With Term 4 well under way, there has been lots to celebrate at the College. The major event of the term has been the departure of our Year 12’s. Their final days with us were celebrated in style starting with an amazing community breakfast, attended by many of our parents and staff. The event was catered for by our Home Economics team and hospitality students, who did an amazing job. We then moved into our Year 12 assembly, which was a celebration of these wonderful students. With such kind and hopeful words spoken by our staff and student counsellors, it was a pleasure to be a part of such a lovely assembly. This was followed by the Year 12’s taking part in the “Big Day Out” excursion down at the beach to round off the day.
Our formal Graduation ceremony took place on Thursday 29 October at Kingsway Christian College Auditorium. Again, what an amazing night. It was great to see the achievements of all students at Belridge SC and Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre. The venue was perfect and although we had a reduced capacity we were still able to do those students proud.
Our Year 6 half day Transition Program, involving students from our local intake primary schools, have also started this term. These have been a great success so far, with lots of happy faces seen around the school as they prepare for their move to the College. The college staff are looking forward to building a strong relationship with our new families over the coming months.
The Belridge Dance Company shared the amazing work of its students to the community during its Annual showcase, this year called Meliora. The performances were to a very high standard, reflecting the hard work and dedication of their teacher, Heather Currie.
With a clear focus on developing our students for the future, I would like to acknowledge Steve O’Neil who has been recognised by Adobe for his work in ICT education and awarded ‘Adobe Education Leader’ status. Well done Steve, you are a credit to the College!
We also celebrated book week this term, finishing the week with our annual dress up day. This year we saw the addition of a photo booth, which was a huge hit with the students. Big thanks to Jo Baker and her team, along with Lisa Manning and those who assisted throughout the week.
As part of our focus on improving mental health and wellbeing, our students and staff participated in Mental Health Week activities along with the Year 11’s taking part in their annual river cruise event. Thank you to all of those involved in providing such great initiatives for our staff and students.
On the sporting field we have seen further achievements this term with our interschool Athletics team winning the Year 7-10 Carnival. Our Cricket team were also crowned champions of the Kim Hughes Shield Cup for 2020 – WA’s top tier secondary school competition. Thank you to Scott Ogilvie and Brent Jarvis-Spinks for their work in developing our young cricketers.
Planning for next year is well underway with staffing positions secured for 2021. We are getting ready for the launch of our new Academic Enrichment Programs in STEM and Humanities and can’t wait to get started. Our student council for 2021 has now been selected, further details can be found in the newsletter.
The progression of the PAC is ahead of schedule, with a proposed handover date of 18 December. The College cannot wait to welcome this fantastic build into our daily life. Staff and students have made many sacrifices to work around the building works, but I’m sure the end result will be worth it.
To finish, I would like to thank the staff and students involved in Remembrance Day, in particular, Virginia Linto, Chloe Ironmonger, Nicola Harris and Lisa Manning. The displays, including our photo acknowledgments looked amazing and I know meant a great deal to our families.
Lest we forget.

November 2020
Hello School Community,
The pieces are coming together for the end of the year, and I’m sure the time for a break and regrouping is well due. Thank you for all your support in helping the school provide a myriad of ways to educate our students through the various elements of chaos that have been thrown our way this year.
A special thanks to our Year 12’s who endured this chaos with optimism and calm in a very important year for them. We have now farewelled our Year 12’s in a wonderful Graduation Ceremony that saw them make their way as wonderful young adults into a world of their own choices and design, and we get ready to welcome our new members to our school community with the preparations for Year 7’s joining us next year well under way.
From a board perspective it is very pleasing to still be able to announce how well the school functioned during the times of disruption, and how quickly operations returned to as near as normal once the system settled down. This speaks highly to the calibre of staff we are fortunate to have at Belridge SC.
The board has welcomed a new community member with the addition of Kush Jalota, who started his appointment at the beginning of November. Kush is a Senior Engineer in the Mining Industry and is very keen to become a part of our community. He brings a number of skills to our board and some out of the box characteristics. A local resident, with no children, we believe Kush will be able to bring a very fresh perspective to the guidance of the board in the way it approaches and sees issues. Kush is also a keen cricketer and either knows or plays with a number of staff and students associated with the BSC Cricket Academy. Welcome on board!

