As expected, it has been a very busy start to Term 3. With major events on the calendar most weeks - there is always something to celebrate.
At the end of last term, the College went through its external Public School Review. As part of this process, the College had to demonstrate its capabilities across a range of domains. This included Leadership, Learning Environment, Teaching & Learning, Resourcing, Relationships and Student Achievement. I am pleased to say that the College received a fantastic report with many commendations across the domains. The full report is available on schools online and our website. The report is testament to the hard work and dedication that goes on every day in making Belridge Secondary College the fantastic school it is. Although it has been a difficult 3 years we have made steady progress and overcome the many challenges we have faced. As the leader of this amazing school, I am confident that we will keep moving forward, putting our students first and ensuring we are providing the best possible education for each and every student.
During Week 5, Belridge Secondary College celebrated National Science Week. Ms Howard and Mr Crosbie put on a fantastic array of activities for our students involving a Lego Masters Challenge, aeroplane competition, Robot Wars incursion and slime competition. On Friday, 18 August the College invited our JLC Primary Schools to compete in our Science Challenge finals. On the day over 20 teams represented their schools in battling it out for the top prize. Due to the high quality of students' entries, the judging was very tough and picking winners was very difficult. The top spot is still being calculated, but it is going to be a close battle between Edgewater PS and Joondalup PS for the winning shield.
This term we have also held our Year 7 Lightning Carnival and took part in the State Netball Finals. The College is delighted to announce that our Year 12 boys team came away with the State Champion title! Big congratulations to all involved and Ms Markovic and Ms Hunt for all their efforts with our Specialist Netball Program. Our Year 7 Cricket students also took part in the annual Year 7 Cricket camp, big thanks to Mr Ogilvie for organising the event.
There are also a range of whole school activities and special 'weeks' on the horizon this term. We still have Book Week, Wear-It-Purple Day, Athletics Carnival, Numeracy Week, R U OK day, concert nights, and the Year 11 River Cruise to look forward to.
Finally, the College would like to welcome and introduce our new staff who commenced with us this term Jade Cleggett - English Teacher and Ryan Lewis - Mathematics Teacher. We hope you enjoy your time here and are able to contribute to our achievements.
I look forward to sharing the rest of this bumper term with you via our social media pages; Facebook and Instagram.
Sharon Lyon
Principal
Members of the College Board, parents, partner primary school Principals, BSESC Principal Jenine Wall and members of our wonderful teaching teams all had the opportunity recently to espouse the great work that our Principal, Sharon, and the team at Belridge Secondary College does, as we were interviewed as part of the Public School Review audit. As an independent school, Belridge Secondary College is required to meet numerous targets and demonstrate that we are meeting the needs of the community. I am so proud to say that the audit team, made of very senior Department of Education officials, found Belridge Secondary College not only to have met all our targets, but commended us on a number of achievements. So thank you to Sharon for all your hard work, not just in putting together a benchmark submission to the audit team, but also the commitment in keeping Belridge Secondary College compliant.
As we have now rounded the corner and are heading towards year end, the Board begins to focus on next year and some of the strategies to promote our school in the community. With new parent and teacher reps on the Board, it’s exciting to bring some fresh ideas into the planning space. I also look forward to seeing a number of you at the events planned throughout the final two terms, including our open board meeting scheduled for Monday 6 November - all welcome!

Deputy Principal - Middle School
Welcome back to Semester 2. I hope you had a wonderful break with your child/ren and enjoyed making memories with them.
After reading many of the Year 7-9 Semester 1 reports I would like to acknowledge the hard work demonstrated by students. The commitment to both academic and personal growth is commendable. I would encourage you to talk to your child to build upon these successes and learn from the challenges they faced. A growth mindset and realistic goals will empower them to have a successful Semester 2.
It was great to see so many parents take up the opportunity to talk to their child's teachers at the parent-teacher evening in Week 1. Our staff are always happy to provide updates on your child's progress and send out task mark reports following assessments. It is important that you review these at home and encourage your child to become an independent learner, develop effective study skills and seek help from their teacher when needed.
NAPLAN Results
All Year 7 and 9 students' NAPLAN results were posted home to parents in Week 1. NAPLAN results provide important information about literacy and numeracy skills that your child is learning through their school curriculum. The results complement other assessments your child does at school, providing you and your child’s teachers with an understanding of your child’s achievements at the time of the tests. From 2023, new standards were introduced to NAPLAN reporting which are:
- Exceeding
- Strong
- Developing
- Needs Additional Support
This reporting replaces the previous numerical NAPLAN reporting bands and national minimum standards. If you have any questions about your child's results, please contact the school.
2024 Year 7 Enrolments
I have spent the start of Term 3 visiting all our partner primary schools to talk to Year 6 students about the transition to high school and answer any questions they have. It was great to see the excitement they have to begin their journey at Belridge Secondary College in 2024 and we look forward to welcoming them.
If you currently have a child in Year 6, in our intake area, and would like them to attend Belridge Secondary College next year, please complete and submit an enrolment form at our reception as soon as possible. Either collect one from one of our partner primary schools or at our reception.
Year 9 and Year 10 Electives on SSO
This is a reminder to Year 8 and Year 9 students to make subject selections for next year (2024) using the SSO portal. Subjects must be selected and signed Selection Reports handed into Administration by Friday, 18 August.

