Welcome to Term 2, in a blink of an eye we are already more than half way through the term and have some great stories and news to share with you.
Year 8 Camp
The highlight of this term so far has to be our C8 Camp. In Week 4, 107 Year 8 students attended the Swan Valley Adventure Centre for a 3-day camp. As usual, our teachers stepped up to the plate volunteering their time and energy making this an amazing event that the students will remember for a long time. The camp provided the chance for teachers and students to see each other in a different light, to build relationships and strengthen bonds that will hopefully translate into effective partnerships back at school. Feedback from the camp staff and teachers who attended has been very positive. The kids were awesome, they had a fantastic time and engaged well with the activities. A big thank you to all the staff that attended and gave up their time, in particular Jodie Grieve (Year 8 Coordinator) for her hard work in the organisation and management of the event.
NAPLAN
This term has also seen Year 7 and 9 participate in the NAPLAN online testing. Our ICT and infrastructure held out well and progressed with minimal disruption. A small drop out nationally in Week 4 was dealt with quickly with flexibility and professionalism. Thank you to Carlos Notarpietro for the organisation and management of the NAPLAN testing, along with our Maths and English staff for their support.
Course Tasters
Early this term we also held our student course tasters for prospective students. This year we added a STEM taster session to the choices, which saw a huge uptake resulting in the event becoming booked out. Our Fashion, Cricket, Netball, Dance and Music programs were all well represented. This event did also include a parent tour that unfortunately had to be cancelled due to COVID restrictions. However, we have had a huge response to our rescheduled date in Week 6. Thank you to the staff for planning and delivery of these sessions. I saw lots of smiling faces leaving at the end of the session. Hopefully we get to see them again as Belridge students next year.
Student Services Team
As part of our commitment to the holistic support of our students, we have recently changed the structure of our Student Services Team. This sees the addition of Mr Chadd Richardson joining us in the position of Head of Student Services – Middle School (Years 7-9). Chadd joins us with a wealth of experience in this role. I would like to take this opportunity to publically welcome Chadd to the team and join our Belridge family.
Course Selections for 2022
Students in Years 8-11 will be selecting their subjects for 2022 very shortly. Handbooks are in the process of being finalised and will be available soon on our school website under the curriculum section.
Parents - We Need You!
Many of you may have seen on Facebook or Connect that are School Board elections are open. This process is open to staff and parents. I would really like to take this opportunity to ask our parents in particular to apply for these positions. I think sometimes people assume that we have lots of applicants and that we don’t need anymore, but the fact is we need you! We have very few applicants and it is such an important part of our school governance. So, if you feel you can give up 2 hours, twice per term and would like to be an active member of the school community, please download a nomination form from our school website and either hand it in to the front office or email to Nicola Harris - Parent Board nomination form
Annual Report 2020
Our Annual Report for 2020 is also available on our school website for your reference detailing our achievements against our School Business Plan targets across the 2020 school year.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Sharon Lyon
Principal
And indeed it is. You will read in other areas of the school magazine of all the wonderful things that are happening both within and outside of the general curriculum that expose our students to wonderful opportunities. Take time to think about what these opportunities mean to the education and enhancement of skills to our students.
The two main things coming out of the recent board meeting is the call for nominations for parents to sit on the school board. Our current parent representatives terms are very shortly coming to an end and new members are being sought from our parent community. We are looking for parents to fill terms of 1 year, 2 years and 3 years on the board. Please don’t think that someone else will do it, as that is not always the case. If you would like the opportunity to contribute to the school in an impactful way, the board is a great way of doing that. You will only be required for board meetings twice a term for approximately 2 hours a meeting, and this is a wonderful opportunity for your voice to be heard in ways that have a strong impact on the way the school operates. Look out on connect, and our Facebook page for more information around this.
Secondly I regret to inform that due to public sector standards we again need to advertise our Principals position. I am very aware of the impact this has on our schools leadership and stability. Unfortunately it is deemed as a requirement through the PSS. The education department have tried to work with us to ensure a continuity of leadership, however their hands are tied at this stage. I will sit on the selection panel and put the view of the school forward on what we believe to be the best decision in regards to the continued and stable leadership of the school at this stage.

