As Semester 1 draws to an end, I would like to take the time to thank the staff and school community for their support over the last Semester. In what has been a difficult and tiring time for all, staff have worked hard to ensure our students are supported and that our educational programs have continued.
Earlier this term the College held its Year 7 Parent Afternoon Tea. This was an informal event, focusing on putting a face to a name and having the opportunity to ask any questions. Big thanks to Rebecca Edmonds and Chadd Richardson for their work with the Year 7 cohort. Both on the day and over the weeks that have followed, we have received some really positive feedback regarding our practice both academically and in the pastoral care space.
This term also sees the start of our subject selection process. This will take place online this year for the first time using the Platform SSO (Subject Selection Online). Over the last year the college has introduced several new courses for our students, with a strong focus on the inclusion of STEM capabilities, ensuring our students are prepared and ready for the careers of the future.
Our Year 11 2023 subject selection process also start this term. This is a very important decision for many of our students, some of whom may need a little guidance. A parent information evening will be held on Tuesday 28 June to assist with the selection process. For students who are unsure or just require some general career advice, counselling sessions are available to book. This is a really important decision as we want to ensure our students are on the best possible pathways for them to achieve individual success.
On the 3rd of June the College was host to our annual Joondalup Learning Community (JLC) Conference Event. This is the time of the year when our network schools can come together and share a full day of professional learning. This year the conference was designed for our Education Assistants and focused on their impact in the classroom. The sessions were planned and delivered by the amazing Natalie Hatton. On behalf of the JLC principals I would like to thank Natalie for her time, passion and commitment in this area. An event like this takes an extraordinary amount of organisation to come to fruition, I would like to thank Emma Smith (Edgewater Primary School) for her leadership in this space along with JLC representatives from our network schools. The day was a fantastic event and has received a wealth of positive feedback from attendees.
There are a few staffing updates that I would like to make you aware of for next Semester. Our new Year 7 2023 Year Coordinator has been selected, congratulations to Alison Zarrop who will start this role next term preparing for our new arrivals in 2023. Lucas Francis has also been successful in fulfilling the role as Year 8 Coordinator for the remainder of 2022 replacing Narae Howard who is on maternity leave.
A reminder that reports will be on their way home via email, they will also be available on Connect (online or download Connect Now App). If you do not receive your child’s report, please contact the College.
I hope you all have a restful school break and get to spend some quality time with family and friends. Term 3 is always a big one, watch this space!
Thank you for your support.

I would also like to thank all students and parents for such a brilliant welcome and first Semester at Belridge. Semester 1 reports will be sent home prior to the end of term and you also have the opportunity to speak to your child’s teachers regarding progress and any concerns at the parent teacher interviews on Thursday 30 June. I look forward to seeing you there.
I also hope all students have a fantastic break and look forward to a successful Semester 2.
Semester 2 Timetables
Year 7 & 8 timetables will be updated in Semester 2 with new elective subjects. Students will be provided with a new timetable on the first day back in Semester 2. By the end of Year 8 students will have had the opportunity to try a range of subjects which helps them to decide what subjects they would like to pursue in Year 9.
Year 8 Electives for 2023
In Term 3 students will be given information and a selection sheet to choose electives they would like to study in Year 9. It is important that selections are returned promptly so that students are allocated their choices and timetabling decisions can be made. If you have any questions regarding this process in Term 3 please contact the school.
Year 8 Lightning Carnival
On 15 June the Year 8 cohort attended a Lightning carnival against other schools in a range of sports. Teachers reported that students represented the school with pride, and we came away with some fantastic results. Well done to all students who were involved!
Year 7 Afternoon Tea
Thank you to all the parents who attended the Year 7 afternoon Tea. It was great to meet all of those who attended and hear the positive start students have had this year. Also thank you to all the staff who attended the event. Hopefully next year the Year 7 BBQ can take place!

