Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2024 school year. One of my favourite times of the year is welcoming our new Year 7 students into the College as well as welcoming back some familiar faces. After a well-deserved break, both staff and students have returned refreshed ready for the year ahead.
As you can imagine, the first few weeks back can be a challenge for our students. Especially for our new Year 7’s. Adjusting to a new routine, making new friends, and finding their place can be exhausting. However, the Year 7’s seem to be coping well with the transition, settling into their new classes and finding their way around the campus with ease. A change to our transition program saw us trial a new process for Week 1 of this year. Student timetables were suspended during Periods 3-5 and transition activities took place instead; this included ICT inductions, a Library guided tour and team building. Hopefully, all of these things have helped them settle into the College and have a smooth start.
Our departing Year 12 cohort did the College proud achieving some great results in their WACE.
As a College, 94% of students achieved the WACE – higher than like schools and Public schools. We also saw an increase in the percentage of students achieving Certificate III qualifications with 58% of VET enrolled students achieving a Certificate III compared to 42% in 2022. Our strong OLNA results saw 96% of our WACE-eligible cohort achieve the minimum standard in both literacy and numeracy.
Elevate Education Revision Seminars took place for our senior school students, supported with an after-school Seminar for parents. These sessions have focused on getting good study habits in place early and forming a sustainable routine, assisting students in being successful in the future.
I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new staff to the College, Mr Louis Cheeseman – Deputy Principal (backfilling for Mr Pisano), Annemarie Verschoor – L3 HOLA Arts, Adam Smith – L3 Program Coordinator Senior School Pathways and Shannon McNamara – Science Teacher. We also have several support staff joining us Nicole Miller and Craig Walker – Education Assistants, Catherine Byrne – Lab Technician, Michelle Dragicevich - Nurse, Iona Hughes –School Psychologist and Leon Durrant – Chaplain.
This term also sees our annual beach carnival Belsurf event take place. I would like to thank our HPE Team in advance for their efforts in the planning and preparation for such a huge event.
NAPLAN and OLNA are also scheduled this term. Our Year 12 Ball at Frasers in Kings Park is on the horizon. I look forward to seeing our wonderful Year 12 students shine and can't wait to share the event with you in our next newsletter.
A change to our Student Services structure sees the removal of the Year Coordinator roles and the addition of three 2IC Head of Student Services. This hopes to give greater continuity to students and a stronger pastoral care structure.
If you need to reach out and contact the College, please see the Talking With Your College document that can be found on our website to guide your inquiry. Other useful tools include the Parent/Student Handbook and our College Connect page. I also encourage you to follow us on Facebook and Instagram so that we can share our successes and events with you in real time.
School tours and Meet the Teacher sausage sizzle are taking place on Wednesday, 27 March 2024, along with a Enrolment Information Evening for future students wanting to enrol in one of our specialist programs. Please see our website and flyers for further details. Thank you for your ongoing support.

School Board Matters - February 2024
Well, it's been a hot start to the year, so rather than extend my customary warm welcome, it's a refreshing and invigorating one, to both our existing students and to our brand-new ones. If you’re a parent or guardian and ever wondered what the board does, please feel free to contact the Board secretary, Nicky Harris, and we can arrange a chat.
With possible member spaces opening up during the year, now is a great time to consider how your knowledge and experience can benefit the school community.
It's a big year ahead, with so many things happening over the year, so I look forward to meeting some of you along the way.
Steve Hall
Chairperson
Belridge Secondary College Board
With the start of the new academic year upon us, it is a timely reminder to talk with your child and reiterate the basics of crossing the road safely.
- Don’t assume the driver has seen you.
- Look both ways.
- Cross only at designated pedestrian crossings.
- Avoid crossing at the front or back of buses and large vehicles.
- Don’t be distracted by your phone and remove headphones before crossing a road.
- Always look-out before you step out.
- Plan ahead - so you are not rushing to catch the bus.
- For family information sheets, go to sdera.wa.edu.au/parents/secondary-years
Please follow the basic rules of stop, look, listen and think and most importantly stay safe.
