Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2021 school year.
After a delayed start to the year, it was great to see our returning students and greet our new Year 7's.
The first few weeks raised a few challenges for our staff and students, but they dealt with these challenges in a flexible and proactive manner. Our focus was to ensure our school community was safe following the protocols and guidance provided by the Department of Education and that teaching and learning was our priority.
Adjusting to a new routine can be difficult, making new friends and finding your place in a new environment. However, it has been pleasing to see how quickly our Year 7’s have adjusted and settled into high school life. Feedback from our staff has been very positive regarding our newest cohort.
Our Year 12 cohort from 2020 certainly did the College proud and achieved some great results. The WACE achievement rate was 93% which is higher than both Like Schools and Public Schools. Students who completed their ATAR resulted in a median ATAR of 72.5 which was slightly lower than our like schools, however is a huge increase on 2019 (66.3). This is the highest median ATAR we have achieved in recent years, with 6 students achieving an ATAR above 90, one of which achieved an ATAR of 99.7. The school also achieved the Subject Exhibition and Certificate of Excellence in the ATAR course of Computer Science. With 8 students achieving a Certificate for Merit for their overall achievements. Our Strong OLNA results saw 98% of our eligible cohort achieve the minimum standard in both literacy and numeracy. We also had 42% of our students leave with two or more VET qualifications, placing them in a strong position for future pathways.
As part of the Department of Education’s strategic direction, the college is committed to achieving the outcomes set in Focus 2021. With a clear focus on future pathways and STEM education, we aim to provide the best possible support for our students to achieve a successful future through education and beyond. Our new teaching framework “R LEARNERS” aims to embed a whole school approach to teaching and learning across the college. The framework will give staff and students a common language to support the delivery of excellence in teaching and learning in every classroom. Our strong focus on building leadership capacity and professional growth aim to develop our leaders to deliver effective and evidence based practices at the highest level. The college has engaged in a number of leadership development programs to ensure our staff and students are provided with the support they need to be at their best.
The wait is over! After a year of disruption and building works, the highly anticipated new Performing Arts Centre is ready for use. Completed on time and handed over ready for the start of the school year this is a massive boost for the school. This world class facility designed by Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects and built by McCorkill Constructions is both practical and beautiful. Its thoughtful design and advanced technical capabilities will transform the way we teach. With custom Artwork designed by Artist Rick Vermey, it is the shining light of the community. This investment in the College has brought a sense of pride and self-worth to our school community. A feeling that “We are worth it, and better things are coming!” gives us optimism for the future. The Performing Arts Centre was officially opened on Monday 22nd February with a VIP evening. This was a fantastic night and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody involved in the organisation and delivery of such a fabulous occasion.

Building on this we then had a visit from non-other than the Premier himself, the Hon Mark McGowan! The Premier visited our Science labs and spoke with staff and students. He then met our wonderful Robotics student team who couldn’t wait to tell him all about their work and efforts in the First Robotics League competition. With his press conference then taking place on our front lawn, some lucky staff and students got to see firsthand this rare media event. Following this visit, it was announced that Belridge SC will receive $1.5Million in STEM funding for updates in facilities. We are so pleased with this announcement and know that this will make a massive difference to the education and future careers of our students.