Year 7 & 9 NAPLAN
The 2021 NAPLAN testing cycle has just been completed. All the Year 7 & 9 students sat literacy and numeracy tests. I wish to congratulate the students on their positive approach to these tests. I would also like to thank Mr Notarpietro for his organisation. Coordinating 380 students to sit four tests, while the remainder of the college followed a normal timetable, was a massive task. A huge thank you to the teaching staff who conducted the tests, and Mr Robartson for all his technical assistance throughout the two week testing period.
Results of student performance will be forwarded to parents/caregivers once they become available. Year 9 NAPLAN student performance is now linked to secondary WACE certification. Students achieving Band 8 in Year 9 NAPLAN will be deemed to have met the minimum literacy and numeracy requirements for secondary WACE certification. Students who do not achieve Band 8 are required to sit the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (OLNA) tests in Year 10 and subsequent years until they meet the minimum standards.
C8 Camp – Year 8
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the C8 Camp at the Swan Valley adventure Centre for 12–14 May. The aim of the camp is to build relationships and friendships through Courage, Community, Connections, Culture, Choices, Communication, Care and Challenges. Reports indicate it was a very successful camp with great student participation and leadership and I hope all students are richer from the experience. I wish to thank Ms Grieve for her meticulous planning and preparation for the camp. These events do not just crystalize, they require many hours of diligent work beforehand. I wish to also thank all the staff that assisted Ms Grieve, from the clerical staff to the staff who spent 3 days on camp with the students. Great sacrifices were made for the benefit of our students. Thank you once again for all your positive input and guidance throughout the camp. Please read the camp report and photographs later in this newsletter.
2021 Open Day Tours & Taster courses
Wednesday 26 May
Over 130 prospective parents registered to view the College on Wednesday 26 May. Unfortunately we had to postpone the initial planned date due to the COVID restrictions in place at the time. The aim of the tour is to give parents the opportunity to view our college at work, including the comprehensive Year 7 to 12 programs, our academic extension programs - including STEM) the specialist Cricket and Fashion & Design programs and the elite Netball and Arts programs. Fortunately we were able to conduct our planned taster courses for 109 students in Years 5 & 6 on the original planned date. These included STEM, cricket, netball, music, dance and fashion & design. This half day event gave students the opportunity to see and participate in sessions that outline the benefits of each of these elite programs. Students participated enthusiastically in the courses and were disappointed when they finished.
Year 7 Enrolments - 2022
2022 Enrolment packs are available from all our partner primary schools. Enrolment packs are also available directly from the College. Parents are urged to submit applications for enrolment immediately to allow the college sufficient time to plan for 2022. Submission dates for our specialist and elite courses are outlined in the enrolment pack.
School sickness procedures
I would like to remind parents/caregivers of the school protocols should a child fall ill during the day. During the class time, the class teacher will make an assessment and send the child to Student Services. If the child feels ill during a break time they are to make their own way to Student Services. The school will then contact the parent/caregiver if required. Students are not to contact their parents/caregivers directly to be picked up because they are not feeling well.