Year 12
The Year 12s are reaching the final few weeks of their high school education, it is an important time for all Year 12 students to make sure they get the best result from their 12 years of schooling. Students undertaking ATAR courses should be busy preparing for both their mock and final WACE exams.
The Mock Exam Timetable has been issued and personalised. Mock Exam timetables will be issued to students shortly. These will be held in the second week of the school holidays, except for English which will be held on the last day of this term; Friday, 22 September.
If a student misses an exam due to illness, they must have a medical certificate. If no medical certificate is presented, they will be awarded a zero for the exam as per the SCSA policy. |
Students will also be given their personalised WACE examination timetables for both practical and written ATAR examinations. These will also be available on the SCSA student portal at www.studentportal.scsa.wa.edu.au. Students require these timetables as 'tickets' for entry to the WACE examination room.
A reminder that students enrolled in an ATAR course must sit the external SCSA WACE examination. Failure to sit this exam will result in no credit (for completion or grade) being awarded towards the WACE. This may then impact on achieving the WACE.
It is fantastic that some students have already received early conditional offers to universities based on the Year 11 results. Although these offers may provide a sense of security, completing all ATAR course work and full engagement in examinations is of the utmost importance in order for students to achieve their very best result for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement (WASSA).
ATAR Revision Classes
Free after-school ATAR revision classes will commence in Week 6 and conclude in Week 9 of this term. See website for schedule. This is a great opportunity for our students to get additional assistance from an outside presenter with extensive ATAR course delivery experience and marking of ATAR examinations.
All students need to make sure they submit all their assessment tasks on time. For ATAR students this contributes to 50% of their final result. Students intending to go onto further training require the best possible grades to be competitive and to ensure they achieve their WACE.
For students to be mentally and physically ready for the final weeks for schooling, they need to eat healthy, have less electronic distractions, get some outdoor exercise and have a warm, quiet place to study. Of course, there is light at the end of the tunnel and life will return to normal soon.
Year 11
It is important that Year 11 students keep up to date with their work and submit all assessments on time. The achievement of 14 C grades over Years 11 and 12 is one of several SCSA requirements to achieve the WACE.
As a guide, to keep on track to achieve the WACE, students need to achieve at least 8 C grades by the end of Year 11, or a minimum of 6 C grades if they are on track to complete a Certificate II. Students not achieving these targets place themselves in jeopardy of not meeting WACE requirements by the end of Year 12. No C grades are awarded for non-completion of certificates. Please note, students who are behind in their certificates or late with assessment submissions are required to stay back on Wednesdays Period 5 to catch-up.
There is a strong correlation between poor results and attendance less than 90%. Therefore, I cannot stress enough how important it is for students to attend school regularly. I wish all parents and students the best of luck in the forthcoming weeks.

Student Council News
In the last week of Term 2 the Year 7 Fashion Design class and the Student Council participated in 'Perth Rug Up' in conjunction with the Salvation Army and the CWA. The students learnt to knit 20cm squares to help keep our homeless warm this winter by making blankets and beanies. A big thank you to Ms Dyer for her expertise, time and patience and for providing us with such an amazing opportunity to give back to our community.
Feedback and suggestions have gone electronic! We started this term finalising the online platform for feedback and suggestions and details were distributed to form groups on Monday 31st July.
The student voice is important to the student council and the administration group here at Belridge Secondary College, so please hop on and let us know what you think. |