Year 6 Transitions
Over the last few weeks Mrs Howard (Year 7 Co-ordinator for 2021) has conducted the half day transitions for incoming students. These transitions have been very successful with the students navigating their way around the school with the assistance of the Year 9 Peer Support Leaders. The projected enrolments for Year 7 2021 is 190 – 200 students. Parents of students within the local area who have not yet enrolled are encouraged to enrol immediately so they can participate in the transition and orientation programs.
The full Orientation Day will be held on Tuesday 8 December when all the incoming students will meet together for the first time. Parents are also invited to stay for the first hour and participate in a school tour.
On the Orientation Day students will be given information and forms, including the Year 7 2021 Immunisation Program. Students will receive the Boostrix and Gardasil 9 vaccines in a two-dose regime over a six-month period.
Completed immunisation forms can be returned directly back to the College before the end of the school year or at the start of the 2021 school year.
Year 10 2021 Meningococcal vaccinations
All Year 9 students have now been given information and forms regarding the Year 10 2021 Meningococcal vaccinations to be held at the College on Monday 8 March 2021. Forms are due back this year to allow for processing. Please contact the college reception if you have not received the information pack.
Year 7–10 Semester 2 Reports
The end of the term and year is fast approaching. Semester 2 reports will be emailed to parents/caregivers on Tuesday 15 December. With a disrupted start to the year, students settled back into their routines quickly and it was great for schooling to continue without further disruption. I hope Semester 2 reports reflect the fantastic work all students have produced and the progress they have made.

Vice Principal - Years 10, 11 and 12
It is important that we have gatherings like our graduation ceremony, where we can celebrate the achievements of our young adults and realise that our future really is in safe hands. I wish all our Year 12 students the best for the future and hope they stay in touch with the school and share their successes with us.
As for our students in Years 7 to 11, it is business as usual.
Year 11 students have been undertaking either exams or workplace learning in the past two weeks. Reports for Year 11 students will be emailed on Monday 30 November. This provides for parents and students, with concerns about progress and their subject selections for 2021, three weeks to come to the school and discuss changes. It is important that students start 2021 in the correct courses that match their abilities and interests.
Year 10 students should be putting in their best efforts, in preparation for Year 11 courses.
I wish all parents and students the best of luck over the next few weeks.
Several firms have sent me information regarding holiday preparation programs for Year 11 and 12 courses and OLNA. If you are interested in these options, please contact me at the school on 9408 8000.
Wednesday Period 5 in 2021 for Years 11 & 12
A reminder to all Year 11 and 12 students that they must be available to stay at school when required on Wednesday afternoons. Reasons to stay include:
- Year 12 ATAR required every Wednesday for study purposes
- Any student behind in assessments
- Work placement meetings
- OLNA preparation work
- Information sessions and talks
Students should not organise part-time work or driving lessons during this time.
Special Exam Conditions
Please note if your son/daughter does ATAR courses and has any of the following conditions:
- Vision or hearing impairment;
- Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia or dysgraphia ;
- Medical conditions such as ADD/ADHD, illness, psychological, physical disability or fine motor disability
- Conditions such as diabetes
then they may be eligible for extra time or special conditions in exams. If this applies to your son or daughter please contact me at the school.
Student Mobile Phones in Public School Policy
This new policy meant that all students had to have their phones off and out of sight during the school day. The school day is defined as between the times when the student arrives at school and leaves at the end of the day. Our students responded well to this change in 2020, and we look forward to their cooperation in 2021.
Road Safety
It is timely once again to remind all parents and students to take care on the roads around the school. Occasionally, members of the public call the school to inform us that some students have behaved in such a manner to put themselves in danger. Please have a conversation with your son or daughter about the need to behave responsibly and take care when making their way to and from school.

Year 11 VET
While the majority of students have successfully completed the course requirements for this year, a number of parents will have received emails, asking them to ensure students returned to school on Monday 9 November, and continue to attend until all UOCs (Units of Competence) delivered this year have been assessed as competent. It is very important that these UOCs are completed, as students must be competent across every UOC in their certificate in order to achieve completion.
OLNA
Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments
OLNA results have been received and notification has been sent to families. This year, in lieu of the cancelled NAPLAN Online assessments, the School Curriculum Standards Authority allowed Year 9 students to sit optional OLNA assessments in August. Overall, the college’s results show a steady progression, with results above like schools, and the vast majority of students achieving Category 3 across all components by the end of Year 12.