Year 11 & 12 Semester 2
Semester 2 for year 11 & 12 students commenced on Monday 13 June. Final day for Year 12 students is Friday 14 October (14 week semester), followed by their external ATAR examinations. The Year 11 students finish on Friday 11 November (18 week semester), followed by their school examinations.
Students should reflect on their Semester 1 performance and set goals for Semester 2. This involves critically analysing work and study routines, both at school and home. Assess the use of their Student Planner and importantly having a study schedule. Spending time planning reduces anxiety and gives students confidence that they have a pathway to achieve their goals. We all know the no goal setting and no planning generally achieves no results. These are not only skills and attributes for school but also valuable in life.
University Presentations
Mr Mouritz has organised representatives from the universities to present information sessions to the Year 12 ATAR students. These sessions are been held during lunch and P5 on selected Wednesdays. We hope information presented within these sessions will help guide the students in decisions post Year 12.

No coffee, no workee!
INTRODUCING PRE-SCHOOL PERCS - Staff at Belridge SC were recently treated to a special morning tea, hosted by our Hospitality students using our new portable coffee and catering carts. It's a win, win, with staff being able to order a coffee at the start of the day, and students gaining valuable experience towards their Certificate II in Hospitality. The Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students are also looking forward to using the new carts to cater a variety of events across the school in the near future.

Year 9 AE YW Workshop
The Youth Writers Collective, run by Fremantle Literature Center, ran a Year 9 online workshop on the 1st of June 2022. Kate McAffrey, author of ‘Destroying Avalon’ and ‘Beautiful Monster’, guided discussion and writing activities, as well as giving some great advice about creative writing techniques and even gave tips on how to get published.
Here's what the participating students took away from the experience:
• Aansh – creating conflict and how to construct different plot structures.
• Wycliffe – plot structure and how to begin with action.
• Mia – how to structure your stories and keep them credible.
• Aaron – where to go for inspiration, like what you see in magazines news articles.
• Oliver – learning about voice and how to create authentic voices through point of view, word choice/diction, syntax, imagery, figurative language, punctuation, and dialogue.
"From an ATAR English teacher's perspective, this was a highly engaging and creative way of dipping our students' toes into advanced course concepts and skills. Their new found knowledge is great for their writing skills and they are also transferable to how students comprehend and analyse texts in the future. The work produced by students throughout the day was outstanding and they received quality feedback from Kate that built their confidence." - Miss Holliday.
Thank you to Miss Edmonds (Academic Extension Coordinator) for organising this opportunity for our students.

Year 11 General Geography
Year 11 students of General Geography recently visited some iconic natural and cultural features located in, and on, our Swan River.
First stop was Optus Stadium and Matagarup Bridge. It was here that students observed and recorded the amenities that entice families from all over Perth to use this space, and not just for the stadium. After a short history lesson on the now defunct Burswood Gold Course the students moved to the Matagarup Bridge for a field sketch.
The students bravely endured the intermittent showers and attempted to complete their sketch. Students were also treated to a pod of dolphins feeding underneath the bridge, which was quite the spectacle.
Students then moved to the hospitality hub "On the Point" where they noted the positives, but also the many negatives, that human activity has had, and is having, on the natural ecosystems associated with the river.
Our next stop was a more relaxed, albeit sobering experience on Heirisson Island. A place of natural beauty but also high significance for Whadjuk Noongar people. It was here students learnt of Yagan, the legendary Noongar warrior and visited and paid respect to the statue erected in his honour. Being directly across the river from our previous study area, it provided a great contrast for the students in terms of the significance of the river to different cultures.
The final stop for the day was Elizabeth Quay. It was here students explored the quay area, identifying the various amenities present, or in some cases, still under construction. Students also recorded the various ways in which the quay and surrounding waterfront area is used by the people of Perth, and the unfortunate evidence of physical pollutants and clearly evident poor water quality.
The behaviour of the students on the day was commendable, they were fantastic ambassadors for BSC.

AUTHORITY DEVELOPED WORKPLACE LEARNING (ADWPL)
Year 11 and 12 non ATAR students recently had the opportunity to complete a two week block of Workplace Learning. ADWPL is a valuable Endorsed Program that enables students to develop Employability Skills while investigating possible future career paths. In addition, students gain WACE credit upon attending a minimum of 55 hours in the workplace, documenting this in their ADWPL Logbook and answering ten Skills Journal questions.
Just over forty students took advantage of this opportunity and placements were arranged in a variety of industry areas in line with students’ career aspirations and certificate studies. Feedback from both the participating students and their host employers was extremely positive. The college is grateful to the local businesses and employers that support our students by offering the work placements.