Term 1 has started off at a very fast pace, with so many events already underway. The delivery of our Elevate seminars for parents and students have been well attended over the last few weeks. These seminars aim to get our students into good study habits, forming a routine to help them develop the skills they will need to be successful in the future.
We also held our BYOD parent’s seminar for our Year 7 families, which focused on supporting parents to assist their child in navigating their new machine and developing skills around the use of Microsoft 365 and the internet.
Week 4 saw us celebrate the annual Year 12 Ball at the amazing Optus Stadium. WOW, what a night! The event went off without a hitch due to the fantastic planning and preparations of our Year 12 Coordinator, Alicia Holliday. The students looked absolutely amazing and their behaviour was exemplary. There were some very tired feet, but lots of smiling faces at the end of the night. With all the madness in the world at the moment, I am so glad that they got to celebrate this special occasion. I would also like to thank our photographer Jodie Grieve and all of the staff who gave up their time to supervise and celebrate with our students.
Some upcoming events to be aware of include Year 10,11,12 OLNA and the planning and preparation for Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN.
Our VET information evening is scheduled to take place on Monday 8 March from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. We also have a session on E-Smart learning available for parent sign up - this aims to assist in supporting your child access to IT platforms in use across the college – Tuesday 9 March (Week 6).
Belsurf is also scheduled for Friday 12 March. This is a whole school event, for all students to enjoy down at the beach. Last year was fantastic, hope to see all of our students down there again this year enjoying the fun events arranged by the Phys Ed Team.
Parent/Teacher interview night is Wednesday 17 March, booking information will be emailed shortly.
To finish, I would like to say a huge thank you to some of our community partners. Firstly, Rotary Club Northbridge and Joondalup for their sponsorship of our students to take part in STEM summer school programs at ECU. Secondly to RAC for their donations to our Autos program and finally to our students, staff, parents and community members for their contribution to the Christmas Hamper Appeal at the end of last year. The college with your support, was able to send more than 25 hampers home to families for Christmas who were struggling to get by. I know your donations really meant a lot and helped make a difference over the Christmas period.
This time last year, I thought I would be here for just 6 months, over 12 months later, I am still here, loving the Belridge journey and doing all I can to provide the best possible education for each and every child.
Thank you for your ongoing support – get ready for a bumper 2021!
Sharon Lyon
Principal
I wish to welcome all Year 7 students and their parents/caregivers to the Belridge Secondary College community. Currently the Year 7 enrolment numbers stand at 178, which is fantastic for the College. We have also had new students from Years 8 - 12 join the school community transferring from other schools, interstate and overseas. I also welcome these students to Belridge SC.
Active parent/caregiver involvement is paramount to the educational achievement and success of the student. I look forward to establishing and maintaining strong and productive working relationships with all our new families to help achieve positive and rewarding outcomes for their children.
School Dress Code
I spoke to the Year 8 students at their first assembly. I was impressed and proud on how smart all the students looked in their school uniforms. Belridge SC has a policy that “if you are not in school dress, you are not in the classroom”. I encourage all students to maintain this high level of appearance and to take pride in themselves and their school.
Year 7 Elevate Education Programme
On Monday 15 February all Year 7 students participated in workshops during Periods 1 & 2 conducted by Elevate Education. The workshops were titled Study Skills Kick Start and Junior Management Time and were presented by university students. The presenters established instant connections with the students and made the sessions fun, interactive and informative. I believe this programme will further assist the students in their transition to high school. A Year 7 parent evening was held on Tuesday 16 February from 6.30pm to 7.30pm facilitated by an Elevate Education presenter. Parents were presented with strategies to how best support their children both academically and socially.
Year 7 Welcome Barbeque - Wednesday 3 March
Invitations have been sent to attend the Year 7 Welcome Barbeque to be held on Wednesday 3 March from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. This is a great opportunity to meet staff and other parents/caregivers in an informal setting. We always have a fantastic roll up and it will be great to meet as many new families as possible. A brief information session will be held in the Auditorium prior to the barbeque at 4.30pm replacing the cancelled information meeting that was scheduled for Week 1.
Year 7 & 10 Immunisations
Immunisation forms for Years 7 & 10 (2021) were distributed and returned to the school late last year. Email reminders, with attachments, were sent at the start of this year. If you wish for your child to be immunised they need to be returned directly to the City of Joondalup.
For Year 7, the immunisations are conducted over two (2) rounds on the following dates:
- First round Monday 8 March;
- Second round of immunisations Monday 20 September
Year 10 immunisations will also be conducted on Monday 8 March.
Please note these dates in your diary as there are no catch-up sessions. Students absent on the day will need to get vaccinated through their local doctor.
Year 7 & 9 NAPLAN 2021
All Year 7 and 9 students will be participating in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in May. These are compulsory national tests. Parents will receive through the mail later this term information regarding this testing program. Students will prepare for these tests in their Mathematics and English classes, becoming familiar with the format, language, response types and time constraints. Student performance is important as success in NAPLAN 9 determines whether students need to sit the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (OLNA) in Year 10. The Western Australia Certificate of Education (WACE) – Years 11 & 12, requires students to achieve a prescribed minimum standard in literacy and numeracy to graduate. Students who achieve Band 8 in NAPLAN 9 for both literacy and numeracy are deemed to have met this minimum standard, so therefore will pre-qualify for OLNA and do not have to sit it. Students will have two opportunities in Year 10 to attain this minimum standard. Further opportunities are available in Years 11 & 12 if necessary. Achieving Band 8 in NAPLAN 9 removes the pressure and stress in Year 10. Whereby in the past some students may not have tried their best in NAPLAN, I encourage all students to recognise the importance of these tests. I ask parents and caregivers to discuss these tests with their children and impress upon them to do their best.
Mario Pisano
Vice Principal – Middle School
Years 7, 8 and 9
Welcome back to 2021 - it has been a smooth start to the school year and I have been impressed with the application of the vast majority of our senior students so far. There are a few matters that I need to highlight, so we can continue to have a successful year.
Year 12 ATAR Students
Wednesday Period 5
All Year 12 ATAR students (students with 3 or more ATAR courses) must stay at school to study in the library.
Year 12 Non-ATAR and Year 11
Students and parents are reminded that Period 5 on Wednesday is an important part of senior students' programs. Students should not make permanent arrangements to be out of school at this time, because attendance at organised talks, information sessions and study sessions is compulsory.
Also, Year 11 and 12 students who fall behind in their assessments will be required to attend catch-up sessions in the library. To benefit the Senior School, the library is not available to Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 students at lunchtime and Period 5 on Wednesdays.
Senior School students will be informed when they are required to stay. If they are not required, they can leave at the start of Break 2. If they want to stay, they need to work and study in the library. Once they leave the school, they cannot return that day.
Year 11 ATAR Students - Wednesday Period 5
All Year 11 ATAR students have been given a timetable by Mr Pisano when they need to stay at school Wednesday Perod 5 to study in PAC2. Also, Year 11 ATAR students were presented with seminars to improve their studying and time management skills. Feedback from most students was positive and they picked up some valuable tips and strategies.
Year 12 Students Sitting External Exams
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) offers special examination arrangements to candidates with permanent or temporary disabilities who sit the WACE examinations. Provided full medical reports are provided, SCSA may grant special arrangements for conditions such as:
- Vision or hearing impairment
- Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia or dysgraphia
- Medical conditions such as ADD/ADHD, illness, psychological, physical disability or fine motor disability
- Conditions such as diabetes.
Full details can be found at
https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/assessment/examinations/special-provisions
Applications must be submitted through the school to SCSA by Thursday 1 April.
If you have any questions or think your son/daugther may qualify, please contact Rob strickland at the school as soon as possible.
Year 11 Students
Please read the above. It is important that parents and students notify Mr Strickland if any of the above conditions apply to them.
Road Safety & Etiquette
It is a good time at the beginning of the school year to remind everyone about road safety. The speed limit on Gwendoline Drive is 40kmph and when traveling through the school drive to a crawl. Also, could I request that all parents (and I have made the same request of staff) use the correct ENTRY and EXIT driveways at the front of the school. Finally, please be aware that school buses need to have sufficient room to make their way through to the bus stops. Thank you all for your consideration.