MELIORA – Dance Showcase
The Dance Students have worked tirelessly this year despite the challenges and changes that we faced throughout the year. Students from Year 10-12 classes have had the opportunity to work with a guest teacher, Teresa Thomas, to further enhance their skills and learn new styles of dance.
Fortunately, we were still able to host our annual Dance Showcase, MELIORA (ad.) ‘Better Things Are Coming’ at the end of October. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to display all of their talent and hard work from throughout the year. It was a fantastic night of entertainment and students received some awesome feedback from parents and guests, who couldn't believe the talent that we have at Belridge!
The night had a positive energy amongst everyone and it was fantastic to see the students really enjoying the experience. What a wonderful way to wrap up the year of 2020.

Fashion and Design
Year 8 Fashion and Design students have been creating dream catchers. The exact origin of dream catchers is a little vague, however, many claim they came from the Ojibwe tribe of Native America. They are crafted to catch bad dreams protecting people, especially children from nightmares. It is said the bad dreams get stuck within the strands of sinew while the good dreams pass through and follow the feathers down to the sleeping person. Students were required to research and design their own dream catcher using an earth theme. The beach and ocean seemed to be a hit.

Talented Youth Writers Workshop
Award winning Australian author, Mark Smith, challenged and inspired some of our academic enrichment students during the recent Talent Youth Writers Workshop held at Belridge Secondary College. Engaging with international authors enables students to further develop their 21st Century competencies, in particular their cognitive and intrapersonal domains. During the five sessions held throughout the day, students were encouraged to use personal experience to build their story; to write more authentically. Mark concentrated on setting, explaining the benefits of using micro and macro setting, physically taking students to settings which inspired his Winter Trilogy: The Road to Winter, Wilder Country and Land of Fences, the second book receiving the 2018 Australian Indie Book of the Year for Young Adults.
Students wrote some incredible narrative pieces after using Mark’s advice to bring the reader into the setting by reducing the zoom, bring it in tight. The latter sessions of the day, built on students’ knowledge of characterisation using a layered effect. At the end of six hours of learning and refining their writing craft, students shared their work and are now keen to complete their stories. The next phase will see students seek to have their work published.

ECU Excursion
On Monday 21 September 2020, the Year 9 AE class, Ms Bartle and Ms Ferreri went on an excursion to Edith Cowan University Joondalup campus. The experience included many fun activities, including a tour of the campus (in a unique way) and demonstrations of how things work there.
After meeting Michelle Austin, our host for the day, we proceeded to a lecture room to learn more about the days’ activities. The first activity was an Amazing Race around campus. This was done in the form of asking groups to complete all questions on a sheet, requiring students to explore areas of the campus and find specific things. We were provided with a map, a pen, questions, and an answer sheet. While attempting to search for Building 18, my group stumbled upon Building 15, which had the world’s largest permanent periodic table on the side of the structure. Coincidentally, this related to a question on our sheets, which not many people were able to answer.
After a tough race around the campus, we moved on to our next activity – a science experiment with Ms Nardia Bordas. She took us into the new student labs, full of amazing technology, and walked us through an experiment. The experiment was to see how much light was able to pass through water with different levels of food colouring in it. We measured out the levels of food colouring to put in each sample. We placed the samples in a machine that measured the light as it passed through and comparing the results of the mouthwash test to results of distilled water, we discovered our answer. Let me tell you, there’s not much.
Next, after a short recess break, we proceeded to do another cool test in the Science Lab, this time with Dr Kris Lemson in the student labs. She has studied botanical sciences and loves plants and compost. Our task was to use high resolution digital microscopes to view a small amount of soil and compare it to a small amount of compost, which featured everyone’s favourite – bugs and worms! We were lucky enough to see a worm dispose of its waste. Through its slightly transparent skin, we viewed the intestines in action as they processed the nutrients from the consumed soil.
After our last science test, we made our way over to the maths area where we learned about fractals from Julia. She talked to us about fractals, which are objects that look the same when you zoom in. A broccoli is an example of a fractal as when you zoom in on the stems, they look like another tiny broccoli. We cut paper into a triangle fractal and then figured out Polanski’s triangle patterns. The class enjoyed it very much. The idea of fractals is very complicated, so here’s some examples.