TAFE COURSES – One Day/Week for 2023/2024
Each year TAFE advertises a list of Profile courses for school students to apply for, that are Government funded and generally cover areas of skills shortage. These courses are run at various TAFE campuses one day/week over one or two years.
Year 10 and 11 students can apply to enrol in one of these Profile courses and if successful, attend the course one day/week the following year while still attending school. WACE credit is gained upon completion of the course.
I am currently taking copies of the list of proposed Profile courses on offer, to Year 10 Form classes, to give to interested students. Once students have decided on a course they are interested in, I will provide further detail about specific courses, and how to apply. The online application process opens on July 18, the first Monday of term three. Students will be able to apply directly via the TAFE website. Entry to Profile courses is competitive so students can support their application by providing additional documents such as a Resume, references and certificates of achievement or participation.
Semester One Progress Reports from North Metropolitan TAFE are being distributed this week to current participants in one day/week courses. They are a great indication of the foresight students showed last year, to consider the opportunities on offer this year and apply for a course in line with their interest and possible career path focus. Most of our current NM TAFE students have achieved a very good report for both their participation and achievement.

Year 9 Boys AFL Lightning Carnival
Excitement levels were high the morning of the 2022 Year 9 Lightning Carnival. Held at Seacrest Park in Sorrento, the AFL interschool competition had Belridge pitted against some quality competition in Ashdale, Ocean Reef, Duncraig and Woodvale.
After a rousing speech from our Year 11 coaches, and the surprising captain selection of AFL debutant Braydon Hogan, Round 1 saw Belridge up against Ocean Reef in a tight contest. We were very proud of several boys volunteering to play for Ocean Reef to make up their numbers, some of whom played starring roles and were quickly shifted back in to Belridge colours at halftime. Belridge displayed great teamwork and silky skills to come away with a comfortable victory.
Round 2 against Woodvale was a dominant performance from start to finish. Some flashy goals, including a maiden goal from our fearless captain, and tight defence were the highlights from a fantastic performance across the board.
Round 3 saw us face the toughest competition of the day, in what would be a grand final preview against Duncraig. A very tight back and forth battle saw us run over the top of a very skilful Duncraig outfit.
The final round of regular fixtures had us against the most intimidating side in Ashdale. A few rugby players on their team made it a very physical encounter, but again the skills and teamwork of the Belridge boys reigned supreme in another comfortable win.
The Grand Final saw the rematch against Duncraig in a nail-biting contest that went down to the final minute. Trailing for most of the game, and kicking into a strong wind in the second half, the game was on the line with only seconds to go. After some great team play and quality forward pressure, Belridge slotted a goal with less than a minute on the clock to snatch a victory and go undefeated for the day.
We were very proud of how the boys performed both on and off the field. Their skills and teamwork were fantastic and they represented Belridge flawlessly. Well done to all the players and coaches for a great day.

Year 9 Girls Netball Lightning Carnival
On Tuesday 24th May, the Year 9’s had their annual lightning carnival. There were 30 students that travelled on a bus up to Kingsway to compete in the netball carnival. We had 4 teams representing Belridge. With only 30 students this meant that most teams played with 7 on each team, which allowed no subs! As you can imagine all students were extremely tired by the end of the day after playing 5/6 games with no subs!
Everyone displayed excellent sportsmanship, teamwork, and behaviour to represent our College over the day. There were 4 divisions A, B, C and D. Belridge won the A division and came 2nd in the B division. The other 2 teams had a mix of wins and losses over the day. With smiles evident all throughout the day, even with a heavy downpour of rain for about 5 minutes, I was very proud to be a teacher a Belridge.
A huge thank you to our Year 10 Netball Academy helpers on the day who coached, umpired and helped sort the fixtures out. These students were: Taya Hynes, Lily Allen, Maya Fry, Steph Spence and Maddy Gibbs.
Many thanks also to the other staff members that attended the netball: Mrs Collins, Mrs Hunter and Mr Bennett.