Welcome Back!
Term 2 is well and truly underway now. Traditionally, it is a busy term for parents and students, with important decisions to be made. During the term, Years 9, 10 and 11 students will receive important information about subject selections for 2022. It is important for students to attend to these selections as early as possible and seek advice from the administration and their teachers whenever necessary. The choices students make will determine which subjects run at the school next year. THESE FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ON TIME.
Exams
This term, Years 10, 11 and 12 students will all be doing exams.
Year 11 and 12 during weeks 7 and 8, and Year 10 Thursday and Friday of Week 8. The Senior School students do exams and some do work placement. Students on Work Place Learning must still sit any scheduled exams. It is important that these students study consistently throughout the term to avoid stress. Students should continue to ask their teachers for exam and study tips. Parents can help by reinforcing the importance of study at home.
On the 10 and 11 June, the Year 10 students have exams in Maths, English, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences.
We hope these will help guide subject selections for 2022 and give students a chance to practice study and examination skills.
Please note, exams are held periods 1 to 4 and students then go home at lunchtime.
Reports
The Semester 1 reports are important for all students to assess where they are at. Years 10 and 11 students should carefully analyse their current success and progress when making selections for 2022.
Year 12 students need to reassess the time spent on, and the effectiveness of, their study if their results are not what they expected. Remember the school staff are always ready to assist students.
All Year 12 Students
Year 12 students will soon be asked to complete their student declaration and permission online for SCSA. Please read the following carefully:-
Parent Information:
Student Declaration and Permission online
All Year 12 students wanting to complete their WACE this year need to complete the online student declaration and permission. Details of this process are listed below.
NOTE: The deadline for students to complete this process online is 17 JUNE 2021.
I suggest this is completed before exams and work placement.
We will provide times during Weeks 5 and 6 for students to do this during form time, but students who miss these need to complete it at home.
What is the Student Declaration?
Year 12 students need to declare that they are aware of the requirements to achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and for sitting the WACE examinations. These requirements are listed in the Year 12 Information Handbook which is available on the Authority website at:
http://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/publications/year-12-information
(An information letter was also emailed to parents on 4 May via Connect)
In closing, I wish all our students a successful term and look forward to them achieving their best.

OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment)
We recently received the results from Round 1 OLNA. It is pleasing to see many students achieve Category 3 across all components, and many other students getting closer, by achieving Category 3 in one or two of the components. Students who have achieved the required standard (Category 3) in all three categories have now met the WACE Literacy and Numeracy achievement standard, and will no longer be required to sit OLNA assessments in future rounds.
For students who did not achieve Category 3, we will continue to support you to achieve it in the next rounds. Letters and official (SCSA) OLNA results have been sent to all families involved. This should clarify your current status. A reminder that Year 11 and 12 students who are yet to achieve the standard must attend the OLNA support sessions in the college library on Wednesdays from 1:30pm to 2:30pm.
Year 10 students have been provided free access to olna.com.au Skill Builders, and have 24/7 access to these resources. Please let me know if there are any issues with logging in to the site.
VET (Vocational Education and Training)
Our VET students continue to work towards completing their qualifications on schedule. We have finalised all ‘third party agreements’ for AQF qualifications delivered by BSC staff, on the BSC campus, on behalf of our RTO partners.
It is important for students and their families to understand that the college is not an RTO (Registered Training Organisation), and we work in partnership with RTOs to deliver qualifications. Certificates, once achieved, are issued by the relevant RTO.

The WA Government has significantly increased funding to DTWD (Department for Training and Workforce Development), making more VET courses available for secondary school students. 56 of our senior students are completing a range of career start Certificate II and III qualifications by attending the RTO one day per week. Students were selected in a competitive process, where they were required to submit an application. Successful applicants were selected based on school results and teacher recommendations.
The Senior School Examinations and Workplace Learning break run during Weeks 7-8 of this term. At the time of writing 42 Year 11 and 12 students had secured a work placement in an area of vocational interest. Students enrolled in one or more ATAR courses are required to attend the college for course examinations only during this period of time. Students on work placements have been instructed to let their employer know ahead of time if they need to attend exams during their work placement.