Deputy Principal - Years 7, 8 and 9
I wish to welcome all the new students and their parents/caregivers to the Belridge Secondary College community. Also, welcome back all our families that are already part of the Belridge community. I have been impressed by how quickly all students have settled into their new timetables, not letting the hot weather deter them from arriving at school on time each day in the correct uniform. Term 1 this year is only nine weeks, so please make sure you keep up to date with Connect and Compass notifications, as a lot is going on!
Active parent/caregiver involvement is paramount to the educational achievement and success of the student. I look forward to establishing and maintaining strong and productive working relationships with all our new families to help achieve positive and rewarding outcomes for your children.
Year 7 and Year 9 NAPLAN
This year, NAPLAN will run from Wednesday, 13 March 2024 and finish on Monday, 25 March 2024. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carergivers to see how their child is progressing against national standards and over time. Our teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. In school, students will also complete some practice tests, as this is useful to help students prepare, understand and be comfortable with the format of the tests. You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is a part of their school program and reminding them to simply do their best.
NAPLAN supports inclusive testing, so all students have the opportunity to participate. Adjustments are available for students with disability. If you would like to discuss adjustments further, please contact Rebecca Edmonds, our Inclusive Education Coordinator.
More information and practice tests can be found at: https://www.nap.edu.au/home
Year 7 Induction Program
This year we introduced a Year 7 Induction Program that spanned across three days. Students took part in a Library induction, study skills session, team building, photographs, literacy and numeracy testing and an ICT induction. The program wrapped up with the first Year 7 assembly of the year, where students completed the Belridge quiz to see how much they had already learnt about our school community.
Feedback from staff and students was very positive and we hope that it has enabled students to transition seamlessly into high school reducing anxiety and ironing out any potential ICT queries in the first few weeks.
Y7 BBQ / Progress Reports
On Wednesday, 27 March 2024 from 3:30-6:30pm, Year 7 parents will have the opportunity to attend a Welcome BBQ with school staff and meet with your child's teachers regarding how your child has settled into each subject. I would encourage you to take this opportunity to have a face to face meeting with staff from the school who will support your child's academic and pastoral journey throughout their time at Belridge Secondary College.
Details on how to book your parent/interviews appointments will be sent out soon.
Year 7 Immunisations
For those who would like to have their Year 7 student immunisations at school for HPV. Immunisations will be held on Monday, 22 April 2024 during the school day.
Louise Hall
Deputy Principal
Years 7, 8 and 9
Deputy Principal - Years 10, 11 and 12
I would like to welcome all the new students and their parents/caregivers to the Belridge Secondary College community. I would also like to welcome the Year 11 students to the start of their two-year WACE journey. My focus is to build and strengthen the work ethic of all students and prepare them for adult life.
Active parent/caregiver involvement is paramount to the educational achievement and success of the student. I look forward to establishing and maintaining strong and productive working relationships with all our Senior School families to help achieve positive and rewarding outcomes for their children.
Thank you to those families of Year 11 ATAR students who were able to make it to the Parent Information evening in Week 4. Please see below a summary of the PowerPoint presented on the night.
Summary PPT of Parent Information Evening
Student Course Changes
Course changes for Senior School students have now been finalised, any further changes will only be considered under exceptional circumstances. Late changes place the student at risk of not meeting course requirements and undue pressure on the teacher to try and get the student up to speed with the course.
Year 9 and 10 elective changes are also finalised. Students should be settled in their selected electives.
Year 11 and 12 ATAR
Students on an ATAR pathway are required to attend the ATAR study period every Wednesday Lunch & part of Period 5. Mrs Hall monitors the Year 11 ATAR students and I monitor the Year 12 ATAR students.
The Year 11 students have enjoyed two presentations (Study Sensei and Time Management) from Elevate Education. These presentations are designed to allow students to self-assess where they are at and how to plan positive changes to improve their study culture. The presenters are young successful university students who have left the schooling system a few years previously. A parent session also took place during Week 4. A key website to support students in making career decisions was outlined and can be found at myfuture.com.au
To assist the Year 12 ATAR students in selecting university courses for 2025, guest speakers from all the tertiary institutions are also invited into the college. The speakers cover everything from minimum ATAR required, courses available, early offers and university life.
Senior School Engagement Program (SSEP)
To help develop skills and awareness, students who are not in an ATAR pathway and not participating in Workplace Learning are required to attend sessions every second Wednesday. This is advertised in the notices and promoted in Form.