Year 9 Girls Basketball Lightning Carnival
The Year 9 girls had a great day at Basketball.
We had a tough start in game 1 with Duncraig 2 scoring fast. Norah Flaherty played a great offensive game, driving hard at the basket to get us on the board.
In game 2 the girls showed great sportsmanship dropping to four players to match Ocean Reefs numbers. In a low scoring game, Mia Cains jump shot and Holly Everett in defence were highlights.
Tiffany Villarino started the scoring in game 3 with a successful layup. The team played well but were outrun by a strong Duncraig outfit.
Games 4 and 5 saw us take on Woodvale 1 and 2, both strong teams. Camille Harrex and Kacey Worton combined beautifully like they did all day and we achieved our highest scores. Kacey's defence and Camille’s swishing 3 pointer were game highlights.
The girls had a fun day out and played hard and fair and worked well as a team.

Year 9 Boys Basketball Lightning Carnival
Game 1 vs Duncraig 3
Score 26 – 14
Belridge started slowly, as Duncraig scored a couple of easy baskets in transition. The twin towers of Will Parker and Marcus Decan soon began to assert dominance at both ends of the floor. Parker too big and too strong inside, capitalised on his opportunities around the basket as Belridge ran away with a 12 point win.
Game 2 vs Woodvale 2
Score 15 – 21
A scrappy affair to start as both teams tried to play up-tempo. Woodvale scored easily in transition off the back of some poor shot selection and decision making from Belridge. The team steadied as Jackson Oulton looked to take control. Belridge’s teamwork came to the fore front as they turned defence into offense, however Woodvale finishing around the basket proved to be the difference in this one.
Game 3 vs Yanchep
Score 38 – 2
Belridge went to their 2-3 zone early and this proved to be the decider in this game. Yanchep struggled from outside and could not penetrate the defense to create easier opportunities. Belridge flourished in the open court, taking full advantage of the great work from Jett Reiss the twin towers of Marcus Decan and Will Parker. Chad Waters provided a spark in offense as the team took control of this game winning in a canter.
Game 4 vs Duncraig 2
Score 33 – 19
Belridge lead from the opening tip to the final buzzer in this contest. Great team work and passing opened the game up for Liam Carstairs and Mark Tobin to use their speed and ball handling to break down the Duncraig defense. Patrick Oulton had the hot hand from three and Jett Reiss again came up big inside and his versatility to push the ball on the break created easy opportunities for his team mates.
Game 5 – Crossover final
Duncraig 3
Score 28 -16
Belridge came out of the blocks with all guns blazing, quickly jumping to a 8-0 lead. This would prove too much for the opposition to scale back. Lucas Orkney had some great passages of play in transition. Belridge to big and too tough came through and headed for a grand final rematch against Woodvale.
Game 6 – Grand Final
Woodvale 2
Score 12 -24
What had already been the best game of the day so far shaped as a tantalising grand final. Woodvale had taken care of all other teams easily, and Belridge had gone from strength to strength as the gelled over day. A tight tussle ensured early, as both teams struggled on the big stage. For Belridge, we were continued to be given great service from the guards, but some missed opportunities were turned into baskets for Woodvale. In the end, Woodvale prevailed, despite a gallant effort from the boys.
All students represented the values of the school and displayed outstanding sportsmanship and fair play. A huge thanks to our student helpers Kyla Gallagher, Arwen Deans, Alina Moore and Nic Hendry.

With the senior school students at exams, we had a few weeks break from our weekly meetings, but there was still A LOT going on for the Student Council!
On Monday the 13th May, the Year 9 and 10 leaders attended the GRIP conference at the Perth Convention Centre with over 50 other schools. From learning about fundraising to difficult conversations, to resilience and public speaking, our leadership group made the most of every opportunity. It made some of us think about life after school and being lifelong leaders. I am so excited about what is in store for our leaders of tomorrow.
In other ground-breaking news, in conjunction with Ms Collins' Outdoor Education class, containers for change has finally arrived at Belridge. Led by Blake Barisani, our WA student council nominee, the bins arrived this week and once some education around the use of the bins has been finalised, they will roll out next week. We have also collaborated with Belridge Ed Support and are so excited to be working with them on this, and future recycling projects. All funds raised will be donated to the Blue Tree Project, raising awareness and prompting conversations around mental health. It’s ok to not be ok!
Watch this space as next term will bring another fundraising event, a HUGE project we have been working on and a visit to the City of Joondalup Youth Council.