Associate Principal - VET & OLNA News
The OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) is administered each year in March and September, to students in Years 10-12 who are yet to meet the minimum literacy and numeracy standards described in the Australian Core Skills Framework. Students can pre-qualify by achieving Bands 8-10 in Year 9 NAPLAN. For students sitting the OLNA, achieving Category 3 in each of numeracy, reading and writing assessments is a pre requisite for achieving the WACE at the end of year 12.
Round 1 of OLNA 2021 commences on Tuesday, March 2nd. As NAPLAN was cancelled last year, the School Curriculum and Standards Authority made the OLNA available to Year 9 students, allowing some the opportunity to pre-qualify for this year’s round. We wish all our students success with the assessments. See Round 1 schedule below:
Year 11 and 12 Parents with students new to VET and ADWPL - see 'Save the Date - Important Events' section to register for this event being held on Monday 8 March from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Associate Principal
Your Student Services Team for 2021
About Us
The Student Services Team support the health and wellbeing of students across the school. Both the Middle and the Senior School have a Head of Student Services who work in conjunction with the Year Coordinators, School Psychologist, Chaplain, School Community Nurses and teaching staff, to foster a positive, supportive environment for our students. Upcoming events to enhance this include:
- The Peer Support Program consists of a group of Year 10 students who have trained to become Peer Support Leaders. These leaders will be working with our new Year 7 students on a seven-week program, titled Strengthening our Connections.
- Harmony Week is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a week of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Did you know we have 52 different cultures represented at Belridge SC? This message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. We will be celebrating this week in Week 7 of this term. This will culminate with students and staff asked to wear orange on Friday 19th March in celebration of all Australians.
Attendance Matters!
Students at Belridge SC are expected to be attending 90% or more of the time in line with The School Education Act 1999. Research clearly shows that students must attend school on a regular basis to gain the maximum benefit from schooling and optimise their life opportunities. Missing just 1 day per fortnight (during an average 10-week term) would see a student just meeting these requirements, so please remind your child that every day counts.
Amazingly, missing 1 day per fortnight, when calculated out for an entire young person’s time in formal education would look something like this:
- 1 day per fortnight in a 10 week term, is equal to 5 days or 1 school week.
- Missing 1 school week per term, is equal to 1 month of school days missed in a calendar year.
- Continuing this on, missing one month of school a year for 12 years of schooling, is equal to an entire school year of education!!!
- Missing 1 day per week doubles these totals.
It is imperative that students attend as much as is humanly possible in order to enhance their chances of success.
Students must have a minimum of 90% attendance to hold their Good Standing.
Absence Procedures
Absences for part of the day, all day, or for several days, must be covered by a written explanation, SMS or a phone call from the parent or guardian. These notes must be dated and specify the reasons for the absence(s). They should be brought to school by the student either before (if known) or returning from a period of absence and handed to the Form Teacher or the Student Services Office. It is essential that students be at school by 8:40am each day. They must also ensure that they are prompt to all classes.