Finally, I would like to thank the staff, students and families for making me feel so welcome. I look forward to working with you throughout this year.

Planner Use
Students have been actively completing Wellbeing activities in their student planners, topics have included Respectful Relationships, Engagement and Mindfulness, Gratitude and Goal Setting. Students who have been completing the activities have been rewarded with icy poles which has been a nice treat on these hot days!
Curiosity; the desire to learn, the confidence to explore, the tools to grow.
During our Year Assemblies in Week 4, students explored and discussed the idea of curiosity, one of the College values. Staff and students are encouraged to be curious about learning, ask questions, expand outside their comfort zones, explore new things and develop new skills.
Year 7 and 8
What a start to the year! We welcomed in 170 new Year 7 students on the first day. There were some nerves and smiles as they began their high school career. The first few days saw the Year 7's rotate through a range of activities including Library, Study and Computer information and some team building fun. They have had a positive start to the year and are settling in well.
The Year 8's have had a great start too, back into the routines and learning new content. We have handed out information and are getting excited about the C8 camp, which is occurring next term, a lot of planning is taking place and it is set to be a wonderful experience.
During their assembly, a number of students were recognised for their high academic success in Semester Two, 2023, being awarded Honour Certificates. Congratulations to those students.
Year 9 and 10
Students have had a very positive start to the year with many students already being acknowledged for their efforts with the Positive Incentive Points and receiving small incentives. During our assemblies, we celebrated the efforts of those students who achieved academic excellence in Semester Two, 2023 and encouraged everyone to strive for their best. Year 9 and 10 are some very important years, with NAPLAN and OLNA taking place as well as many opportunities for Career’s Tasters and Try a Trades etc. It is a time where we ask students to begin to be curious about their futures and what they would like to achieve.
Miss Currie has also set the Year 9 and 10 cohorts a goal of improving their overall cohort attendance ready for the next assembly. So, let’s see if we can get there!
Year 11 and 12
Year 11 and 12 students have hit the ground running, working hard in class and sitting their first round of assessments. With no time to waste in these crucial years, every class is important and every opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding contributes to their WACE attainment. ATAR revision sessions, OLNA support sessions, and the Senior School Enrichment Program are running every Wednesday Period 5 - a must for all students.
Our honour students from last year were recognised this week during the joint Year 11 & 12 Assembly that took place on Monday, 19 February. These students deserve to be celebrated due to the commitment to upholding the schools' values and working to the best of their ability during classes. We look forward to celebrating more successes as they occur throughout the year.
House Competitions
House Form Quiz
The Interhouse competitions have begun for the year, we created some friendly competition between the Houses by kicking off the year with a House Quiz. Form classes participated in the quiz with questions on popular culture, sport, maths, science as well as word jumbles and school trivia. The Form classes with the fastest response time and the most correct answers won points for their House and prizes for themselves. Congratulations to:

Year 12 Integrated Science
On Wednesday, 14 February 2024, the Year 12 Integrated Science students travelled to Neil Hawkins Park on an excursion to investigate the water quality and macroinvertebrate life of Lake Joondalup. Throughout the day, we conducted various exciting tasks, including conducting a site survey of the area and completing water quality tests. Some students even braved the muddy shores and got their hands dirty whilst searching for macroinvertebrate life in water samples from the lake.
We had the opportunity to work with Mariah, a skilled volunteer in the ecology field thanks to the ‘Nearer to Nature’ organisation, who specialise in delivering environmental based educational programs, which focus on conserving WA’s unique biodiversity.
Overall, the day was a success with students braving the heat, and many earning real world experience in the ecology field. To add to the experience, we even sighted some long-neck turtles in the lake!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Archaeology
On Wednesday afternoon, students from HASS 7.2 became cookie archaeologists as they completed a “dig” of chocolate chip cookies. Students were given a sheet of paper with two grids containing a section for artefacts (chocolate chips) and a section for sediment (cookie crumble). Students had to plot on the grid where they found the chocolate chips and excavate the artefacts (chocolate chips) delicately with a toothpick, trying not to break the any. A few cookies crumbled, but in the end all the chocolate chips and cookies were eaten.
