With Term 4 well under way, there has been lots to celebrate at the College. Our Year 12’s final days were celebrated in style starting with an amazing family breakfast. The event was well attended by parents and staff, all taking the opportunity to say goodbye to a fantastic cohort. The event was catered for by our Home Economics team and Hospitality students, who did an amazing job preparing delicious food. This was followed by our Year 12 assembly. The event was a wonderful celebration, with such kind and hopeful words spoken by our staff and Student Councillors. It was a real pleasure to be a part of such a lovely assembly and provide a final farewell for our graduating students.
Our formal Graduation ceremony took place on Thusday, 26 October at Kingsway Christian College Auditorium. Again, what an amazing night. It was great to celebrate the achievements of all students at Belridge Secondary College and Belridge Secondary College Education Support.
For the second year running the College hosted the CO2 Dragster Competition. Schools from all over the state entered the competition with finalists attending the judging at the College. A big thanks to Mr Chen and his team for their efforts with the competition.
This term, we held our Year 6 half-day Transition Program consisting of students from nine local intake primary schools. The days have been a great success, with lots of happy faces seen around the school as they prepare for their move to the College. Thank you to Miss Hall and Miss Edmonds for their efforts with the program.
On Wednesday, 25 October the College was lucky enough to have a visit from former Belridge Secondary College student and our very own Wild Cat, David Okwera! David was also accompanied by MVP Bryce Cotton, who whipped up a storm with his presence in the school gymnasium. Students from both Belridge Secondary College and Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre took part in this special session. The students were absolutely thrilled (and so were a few staff) to have them here. Thank you to Mr O’Neil for organising this special opportunity.
The College was also thrilled to be a part of this year’s Telethon event. Students from our specialist program – Belridge Dance Company - performed their award-winning number “Move your Body” early Sunday morning to a live TV audience. Thank you to Miss Robinson and Miss Hall for supporting the students attending this event.
On Monday, 6 November we held our AEP Showcase. The event had a great turn out from our parents. Students presented to our special judges Joshua Guy from Scitech (Secondary STEM Coordinator) and Dr Ale Rassau from ECU (Lecturer in Engineering Ethics & Innovation), as well as some staff judges. Our highest placed teams were across Years 7-9 with projects covering electric cars, wave energy and robotics. Winners will be announced during Week 10 assemblies.
The AEP Showcase was followed by our open board meeting. During this session, attendees were treated to some delicious food from our Hospitality team and students. The College presented on a number of topics including feedback from our Public School Review, progress with our Teaching and Learning Framework, including our commitment to Berry Street, details of our future STEM build and a comprehensive look at student pathway planning. Our Year 10 students shared their plans for the future via a video that was played for the guests. They spoke about their future subject selections and the opportunities the College had provided them to engage in career exploration. A big thanks to Mr Mouritz and our Senior School team for their work with our students in this area and to Ms Hunt and Ms Currie for making the video.
We then heard from one of our past students, Joel Hall, who told his story on how Belridge Secondary College had positively impacted his life and guided him on his educational journey. A true inspiration, thank you Joel. Our Student Council shared how they are moving forward with Student Voice and detailed their roles as leaders in the College. It was a great evening. Thank you to all who attended, in particular to our wonderful Board members for their continued support. As usual, our Board minutes can be viewed on our website.
On Wednesday, 8 November The Arts team presented their Arts Showcase to the Belridge community. The event was a huge success with over 180 people in attendance! Where do I start? The artwork, the sculptures, the bags, the vinyl covers, the sunflowers, the dance routine, the costumes, the vocal performances, the choir, the musical pieces from our talented pianist - In Jung, guitar ensemble and the fashion show, AMAZING!!! Thank you to the Arts staff for their efforts creating this show and to the staff that helped out backstage and attended on the night to support the event.
This term we also celebrated World Teachers’ Day, with some yummy cupcakes and some heart felt notes to our staff from students expressing their thanks. We have also held camps in Cricket and Outdoor Education with a few more to come, as well as our Netball camp.
Our commitment to supporting the community was recognised by Mr Chen who nominated the school for supporting his work as a SES volunteer. Mr Chen and I attended a formal ceremony in the city in which the school was presented with a Volunteer Employer Recognition Award (VERA) for supporting volunteers and the important work they do in the community.
To finish, I would just like to remind the community that we will be running our Christmas Hamper Appeal again this term. Last year we were able to provide over 25 hampers to local families in need. I know this made a huge difference to our families, as well as providing our students with the opportunity to help others. Please see our flyer and social media posts for key dates (closing date Friday 8 December). Please give what you can and support local during this festive season.