Hospitality
Our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students have begun Pre–School Perks, a coffee club that operates out of our Home Economics room. Five days a week from 8:00am to 8:30am students prepare and serve espresso coffee and interact with customers, the most loyal being Mr MacMahon and Mr Stephens. Throughout the term, all hospitality students will have the opportunity to be the daily barista, supervisor and delivery person.
Herb Garden
Our fresh herb garden was planted earlier this month. After weeds were cleared, soil conditioned and reticulation installed, a large array of herbs were planted for use in our Home Economics classes. Special thanks to Rebecca Hartley and Pauline Hull for making this happen.
Cooking Classes
Our Year 8 students have begun cooking this term and are learning to make an array of healthy lunches and our upper school classes are creating complex seasonal dishes. The Year 10 Vocational Food’s classes recently learnt how to make fresh pasta, using the pasta machines to create fettucine which they stirred through a delicious Sicilian chicken dish.

HASS Week 2021
Last term, Week 9 we celebrated all things Humanities. Across the year groups and in classes, students were able to participate in a number of activities relevant to the curriculum they had been studying. Year 7's enjoyed designing the inside of tombs, using the traditional Ancient Egyptian methods of tomb writing and story telling. They then cut out the shape and created pyramids fit for the next Pharoah. The Year 8's who are currently studying Liveability for Geography built 3D models of buildings within cities and placed them according to the rules of city planning. The Year 9's enjoyed getting creative with wreath making for our Anzacs for the World War One curriculum and used tissue paper to create masterpieces that then went on display in the library for commemoration of Anzac Day.
We had a wonderful time celebrating all things HASS and there was some amazing work created, well done.
In the Ancient Egypt curriculum in Humanities, Year 7's have been learning about burial customs and mummification. Following the instructions for mummification, minus the removal of organs of course, we practised traditional wrapping of the body after the embalming process. In pairs or groups of three, the self nominated mummy lay down on the table, ready to be wrapped. The wrapper learnt first hand just how difficult the wrapping process and the mummy learnt just how hot being wrapped up in bandages can be! Everyone had so much fun either doing the wrapping or being wrapped and we all gained a better understanding of such a complex procedure. We followed up with a 'how to' poster for the entire gruesome process.

Guitar Masterclass
On the 28th of April our guitar students and their tutor, Kylie Walpole, had the opportunity of a lifetime when Jonathon Paget, Head of Guitar at WAAPA, came to the school to give a masterclass. The one-and-a-half-hour session was an occasion for these students to be inspired by seeing the very best of what can be achieved on their instruments and was well received by all who attended.
We were very grateful to Jonathon for giving up his time to come and share his knowledge with our students.

Year 7 - Academic Enrichment
The Year 7, AE HASS class have been investigating Ancient Egypt. Over the past few weeks they have had the opportunity to use their STEM skills to investigate and create. They were given the challenge to create a pyramid using only toothpicks and clay. In small groups, they brainstormed and overcame challenges to build some impressive structures and artefacts to be ‘buried’ in their pyramids.
The class also learnt about the mummification process and participated in an experiment to see what salt combination was best for mummifying an apple slice. They predicted what they thought would work and then left their slices in the salts for just over a week. It was very interesting to see the results of how mixtures of table salt, epsom salt and bi-carb soda work to draw out moisture and preserve these apples.

Inspiring students - Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (HPIMR)
Year 12 Biology ATAR students from Belridge SC joined students from Lynwood SHS, and were given the opportunity to observe and interact with scientists at HPIMR. Forming part of an assessment, students took part in the BioDiscovery Centre Biotechnology Program.
They were guided by medical research scientists to use laboratory techniques and knowledge utilised in medical research. Sessions included amplifying a DNA sample in search for the BRAF gene that codes for melanoma, loading a gel for electrophoresis to make a DNA profile, and taking a tour of the labs to better understand the work involved in scientific research.
HPI is a world leading medical research hub, conducting innovative research that translates into lasting health benefits. A key focus of the institute is to engage school groups into the world of medical research through the Lotterywest Biodiscovery Centre.
“I found the experience to be very informative as we performed a wide range of scientific skills that are used in the field of Biological Science. One of these was learning the skill of micro-pipetting. Overall, I would highly rate the excursion as it was also an enjoyable activity.”
-Nic Harrold
“It was very interesting to work through the scientific processes of PCR and gel electrophoresis, and link them to real life applications, such as treating cancer. A fun and informative excursion.”