At the start of August there will be 10 new bins placed around the school. With some field work and research we found that having a few more bins and keeping the crows away from the existing bins would reduce the amount of litter around the school. Thank to the cleaning team and administration for making this project happen. |
Year 10 Dinner Dance
The room was set up beautifully with a dancefloor, table decorations and a beautiful view of the water. Once students were seated and we had run through house-keeping for the evening, it was time to start eating! The food was set up in a buffet style where students were all able to go back and eat as much as they wanted. No one walked away hungry that’s for sure!
After everyone had finished eating, the tables were cleared, and the dancing began! Whilst some were busy dancing, others were eagerly awaiting the donut wall and lollies to come out! These were a huge hit. As well as the dancing and donuts, we had a balloon arch and photo area set up with props for students to use to take photos with.
As the night went on, students continued to dance and socialise. We played a game on the dance floor in pairs called knights, cavaliers and horses which saw everyone’s competitive spirit come out! Winners of this game were Zak Carreras-Simonite and Blair Boardman.
Following on from all of this, we had some awards to present for the night. Award winners were as follows:
Best Dressed: David Gallagher
Best Dressed: Charlotte Cove
Best Dancer: Wycliffe Odidi
Best Dancer: Kacey Worton
Social Butterfly: Brayden Hogan
Door Prize: Link Dillon
After the awards were presented, there was about half an hour of dancing before the night came to an end. I want to say a huge thank you to all the staff who attended the event and showed their support throughout the night. The student’s behaviour was exemplary, and I was really proud to be their Year Coordinator. Students were so polite and seemed to be having an absolute ball, representing Belridge perfectly within the community.

PECAN+ Cyber Security Challenge
Several students from Belridge Secondary College attended the PECAN+ Cyber Security Challenge over the weekend of 5 and 6 August. The challenge features high school students from several states and territories in Australia competing in a series of cyber security challenges. Western Australian students were hosted by Edith Cowan University, in partnership with other Australian universities and with the support of partners including the Australian Signals Directorate.
Students from Belridge Secondary College were formed into an Intermediate team and a Beginner team. The teams spent Saturday learning and practicing a range of cyber security skills. Sunday was competition day with teams earning points for completing challenges. Both the Belridge teams achieved commendable scores and left the challenge with a bag of goodies provided by sponsors.

Year 12 Building & Construction
As part of the Year 12 Building and Construction course students must look at how building supports, trusses and beams work in the building industry. A simple way to test this is to use pop sticks to build a bridge structure - using only pop sticks and glue. Bridges are built to specifications and is judged on how much material is used. This is then put to the test with how many standard bricks the bridge can hold before breaking.
This years winning bridge, constructed by Neville Rundle, managed to hold 10 bricks!

A Day in the Life of a Marine Biologist
Term 3 - The Integrated Science General Year 11 students visited the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) for an excursion where they participated in a variety of problem solving tasks and investigations aimed at exploring the purposes and efficacy of sustainable fishing practices and recreational fishing laws in WA. They then were led through a fish dissection of local species to greater understand the biological adaptations and reproductive structures of fish.
Students then explored Hillary’s boat harbour for a lunch break before visiting AQWA to conduct field surveys on coral species unique to Western Australia and estimate population sample sizes of marine life in a school-linked practical assessment tasks. When returning to school, students were excited to discuss their experiences as Marine Biologists in the field after a successful day of immersive learning. Attended by staff Liberty Warren, Isabella Batka and prac teacher Mariah Lumley.

Year 8 AEP HASS
We love incorporating STEM into our Humanities classroom and during Term 2 we had the opportunity to play with info graphs using Australian migration data. The best thing was we all produced something different and were able to share our information with others in the class. Info graphs were then printed and a display was created for other classes to enjoy.

Year 7 AEP English
Students in our Year 7 AEP English class entered the Premier's Reading Challenge for 2023. Just one of the daily routines in our AEP English class is beginning each lesson with a ten-minute read and another is our Fortnightly Reading Program, whereby students read and write journal entries on what they have read every alternate fortnight.
Students used this, and time spent reading for enjoyment at home, to enter the Premier's Reading Challenge. The challenge was to log 12 or more book titles you have read between the 8 May and 8 September. Students were reading books they have brought from home, borrowed from the library or from our ever-evolving Student Choice Classroom Library. The titles read ranged from Jack Heath's popular 300 Minutes of Danger series to classics like books from R.L Stine's Goosebumps collection. Our AEP students are keen readers and were excited to be part of this competition that has various weekly prizes to be won.

Year 8 AEP English
Throughout Term 2, Mr. Bertoli’s Year 8 English class has been challenged with developing and running a self-directed research task. In preparation for the class’s upcoming test, students were expected to form their own groups and research an advanced and specific language feature. This was then developed into an engaging presentation and Q & A session that was presented for the class. Students used their peers’ research as a revision tool to construct their notes for the upcoming test.
The activity provided students with an opportunity to take control of their own learning and share their key findings with their peers. The experience was designed to further develop students’ interpersonal, ICT and research skills and it was pleasing to see such engaged, unique and valuable presentations.