And finally, after some lunch, we had heard from the Future Students representative, who explained university options and pathways, encouraging us to attend ECU in the future. Overall our experience at ECU was excellent, we thoroughly enjoyed it and many students would like to attend some day. Computer Sciences/Counter Terrorism and Intelligence units proved very popular with our class which are both computer-based programs.
We would like to thank the lovely people at ECU, Ms Bartle, and Ms Ferreri for allowing us to attend such an awesome experience. Thank you.

#PeCan+ CTF 2020
What a weekend! An intense two days of Cyber Security (10th and 11th October) culminating in a Capture the Flag competition at Edith Cowan University. Hosted by the ECU Joondalup School of Science and AustCyber, this exciting event was run by a great bunch of passionate cyber security university students, with 100 high school students in attendance! The event ran face-to-face at the ECU Joondalup campus with 22 Perth teams as well as online via zoom with seven interstate teams (5 from Canberra and 2 in Victoria).
Saturday was our training session, where ECU students who developed the CTF challenges presented ‘how-to’ instruction seminars and ‘hints & tricks’ for finding solutions to the challenges. The day also had guest speakers sharing their careers in Digital Forensics (Bex Nitert), Social Engineering and Cyber Safety (Silvana Macri), as well as Pen Testing (Brianna O’Shea). We concluded the first day with a Learn to Linux session.
Sunday was the competition and it was #GameOn from 8:45am with a 2pm hands off the keyboard.
Our Year 11 team, Belridge Botnets (Cameron Spence, Will Johnstone and Oscar Longworth-Baker) and our Year 9/10 team Belridge Bytes (Blake McCullough, Kynan Sharpe, Ethan Gordon and Tom Kay) had to problem-solve, hack sites, debug code, execute tools to get in behind the images, decrypt information, carry out forensic investigations, and reverse engineer programs. So much fun!
Well done to our all our team members who worked tirelessly over the weekend to solve challenges above and beyond expectation. You are a formidable crew!

EMPOWER: Essential skills and mindsets for the changing world of work
Students from the Year 10 Financial, Office and Consumer class were given the opportunity to attend an incursion on Wednesday 11 November, conducted by the Australian Business and Community Network.
The Australian Business and Community network are an Australian wide organisation that provide students the opportunity to interact with real businesses to enable them to enhance their work skills before entering the workforce.
The incursion was run through an online platform due to Covid-19 and the restrictions of not being able to conduct face to face sessions. Students were connected with employees from PWC (Price Waterhouse Cooper) who are a very large company which provides a range of services including audit and assurance, tax and consulting, cover such areas as cybersecurity and privacy, human resources, deals and forensics.
The aim of the two hour session was to build confidence, skills and mindsets such as resilience which will equip students to be able to adapt to a rapidly changing workplace and world. Students also learnt about the importance of recognising their strengths, interests and motivations and the connection to work.
Each group of students, comprising 2–3 students were each allocated two mentors from PWC who shared their experiences about their first jobs, their strengths, their paths to their careers and the importance, in particular, of overcoming failure to support their personal growth. Resilience was also a key aim of the session with ‘fabulous fails’ an important message for students.
Students were given the opportunity to listen to their mentors, interact with them virtually and share their experiences. Each group then reported back to the main room at the end of each mini session, sharing their experiences and knowledge.
The sessions that ABCN provide are invaluable for our students as they offer ‘real life’ experiences for them. Students also learnt the protocols of using online forums and the use of IT as an alternative during these times.

Lego League Competition - Robotics
This term, a group of Year 7 and 8 students have been learning to code Lego robots, as part of the FIRST Lego League Challenge. This gets students to use STEM skills of problem solving and collaboration to design a robot that can complete challenges on the game mat. This year’s focus is on fitness, and students have been working on creating a robot that can use a treadmill and do some weightlifting, amongst other things.
As part of this competition, students are required to not only work on a robot design for the challenge, but also work on a project to find new ways to get people active in the community. The groups have come up with some great ideas so far!
This work will continue into Term 4, as the ‘Krazy Koderz’ and ‘Lego Alphas’ teams prepare for the competition day against other schools.