Celebrating Science Ambassadors
Sharing your passion with others, not only provides joy but can also infect others with your passion. Five recent Academic Enrichment graduates volunteered to be our resident Science Ambassadors at our recent Taster Day for the 2022 STEM AE Program offered at Belridge SC for Year 5 and 6 students.
The excitement of learning biological classification through playing fishing games, utilising technology to create augmented reality focusing on the ocean sustainability and engineering, building and racing ships balancing speed and buoyancy exuded a buzz throughout the classroom. I’m not sure who had more fun; our Year 5 and Year 6 participants or our amazing Year 10 Science Ambassadors?
Thank you Ethan Gordon, Georgia Lanchbury, Kynan Sharpe, Danny Stewart and Aliesha Thorpe for inspiring the next generation of scientists. Thank you also to Ms Joan Orr, Ms Karen Lopez and Ms Melanie Hudson for initiating this exciting STEM experience for all.

RAC Bstreetsmart Excursion
Year 10 students who are currently participating in the Keys4Life pre-driver program during Health Education classes, had the opportunity to expand their awareness of responsible driving as they attended the RAC bstreetsmart event at RAC Arena on the 31st March.
RAC Bstreetsmart featured a crash scene re-enactment attended by the emergency services, just as it would occur at a real crash site. The students also had the opportunity to listen to speakers who have been directly impacted by road trauma and talk with emergency services personnel.
A big thank-you to Janneke Markovic for organising the excursion as well as the other Phys Ed staff who attended and assisted. Also a big thank-you to our amazing Year 10 students for the maturity and good behaviour displayed throughout the day. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and I know the students I spoke to found it both informative and interesting.

Year 11 and 12 Woodwork
We need your recycled timber!
As part of their course, Year 11 and 12 students have to work with and use recycled timber. Jarrah is our preferred timber, but almost any type will do. Jarrah is very expensive to purchase, so one of our main sources of supply is recycled timber - mainly old pergolas pulled down.
If anybody is pulling down a pergola and would like to donate the material to the school, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please contact the school or call me direct on my mobile 0432 478 123. The photos featured show how the students de-nail the timber, go through the process of machining to be able to use beautiful old growth timber already milled to the finished product.

Try a Trade - Bricklaying
Last term the Design & Technology learning area ran a Try a Trade two-day introductory bricklaying course for Year 10 students.
Dean Pearson of ABBTF (Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Fund) kindly funded the project by supplying the bricks, consumables and a qualified TAFE bricklaying instructor to deliver the course to our students.
Students participated in hands on bricklaying exercises and from the feedback enjoyed the experience with some even discussing with Dean the prospect of taking up an apprenticeship. Currently, there are up to 100 apprenticeships available for bricklaying in the state.
Graeme Dix, Trade Development Manager of BGC also accompanied Dean Pearson to speak to the group about the current shortage of bricklayers and other trades in the construction industry.
We are hoping to run another course later on in the year aimed at Year 11 and 12’s.
A big thank you to Dean from ABBTF and his continuous support in running these courses and to Meredith Fuhrmann, Careers Coordinator, for all her time in organising this project.
White Card Course
Last term, students in Year 11 and 12, and a small group from the Education Support Centre, were given the opportunity to complete their WHITE CARD delivered by Paragon Training. The white card is a mandatory course that is a requirement for anyone who wants to work in the construction industry. Students need this qualification when they go out on work experience.

Success with Lego!
Audra Keeble is one of our passionate and dedicated Education Assistants at Belridge Secondary College. She has initiated a new club for students who love Lego. Lego Club is open for Year 7, 8 and 9 students to attend and Audra regularly has a sizeable turnout. The students actively build Lego as they socialise on Tuesday and Thursday break times. This Club is an engaging, safe, supportive, and inclusive initiative run by Ms. Keeble, for which the school and students are incredibly grateful for.

