the picturesque Victoria Gardens.
Departing Victoria Gardens (again on CAT bus) the students then headed to the cultural hub of Perth, Northbridge. Students made their way through Yagan Square and then along James, Lake, and Aberdeen Streets, witnessing the sights, smells, and sounds of the diverse food scene, independent retailers, and a thriving arts and entertainment scene.
Students then made their way past Boola Bardip, across Wellington St, through a maze of arcades to end up in the financial core of WA, St Georges Terrace. It was here students observed and recorded various urban processes, as well as appreciating Perth's global position in the resources sector before making their way through London Court and into the Hay St Mall for lunch.
During lunch, which gave students free-range of the malls, they were able to observe and make note of all the factors that make this area the retail centre of Perth, including undertaking some retail therapy of their own. Once lunch concluded, we made our way to the Perth Underground and headed back to the suburbs.
A special thanks to both classes for their exemplary behaviour on the day.

Year 9 Food for Others classes have completed a unit this term on Café Culture where they identified the elements of a café. Students investigated menu design and how to cater for different dietary requirements of patrons. Over the term they devised and produced a breakfast dish suitable for service at a café, as well as devising a dish that would suit a particular dietary need. They also designed a menu for their own café.
Students finished off the term by creating and producing 'Freak Shakes'. They were provided with the basics of milk and ice-cream and needed to consider their flavour base and choose their add-ins. Students had a lot of fun creating a range of different shakes that would be at home on any café menu.

Wear It Purple Day - Write Your Story
On Friday, 25 August 2023, Belridge Secondary College LGBTQIA+ youth and allies united to celebrate ‘Wear It Purple Day’.
By wearing purple, we demonstrated to rainbow young people that they are seen, supported and respected, acknowledging all have the right to be proud of who they are and who they are becoming.
This year’s theme, "Write Your Story", is created by Wear It Purple’s Youth Action Council (YAC) to give voice to growing rhetoric in the LGBTQIA+ youth community around the importance of personal expression and individuality.
On the day, we enjoyed fundraising, by completely selling out our delicious, rainbow cupcakes; raising $392 to support rainbow youth.
We also ran a WEAR IT PURPLE, colouring-in competition and wish to congratulate the winner Neisha Warick, on a beautiful submission.
Overall, it was a very successful day and I want to thank my Rainbow Club members for all of their hard work and dedication, it was much appreciated!

High Schools Cup Volleyball 2023
In a thrilling showcase of skill, camaraderie, and sportsmanship, Belridge Secondary College's volleyball teams left an indelible mark at the recent state-wide High Schools Cup tournament on Friday, 18 August. With both Year 12 male teams, Division A and Division B, representing the school with pride, the event was a true testament to their dedication and hard work.
The Boys A Team displayed exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Despite finishing just outside the finals, they played an outstanding match against Shenton College, demonstrating their determination and commitment on the court. Their passion for the game was evident in every spike and serve, and their attitude throughout the competition was commendable.
Meanwhile, the Boys B Team had an impressive run, making it to the quarterfinals before a close match against Sevenoaks Senior College. Their remarkable performance showcased their talent and resilience, earning them the respect of opponents and spectators alike. Their dedication to improving their skills and representing Belridge Secondary College was truly inspiring.
Both teams embodied the school's values of sportsmanship, dedication, and teamwork. Their positive behaviour on and off the court reflected the spirit of the High Schools Cup tournament. Belridge Secondary College is incredibly proud of its athletes for their exceptional representation and their commitment to upholding the school's reputation.

Athletics Carnival 2023
The 2023 Inter-House Athletics Carnival was held on Friday, 1 September.
Our annual sports day provides students time to relax, mingle and participate for their 'House' in a whole school event. The weather forecast was a concern as rain was on its way, however, thankfully the day turn out great with nice conditions. The rain finally made an appearance at the end of the carnival day, but we had luckily completed all presentations.
The Carnival ran smoothly and with minimal issues, which is testament to the many, many people who helped in the weeks leading up to the big day. Thank you to all staff who were involved in any way, shape or form. A special thanks also to our school gardener, Darren, who has been preparing the grounds and oval with minimal fuss and, as always, in a professional manner.
Students conducted themselves amazingly, and it was a great spectacle to witness so many keen and enthusiastic students competing, doing their best and having fun.