Transition for Year 6 students
During weeks 4 and 5, I enjoyed welcoming all our enrolled new Year 7 students for 2024. Each partner primary school students and out of area students attended the College for a half day transition. During the morning students took part in games, testing, a tour and an Amazing Race! Over 30 of our Year 9 Peer Support Leaders supported the transition and will also be familiar faces to welcome the current Year 6 students to the Orientation Day on Tuesday, 5 December and into Year 7 at the start of next year.
Enrolments for 2024
A final reminder that if you have a child in Year 6 at a local partner primary school, please complete their enrolment at the college to enable them to attend the Orientation Day on Tuesday, 5 December and Belridge Secondary College in 2024.
AEP showcase
It was a pleasure to attend the Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) showcase on Monday, 6 November. Mrs Claire Green and numerous AEP staff supported the Year 7-9 AEP students in researching and completing their projects based on sustainability. The students' imagination and projects were fantastic and a testament to the excellent teaching and learning that occurs in classrooms across the college every day.
2024 Timetable
We are currently finalising timetables and classes for students in 2024. If you have a specific, educational reason for your child to be placed in a specific class, please email the college as soon as possible.
Planner Wellbeing Focus
We have nearly completed a year of the Wellbeing Planner Weekly Focus. The purpose of the planners, emails and activities is to support students and teachers in cultivating a resilient state of wellbeing which enables students’ personal and academic growth. As a college, we strive to instil healthy wellbeing in all students where they feel optimistic and hopeful for today and for their futures because they know that they are working towards becoming their best thriving selves.
Research shows that students who participate in rigorously designed social and emotional learning programs demonstrate more positive social behaviour, are less likely to engage in risky and disruptive behaviour and show improved academic outcomes. Please discuss the planner focus each week with your child to further support their wellbeing at home.

Term 4 is always an exciting and busy time of the year. It signifies a time of change with the farewelling of the Year 12 students and the introduction and transition of the Year 7 (2024) students.
Year 12
The term started with the Year 12 Farewell breakfast in the Café followed by the final Year 12 assembly, attended by the Year 10 and 11 students and parents of graduating students. This was followed with the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony held at Kingsway Christian College which was well received by invited family and guests. This was a fitting occasion to highlight the “Two Schools, One Community” that Belridge is. I received many positive comments from the invited dignitaries about the vibe in the room on the night. Many of these dignitaries attend numerous graduation ceremonies and are moved by the connectedness within the two schools. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the end of one journey and the commencement of another.
Year 11
Year 11 students are completing their final week of formal lessons. ATAR students will commence their Semester 2 examinations on Monday, 13 November, the examinations are scheduled for 7 days. Students have received their personalised examination timetable.
Absence from an examination will need to be supported with a medical certificate (as per SCSA guidelines) and the school to be notified of the absence the morning of the examination. |
Students have now selected their 2024 Year 12 subjects. Should a change be required please contact the school as soon as possible to discuss options, the later you leave this the less likely a change is possible. I urge all students to review their 2023 performance and to determine if they are well placed to achieve their WACE.
Year 11 reports will be emailed to parents/caregivers on Tuesday, 5 December.
Years 7 – 10
The 2024 timetable is complete, and students have been placed into courses for 2024. Year 8 (Year 9, 2024) and Year 9 (Year 10, 2024) submitted their elective preferences and I was able to place most students into their preferred electives. Year 7 and 8 (2024) students are rotated through the different electives to get a taste of all electives on offer at the College.
Semester 2 reports will be emailed to parents/caregivers on Tuesday, 12 December. Please review these reports and book a teacher consultation, if required. I hope Semester 2 reports reflect the fantastic work all students have produced and the progress they have made.