Cookie archaeology allows students to discover how an archaeological dig is conducted, with archaeologists sometimes having to remove delicate artefacts from the ground, where they may have been hidden for centuries. Plotting the information on a grid allows archaeologists to keep a record of where artefacts are found during the dig. These records, as well as different scientific techniques used to date artefacts, can be used to uncover mysteries about people who lived in the past.

Vocational and Education Training (VET) News
Term 1 has seen a very positive start across the various VET opportunities that we offer here at the College. In addition to the six Certificate Programs we deliver on site, we also have over 40 students completing numerous qualifications at our partner Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) through the VET Delivered in Secondary Schools (VETDSS) Program. This includes carpentry, music-based programs, electronics, screen and media, health related courses and many others.
Our most recent addition is the Certificate IV in School Based Education Support. A group of Year 11 students have enrolled in this qualification as part of their senior school studies and completion of this course, which has been fully funded, can create immediate employment opportunities and gives students direct university entry options.
Well done to all students who have made a positive and proactive commitment to their respective Certificate qualifications and thank you to all the trainers and teachers who continue to support and develop our learners.

Program Coordinator – Senior School Pathways
Year 9 ‘Construction Futures Centre’
Career Taster
The first Year 9 career taster for the year took place on Friday, 23 February (Week 4), involving 29 students interested in finding out more about career opportunities in the construction industry. Career Practitioner, Mr Mouritz and Senior School Pathways Coordinator, Mr Smith escorted students to the Construction Training Fund’s purpose-built Construction Futures Centre (CFC). The Construction Futures Centre, which is funded by the state government and is designed to educate and encourage students to learn about the diverse construction career options through immersive experiences. Excitingly, Belridge students were the first in the state to visit the recently improved facility this year.
During the excursion students participated in a range of hands-on activities at the recently renovated centre. Students had the opportunity to explore construction-based opportunities in the commercial, residential, mining, and civil sectors. The construction industry is very diverse, and students explored a range of trade based, professional and para-professional opportunities that they can pursue on completion of their studies. Students also received information about the importance of exploring and planning their career pathway journeys by being involved in future College based events, such as specific construction and trade-based career tasters, applying for Vocational Education delivered to Secondary School Students (VETDSS) TAFE certificates for Years 10 to 12; as well as participating in construction safety training (White Card), Try-a-Trade programs and Workplace Learning once they are in Years 11 and 12. At the end of the day students were praised by CFC and Belridge staff for the impressive way they conducted themselves during the event. The career taster opened students’ eyes to the many trade-based pathways they can follow once they complete their studies at the College. Attendees are now encouraged to continue exploring their career pathway options and to begin making career development-based decisions.
This career taster was the first of many career-based excursions and incursions that have been planned for the year. A maximum of 40 Year 9 female students have the opportunity of participating in a ‘girls only’ version of this event next term. Potential careers taster attendees are requested to regularly visit the ‘Year 9 Career Taster Program’ Connect community so that they can receive news and updates of future career taster opportunities.
Mr Ashley Mouritz - Career Practitioner; and
Mr Adam Smith - Senior Schools Pathway Coordinator

Year 9 AEP - ECU CREATE
On Friday, 23 February 2024, 32 Year 9 AEP Science students travelled to ECU, Joondalup to participate in the ECU CREATE program.
CREATE is a “hands-on” experience offered by the School of Engineering at ECU, specifically designed to introduce engineering and technology products and processes to young secondary school students who might be contemplating upper school subject choices in STEM.
Students had a short Q&A presentation from an ECU “Future” student, discussing the types of engineering available at ECU, the world class facilities, student clubs and the multiple pathways into the School of Engineering.
We split into two groups, completing two activities. The first, Engineering Mechanics, was based around the fundamentals of designing a truss bridge, and the tension and compression forces in components of the bridge. Students tested their designs through trial and error, making modifications and changes to produce the most cost effective design. Two students managed to meet the cheapest and most efficient design produced.
The second activity, Automation, was the process of using physical machines, computer software and other technologies to perform tasks usually done by humans. Students developed control systems for operating a mechanical arm. Different tasks with different requirements challenged the students and enhanced their understanding of critical thinking skills.
Mrs Claire Green and Mr Benjamin French
HASS Teacher and Mathematics Teacher