Thank you Rotary Club!
Belridge has been extremely lucky in receiving $1500 worth of lego donations from the Ascot Rotary Club, as part of their Bricktober fundraising campaign and donations to schools. Northbridge Rotary Club also donated $200 in cash which was put towards lego friends. We wish to express our thanks to both Rotary Clubs and especially Audra Keeble (Belridge Education Assistant) who has worked hard in seeking donations from organisations for the benefit of our students.
The Lego Play club is now open to students with special needs and any Year 7-9 students who want to come and have a go at building Lego creations.

Life size learning in Geography
Year 12 Geography students have been busy completing their Geography course. They have had just enough time at the end of their year to review the course via clock revision and by life size learning to better understand the size and shape of the Perth metropolitan area in preparations for their upcoming exams.
The HASS department wish all Year 11 and 12 students the best in their upcoming exams.

Quality or Quantity?
This term in Humanities, the Year 9's have finished up their Geography unit and now commenced Economics. They have already learnt about the basics of Economics, the flow of cash through circular flow, and this lesson was around meeting the needs of the consumer. The question was, quality or quantity, which might be a silly question to ask teenagers when it comes to food! We compared the price and taste of branded foods compared to supermarket brands, but at the end of the day, it didn't really matter because at twice the price for well-known brands, quantity won every time. And no matter how much more there is in the supermarket brands, there was definitely no leftovers.

Science: Litter Audit
This term the Year 10 Science class has been learning about biodiversity and conservation, a unit in which I like students to undertake some practical work. This year we looked at the growing problem of plastic waste and litter that has a dramatic impact on terrestrial and marine life. One idea was to team up with the government organisation Keep Australia Beautiful https://kab.org.au/ and conduct a litter audit of the school grounds. Students spent one lesson collecting litter from around the school grounds and the another analysing it by type.
It was great to see the students' efforts in carrying out the audit that gave them an idea of how much and what type of litter can be found in the yard. It turned out that the worst culprit was plastic, with chips bags, wrappers and straws being the most items. Plastic items were followed by paper products like napkins and juice boxes.
At the end of the lesson students collected 6kg of litter in 45 minutes that could later be disposed of correctly.
Although there is still much room for improvement, in terms of reducing litter around the school, we found only one plastic drink bottle. It seems that most of our students already bring reusable water bottles to school. Reusing drink and food containers is a great way to reduce the litter in the environment and a trend that will hopefully continue on in the future.
The Year 10 class would like to thank Samantha Culbertson from Keep Australia Beautiful for lending the collection equipment and other resources needed for the litter audit.

Book Week 2020
This year's Book Week consisted of fun activities such as quizzes, creating book covers in Minecraft, Book Chat with Dymocks and wrapping up with our 'dress-up as your favourite character' and photo booth day. Each student and staff who had their photo taken received a book mark with their photo on it. We look forward to more fun activities to celebrate Book Week in 2021.

Belridge Beats students start their music library
A DJ isn’t much of a DJ without good music. Building up a music collection isn’t easy for a young teenager, especially in the age of streaming music services. Fortunately the students in the Belridge Beats DJ classes are getting some professional help.
Ultimix are one of the biggest and most respected names in the DJ industry. Since the 80s, Ultimix have been providing the latest popular music to top DJs around the globe. Belridge Beats students recently received several Ultimix issues for free. The music includes some new issues with some of the latest chart topping music as well as several “best of” issues containing dance favourites from past decades. Students have been enjoying practicing their developing skills using Ultimix remixes as they start to build their own personal music library. We appreciate the support from Ultimix.

Year 9 Cricket Camp
The Year 9 cricket camp was held in Rockingham over three days this term. Belridge SC was joined by a number of other schools including Kent Street, John Forrest, Dalyellup and Butler. Belridge entered two teams and games were 40-50 overs long. Both teams not only played competitive, hard cricket but are to be commended on their attitude and behaviour. There were many positive contributions made from students towards our wins, however, there were two stand-out performers for the camp and they were Matthew Carroll and Ethan Benson.
The camp is an opportunity for our students to extend and challenge themselves from a competitive stand point but also interact and work with students from other schools whilst developing themselves as individuals.