Fashion Design - Spring into Success!
Congratulations to Year 9 student, Emma Lanchbury, who entered into the inaugural SPRING HARVEST FESTIVAL in September in two categories
(a) Best Small Item; and
(b) Wearable Art.
Emma placed 1st with her Small Item, which was a patchwork bucket hat with bias trim and 2nd in the Wearable Art category – of which all the flowers were hand crocheted. Emma was awarded two Spotlight vouchers as her prize, which we are sure she will spend wisely on upcoming Fashion Design projects. We can’t wait to see what Fashion Design students create for next year’s event. Congratulations Emma!

Yanchep Cultural Day 2023
Follow the Dream students at Belridge Secondary College had an amazing day out at the Yanchep National Park, celebrating their culture, meeting fellow students from other schools and having the wonderful opportunity to meet Aboriginal Elder Dr Noel Nannup. The event was very well organised by Tina Purdew-Deegan, who co-ordinated numerous activities for the students which included:
- Didgeridoo playing
- Women's traditional dance
- Dot painting
- Spear-throwing and hunting techniques
- Dreamtime stories and nature walks
A special mention to Howie Eades (Year 12), who made a heartwarming speech in tribute to Dr Noel Nannup. Along with fellow student Neville Rundle (Year 12), they both showed exemplary leadership skills among their peers and took the initiative to get the lower school students participating and having a great time. Follow the Dream is a fantastic program designed to build cultural identity, academic outcomes and unite indigenous students across schools in Perth.

CO2 Dragster Competition 2023
WA State Round
On Friday, 15 September, Belridge Secondary College had the privilege of hosting the 2023 CO2 Dragster Competition – WA State round in the school gym. This is the second year we have had this opportunity and it proved to be an exciting event, allowing students to see their creations race down a 20M track at high speeds.
This year saw entries from all education sectors, Private, Catholic and State schools competing for the opportunity to compete in the National Competition that will be held in October. Belridge Secondary College and Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre were represented by students from Mr Brinkworth’s Education Support class and Year 9 Mechatronics class, with a total of 16 entries, as well as 2 entries for the Teacher category. While none of our dragsters won on the day, of the 18 entries, 7 students’ dragsters and both the teacher dragsters will compete in the National Competition with the chance to bring back the trophy to match the trophy won by Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre in 2022.
Thank you to staff and students who helped out on the day to ensure the event was smooth and successful. Thank you to the Physical Education Department for allowing us to take over the gym for the day. Also, thanks to Peter Pooley, Event Coordinator and the judges who volunteered their time to judge the entries.

Year 11 Outdoor Education Camp - Moore River
In just two weeks, we experienced two completely different camps. The first camp had us sweating in 40 degree heat, while the second camp chilled us to the bone with its relentless wind. But despite the weather extremes, we had an absolute blast!
Our fishing adventures were a huge success. We caught several fish from the shallow sand bank, providing a refreshing break from the heat. And in the creek, we had a few nibbles before finally reeling in the fish of the day. It was a triumph!
But fishing wasn't the only activity that got our adrenaline pumping, we also put our canoeing skills to the test as we navigated the Moore River. Our destination? An epic sand dune that awaited us at the end. With bravery in our hearts, we flew down the dune, some of us even crossing a third of the river at the bottom. It was a thrilling activity that left us all feeling accomplished.
And let's not forget the fun we had on the pontoon in the river, it provided endless entertainment as we splashed around and enjoyed the water. It was the perfect way to end an action-packed day.
On day two, we headed to Back Beach Lancelin, where we were greeted by the Green Room. The students showed off their impressive surfing skills, riding the waves with confidence and grace. It was a sight to behold. After all the excitement, we rewarded ourselves with a delicious pie from the local bakery. It was the perfect way to refuel and reflect on the incredible experiences we had.
Of course, no camp is complete without a few unexpected twists, with the trip back home from the first camp taking longer than we anticipated. But despite the delay, everyone remained in high spirits. It was a testament to the great camp we had and the amazing memories we created together.
Well done to everyone who participated, it truly was a fantastic camp that will be remembered for years to come.