Ancient History – HASS department
Year 11 and 12 Ancient and Modern History students were treated to a wonderful visit from Egyptologists Dr. Mohamed Megahed and Dr. Hana Vymazalová of Charles University, Prague, who gave us first-hand experience when uncovering the 4,000 year-old tomb of Khuwy; a high-ranked vizier of Pharaoh Djedkare. The processes of excavation, artefact storage and tomb restoration were key objectives presented by the team, who provided us with amazing photos and discoveries from the site.
Students learned about the real-life experiences of working as an Egyptologist. Of particular interest was the ways Dr Megahed and Dr Vymazalová used their problem-solving skills, STEM and working in teams to uncover secrets to the past. Dr Vymazalová shared with us that her favorite part of her work, is the ongoing surprises that come with a recent discovery. Once an artefact or ruin is found, the ongoing research of that item continues to give more insight into how Ancient Egyptians lived. Students were able to see how their learning in the Ancient History course had real life applications.
Students were in awe at the presentation and had many insightful questions to ask the Egyptologists. Special thanks to our West Australian Egyptologist, Heather Tunmore, who liaising with Ms Linto, was able to organise this wonderful session as leaders in the History Teachers’ Association of WA.

Australian Mathematics Competition 2023
Each year, the Mathematics Learning Area at Belridge Secondary College runs the Australian Mathematics Competition for the top classes in all year groups. The Australian Mathematics Competition is Australia’s longest running, which began in 1978. It is also the largest and most well-known maths competition for school students. It is also run internationally.
The competition contains unique problems designed each year by leading educators and academics to challenge and extend your students’ problem-solving skill. This is a fantastic opportunity to apply skills they have learnt to solve problems they may have never seen before.
On Wednesday, 2 August, 149 students come to the library during Periods 1 and 2 to participate in the competition. The day was a success and all students worked hard to solve some very difficult problems. It was really pleasing to see students working enthusiastically to solve the very challenging questions. Congratulations to all the students that took part.

Year 7 Belridge Secondary College Specialist Cricket students experienced their first cricket camp this term. This is an indoor cricket camp in which schools from across Perth compete over 3 days of competitions held at Bouncers Sports Centre. This includes overnight stays at Ern Halliday Recreation Facility.
Camp is a great experience to encourage students to practice and increase their skills, especially in winter by playing indoor cricket (for some this being the first time).
Belridge Secondary College had two teams at camp, with one team making it through to the Grand Final. The game came down to a last ball - a thrilling game -which unfortunately saw us finish as runners up. A great time was had by all and students represented Belridge Secondary College with pride. Fast 5 House Carnival
On Wednesday, 21 June we held the annual Fast 5 House Cup competition for our Netball Academy. This is between Manta Rays, Marlins and Sharks and involves all students from Years 7-12 in the Belridge Netball Academy.
Teams consist of students from all year groups combining on the day to play the Fast 5 style of Netball, where 1, 2 and 3 points are awarded for goals, depending on where the shooters are standing when they take their shots. There are only 5 players on the court from each team and so there are no wing positions. The games were 4 quarters of 6 minutes in length with each team choosing one quarter as their power play. This is where points for this quarter are doubled. There are rolling subs so team members can come on quickly and no one should get too tired. When teams were not fixtured on to play, they were required to umpire and score.
There were 11 teams in total who competed. A big thank you to the Year 11/12 Certificate 3 in Sport and Recreation class who were responsible for the fixtures and team organisation for the day. This is built into their course and a requirement for them to complete it.
Most games were very even with only a few goals difference in each. There were quite a few 2 and 3 pointers scored over the day which was a huge a highlight!
In the end we had a grand final between Marlins 2 and Manta Rays 3, with Marlins winning only in the 4th quarter which they chose as their power play. A very exciting game to watch with multiple changes in the lead over the duration of the game. Congratulations to all team members of Marlins 2 as well as our MVP’s for each house:
House Group | Most Valued Player | Year Group |
Sharks | Ryleigh Richardson | Year 7 |
Marlins | Charli Hynes | Year 9 |
Manta Rays | Camdyn Jenner | Year 8 |
We finished off a fantastic day with some delicious food in the school café followed by presentations to the winning team and MVP’s for the day.
The weather cleared up beautifully over the day after a wet early morning to make a fantastic competition between the three houses. It was great to see all year groups interacting in their teams on and off the court to represent the Netball Academy. The senior girls especially, took on a leadership role in their teams where they helped the younger girls with their netball skills and confidence. I look forward to a bigger and better comp next year.