High School Cup Finals Day
On Wednesday 9 September, Belridge Secondary College had two Netball teams from our Netball Academy make it to the Gold Netball Centre for the finals day of the School Sport WA High School Cup Competition. This is the first time we have had two teams make it to the Netball State finals. In the Lower Division (Years 7 and 8) we had our Year 7 Team 1 make it, which is an amazing achievement given they are the younger of the two year groups.
In the Middle Division (Year 9 and 10) our top Year 10 Team not only made it through to the finals day, but made it through undefeated. This team actually won the state title two years ago in 2018 as Year 8’s in the Lower Division, so is a massive credit to the girls for making it this far again.
The day was a huge success and it was wonderful to see our students thriving in their element. We came away from the day with the Year 7 Team finishing 4th in the entire state. It was such a great experience for the girls, especially after only a semester of playing together as a team. I am very proud of their efforts throughout the whole High School Cup series.
The Year 10 team came away as the overall winners of the day in the Middle Division and taking the title of State Champions (again)! Such a big achievement for the girls, particularly for being able to stick together as a team and win both as Year 8’s and again as Year 10’s. They had a tough game and finished up beating Harrisdale in the Grand Final by 5 goals.
Congratulations to both teams for their successful High School Cup seasons. In particular, to the Year 10 team as Champions and to Karla Stagg for receiving MVP of the final.
YEAR 7's

Aimee is currently working on a new song and hoping to release before the end of this year.

Friday 16 October was the last official day of school for the Year 12 students of 2020. The day began with a delicious breakfast catered for by the Home Economics staff in the school cafe for students, staff and parents, followed by our Leavers Assembly and then on to the Big Day Out at Whitford Nodes.
Good luck to the Class of 2020 - keep in touch!

Belridge Secondary College’s graduation night took place on Thursday 29 October at the world class Kingsway Christian College Auditorium. Staff, dignitaries, parents and friends attended to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of the Year 12 cohort of 2020.
The final school event for these Year 12 students was one to remember and I would like to commend the students on their immaculate presentation and attitude throughout the night. Again, reinforcing the high standards that this year group adhered to during their high school lives at Belridge.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the entire Year 12 cohort of 2020 for the positive contribution they have made to Belridge Secondary College and thank them for leaving an endearing footprint on our College community. The past six years have been both a privilege and an honour to have shared your secondary school journey as your Year Coordinator. Seeing you develop and mature into responsible and capable young adults reinforces that the College has supported you in preparing well to succeed in your future endeavours.
I wish each and every one of you every success and encourage you to always embrace every opportunity. The world is a big place and it is now waiting for you to make your mark on it.

During Weeks 4 and 5, from 2–13 November, Belridge has been hosting our future Year 7 students commencing in 2021 who came to visit and participate in their half day transition session.
During this day students were given a brief introduction to the Student Services Team and met with the Principal and/or Vice Principals. Where applicable, students also completed the Australian Gifted and Talented test and participated in assorted team building activities before concluding the morning with an amazing race style activity using a map of the school. Visiting students were provided with a muffin and juice box from the school café so they could enjoy the full experience of recess with the Secondary College students.
I look forward to welcoming you all again for the Orientation Day on on Tuesday 8 December.

Uniform Supplies
We wish to update you on the current position regarding the supply of uniforms to our school.
Due to the location of where uniforms are produced and the impact of extended lockdowns due to COVID 19, the uniform shop has been experiencing shipping delays due to reduced operational productivity of worldwide ports and the availability of containers.
If there are any unforeseen delays that may affect stock holding for the 'back to school' selling period, the uniform shop may find it necessary to ration or restrict the number of items initially supplied in some products. This measure is to ensure that uniforms are available to all students until further stocks arrive.
We have been assured that the uniform suppliers are closely monitoring production and deliveries and are confident that uniforms will be available for the new school year.
Should the position change, we will notify you as soon as we are made aware.