Exploring Careers - Year 9
Gaming Career Taster
On Wednesday, 6 September, twelve Year 9 students were involved in a Game Design career taster, held at North Metropolitan TAFE’s Northbridge campus. Students and the College’s Career Practitioner, Mr Mouritz, travelled by bus for the excursion, which formed part of the Year 9 Career Taster Program. Attendance was based on an expression of interest basis, with numerous students unfortunately missing out on the event, due to a lot of interest in the gaming field. All attendees were excited to attend TAFE for the day and have the opportunity of being in an adult learning environment.
On arrival, students were Welcomed to Country in one of the large lecture theatres. This was the first time many students had sat in a functional lecture theatre. Once the day’s itinerary was explained, students were introduced to their lecturer for the day, Andy, who teaches Certificates III and IV in Screen and Media: Animation and Game Art. Attendees were excited to hear that they would be spending the day designing their own computer game graphics. During the day, students spent time learning how to code and embed graphics into their own versions of Space Invaders. Most students did a great job following instructions and creating their own unique characters, graphics and movements. The day opened student’s eyes to what it would be like to pursue a career in game design, as well as what an adult learning environment is like.

Lab Rats - Edith Cowan University
On Friday, 3 November, twenty six of our brightest Year 9 students attended Edith Cowan University’s (ECU) annual Lab Rats events, held at the Joondalup campus. The excursion involved students from the Year 9 Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) being exposed to what life would be like completing an undergraduate Science degree at university. During the day students had the opportunity to complete experiments in ECU’s ‘Super Lab’, discover the importance of cyber security protocols, program the School of Engineering’ robots, tour the enormous campus, and receive information regarding pathways and course options for university study at ECU in 2027 and beyond. The College’s Career Practitioner, Ashley Mouritz and Year 9 AEP Science teacher, Glenn Logan, were involved in the planning and supervising the excursion.
After a short introduction and induction, students participated in the ‘Great Race’, a 30-minute trek across the campus that required groups of students locating and noting various physical landmarks from across the campus. Each group admirably completed this task independently, with the assistance of a campus map. All students made it back to the checkpoint in time for their scheduled workshops for the day. The winning team was awarded a bag of ECU goodies, which went down well!
After the tour of the campus, students were split in to two groups with the purpose of simulating the smaller workshops that take place at university, compared to high school. The groups then completed three separate workshops in rotation: a Soil and Invertebrate workshop, a Robotics workshop, and a Cybersecurity workshop. Highlights of the day included students being exposed to working in state-of-the-art facilities and getting to demonstrate their information technology and engineering prowess by programming a robot to move objects.
At the conclusion of the day, students were informed of the many different student options available to them at ECU, on completion of their secondary studies. ECU staff commented on the impressive level of engagement and respect demonstrated by our students. Hopefully involvement in the event assisted students to become more aware of the many study and career options they have once they are ready to transit to tertiary education.