On the 12th to the 14th of May, our Year 8 students embarked on a grand adventure, into the bush landscape of the Swan Valley. The Camp provided students with experiences that are not always possible within the confines of the school grounds. Providing opportunities that develop deeper learning, confidence, independence, responsibility, and a sense of belonging. Building behaviours and dispositions for success, many of which begin with the letter ‘C’.
Students participated in a range of well-designed learning activities that Challenged them to think Critically, Creatively and enhance their Communication skills whilst also building their Confidence. They made stronger Connections with each other and staff.
We arrived at Swan Valley and settled into our accommodation. Houses: Boronia, Myrtle, Lavender and Wattle. Made our beds and then gathered to the town hall, where we formed coloured teams and were handed an egg! Each team was responsible for the love and care of their egg, some sadly did not make the journey …
For the next 3 days the teams participated in challenges that required leadership, communication, and courage. Tested their stamina navigating through the commando course, crawling through tunnels, mud, rolling tyres and climbing over obstacles. They tested their nerves with heights flying through the air on a flying fox. Building a tower of crates with the challenge of not falling off! During the nights, we sat by the fire, devoured too many marshmallows, tested our knowledge in the Quiz and danced to the latest tunes by the international renown quest DJ artist DJ Steel (Mr Steve O’Neil).
This camp would not have happened without the help of some very special teachers, who gave up their own personal time to help with organisation and running of the camp. A big THANK YOU to the following behind the scenes and front-line staff:
- Ms Alisha Holliday: (Ms Holliday could not attend the camp but she was one of the first to offer her time (even though she is already so busy!) to help with the administration of the camp.
- Mr Brent Jarvis Spinks - total legend - administration help, even when you were already so busy.
- Mrs Belinda Noakes - Our medical Officer - staying overnight, assisting with all kinds of medical situations and being non-stop on the go!
- Mrs Joanne Savoury - Our School Nurse - helping compile charts and files, creating our first aid kit!
- Mrs Anna Dyer - endless hours of sewing our coloured team head bands.
- Mrs Grae Hastings - give that woman cheesels when you see her! Can’t thank you enough for behind-the-scenes admin help and all that you did on camp!
- Mr Steve O’Neil DJ Steel! - ongoing camp help from day one, staying the nights and running the coolest disco ever. A big cheer for Mr O’Neil who also attended school during the day, then straight to camp in the afternoon and evenings!
- Mr Lazo Njegich - for all your help, attending camp both during the day and night and all your help running the camp!
- Ms Heather Currie - constant support, constant help, camp documents, admin, organisation and being on call 24/7
- Mr Phil Leeman our Chaplain - running our games session, admin support, staying overnight and being awesome all-round cool guy.
- Mr Ogi - providing our sports gear - Cricket game was awesome! You would have been proud of our skills!
- All your form teachers: Ms Heather Ferreri, Mr Simon Macdonald, Ms Ashleigh Howat, Mr Jarrad Timu, Mrs Hanna Sanders, Mrs Grae Hastings, who chose to be with you, rather than home with their family. Remember this was all volunteered - thank them when you see them!
- Ms Kerry Clarke - thank you for your support and coming out to say hi to our Year 8s
- Mr Mario Pisano our Deputy, answering all my questions and ongoing support and encouragement and for coming out and encouraging the students!
- Mr Carlos Notarpietro - administration support and guidance.
- Sharon Lyon - ongoing encouraging support and coming out and spending the afternoon, cheering the students on!
- The front office ladies! You are amazing - thank you for your help and patience.
As you can see, it is a whole school approach. This camp was brought to you by the letter C “Community”. It was a community of dedicated, passionate teachers that made this camp happen. Thank you!
And finally, thank you to our students - your enthusiasm, manners, and friendship towards each other made me the proudest Year Coordinator in the school!