‘Belt Splicing’ Career Taster
On Friday, 22 September a group of Year 9 students attended North Metropolitan TAFE’s Midland campus for a Belt Splicing career taster. ‘What is Belt Splicing?’ was the question that was asked by students prior to the excursion. Belt splicing is an important and extremely lucrative career that involves conveyor belt maintenance, repair and installation. It is an essential role in the mining, manufacturing, and transport industries. There are currently 100's of job opportunities available across the state, due to the shortage of skilled and experienced workers. Historically, belt splicing has been learnt on the job and there has not been a qualification attached to the role, however, due to the wide scale industry skills shortage and technical components of the job, belt splicing has recently been professionalized. This means that employment in the industry now involves completion of an apprenticeship, which includes on the job training, in combination with theory and practical assessments at a training organisation, such as North Metropolitan TAFE.
During the day students participated in a range of hands-on activities at the recently constructed and purpose-built Belt Splicing training shed. Students benefitted from the instruction of their lecturer for the day, Marius, who delivers Certificate III in Polymer Processing, the qualification that required to complete the 3-to-4-year apprenticeship. Students learnt about the importance of safety in the industry, the tools and equipment used in the workplace, and they even had the opportunity to perform simulated maintenance on a functional conveyor belt system. Lecturer, Marius, shared his 25 years of industry insights and explained to students the importance and lucrative nature of the work performed by ‘belties’. He explained that the necessity and shortage of staff across the mining, manufacturing and transport industries has led to employees in the role earning between $120,000 and $250,000 a year! This information was well received by Belridge students in attendance, many of whom have decided to gain a trade qualification on completion of their secondary studies.
Attendees also benefitted from a comprehensive tour of many of the facilities and different workshops at the site. Students were able to view and speak with TAFE staff from a range of different trades that deliver training at the Midland campus, including fitting and machining, metal work, automotive, carpentry and graphic design. Students were enlightened by the tour, as it made them aware of the certificates, pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship training that are delivered at the Midland campus. During the afternoon session students were filmed and photographed by TAFE’s media team, with a video on North Metropolitan TAFE’s website showing the students engaged in the Belt Splicing activities. At the end of the day students were praised by Marius, the lecturer and Career Practitioner, Mr Mouritz, for the impressive way they all conducted themselves during the event. The career taster opened student’s eyes to the many trade-based pathways they can follow once they complete their studies at Belridge Secondary College.

Perth Wildcats Coaching Clinic
A number of our keen basketball players from Belridge Secondary College and Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre got a special treat on Wednesday, 25 October when they were visited by two players from the Perth Wildcats. Students made their way to the gym where Belridge Secondary College teacher Mr Brinkworth (a former State Basketball League player and coach) ensured they were warmed up and ready before Mr O’Neil arrived with the special guests.
New addition to the Wildcats line-up - AND FORMER BELRIDGE SECONDARY COLLEGE STUDENT - David Okwera was joined by 3 x NBL League MVP Bryce Cotton as they guided the students through some basketball drills and fun activities. Toward the end of the session the visiting players spent time signing autographs and taking photos with the keen Wildcats fans.
Thank you to the players and to the Perth Wildcats for providing our students with such a fantastic opportunity

Athletics Carnival 2023
The Athletics Carnival took place on Thursday, 19 October 2023 at the WA Athletics Stadium. Overall, Belridge Secondary College was ahead most of the day but unfortunately was pipped by the smallest of margins, however, we will go up to C Grade for next year.
Belridge Secondary College placed 3rd overall and was the recipient of the Meritorious School Award. A special mention to Sophie Williams (Year 9) our athletics star who won Champion Girl again for her age group.
Students represented our school with pride and were very well behaved. Thank you especially to Tarryn Hunt and Conor Moldrich for their work with students on the day and prior to in the run-up to this event.
Congratulations to all on a fantastic effort.

I attend training (try to!) every Wednesday evening and attend callouts to respond to emergency situations as needed, this includes storm damage callouts, fire support during big fire incidents and searching for missing people when the police requests support from the SES.
WHAT MADE YOU DO IT?
I have lots of knowledge and skills built over the years, through my work as a Design & Technology Teacher and from my time in the Singapore Army through National Service. I didn’t want my knowledge and skills to go to waste and was looking for an opportunity to use the skills I had. I was told about the SES from a friend and thought I’d explore this option. Almost 9 years later, I am still in the SES and find the work highly fulfilling!
ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE?
I am the Deputy Team Leader of my team at WJSES and also the current Team Leader of the Bicycle Team. I assist in supporting my Team Leader and Team to fulfill our duties, ensuring the well-being and safety aspects of our duties are met. I conduct annual Bike Training courses to ensure that we have a regular supply of qualified members for the Bicycle Team to support the search of Missing People, which is the primary role of the Bicycle Team. I also assist in training new SES Team Members when they first join the SES.

Belridge Secondary College wishes to extend a big thank you to Bill and Darrin Smith from Back to the Roots who came out recently to provide a quotation to make good our Blue Tree Project (located along Ocean Reef Road). Bill and Darrin quickly realised it was for mental health awareness and did the job for free! This was at least a $200 job, including a call out fee, so we are very grateful to Back to the Roots (0422 560 650) for their generousity and support.