Dress Code
We ask that all students wear the correct uniform, which includes the appropriate school polo top and plain navy short, skirt, skort or paint of a modest length. Leggings, jeans and logos larger than a 20 cent piece and stripes are not permitted. Students arriving to school in incorrect uniform will be asked to borrow a Student Services uniform and change for the day.
Good Standing Policy
Belridge SC has a Good Standing Policy that applies to all students. A loss of Good Standing can be due to a variety of reasons related to attendance, behaviour of school work. Please refer to the Parent/Student Handbook located on the website.
Contact Details
As noted earlier, there are a number of staff on the Student Services Team who assist staff, students and families to have a successful and enjoyable time at Belridge SC.
The main point of contact for each year group is the Form Teacher or, for more urgent serious matters, the Year Coordinator. The role of the Year Coordinator is to oversee the personal development and wellbeing of the students in their care. This involves the policing of the school uniform and the counselling of students in terms of any personal, academic or school problems they may encounter. They also liaise between students, teachers and parents when the need arises. Additional duties involve attendance checks, year level assemblies, awareness of bullying prevention, year level functions, student recognition etc. If you have any questions about your child’s progress, health or the strategies the school implements to deal with issues that may arise, please feel free to contact the appropriate members of the team.

Community Health Nurses are members of the Student Services Team and provide a valuable service to various high schools across the region. We work on different days at each school and our availability at Belridge Secondary College can be accessed at Administration or through Student Services.
The nurses’ office is a place where students can drop in or make appointments to discuss health and wellbeing issues. Some of the health issues that young people present with include; physical health concerns, infection and injuries, mental health, relationship problems and support, sexual health, nutrition and alcohol and other drugs.
Students may independently seek assistance from the Community Health Nurse, but can also be referred by parents and staff. If you would like to refer your child to the Community Health nurse, please do not hesitate to contact us through the school reception.
Most importantly, if you have a student at Belridge who has an ongoing medical concern, such as Anaphylaxis, Allergies, Asthma, Diabetes or any other diagnosis that may impact on their school life, please ensure that the school is informed and the necessary forms are completed every new school year to ensure that we are aware and can administer the appropriate treatment, if required. This is especially important where there has been a change to the care required.
The links to action plans for diabetes, asthma, allergies and anaphylaxis are below. If you have not done so already, please print the relevant action plan and complete it, with the assistance of your medical professional if appropriate, and provide the school with a copy.

Home Economics
Welcome to Home Economics for 2021. What a great start to the year we have had. Firstly, we must congratulate our Cert II students for their efforts in catering the PAC opening last Monday night. Our students prepared an array of gourmet sandwiches, arancini, quiches and our world famous sausage rolls. The commemorative BSC short bread biscuit was a highlight amongst the guests and the service provided was exceptional.
Our lower school and ESC cooking classes are well underway with some great food coming out of the kitchens daily. Pizza, stir-fries and delicious salads just to name a few. All home economic students must remember to provide their own container to take away what they cook. We compost all of our food scraps daily and want to continue our sustainable efforts by reducing our reliance on single use plastics.
Lastly, we would like to thank our friends at Feed It Forward for their donation of fresh fruit and vegetables. Feed it Forward is a network of people who are devoted to supporting their communities and helping those in need. It is also about protecting our environment and saving so much food from landfill. More than 90% of the food that is intercepted, is delivered to daycares, churches, schools, soup kitchens, shelters and more. Partnering with Second Bite, a charitable organisation aligned with Coles, Feed It Forward now has over 210 volunteers and collects food from 64 different supermarkets across Perth. We really appreciate their support and if you are a business wanting to become a donor partner to this incredible initiative, head to Facebook or email feeditforwardinc@gmail.com

Belridge Cricket team extinguish the Western Fury!
A number of lucky Belridge cricket students were selected to play at the WACA against the State Women’s cricket team, The Western Fury, on Wednesday 10 February. The game was organised as a practice match for the Fury prior to travelling to Tasmania to play in the WNCL (Women’s National Cricket League).
The Fury won the toss and elected to bat first. Both their openers batted extremely well, against some solid bowling from our two bowlers Daniel Corry and Harrison Brice, putting on a big 100 run partnership until we eventually got a breakthrough. The Fury were building a formidable target as they reached 2-180 in the 34th over. Erin Martin (Year 9) and Breanna Giandzi (Year 11) had the opportunity to bowl to some of their cricketing idols, which was a really great experience for them both. Our last 15 overs were really tidy, led by Oskar Le Blanc (3 wickets), Zac Caporn (1 wicket) and Kai Orr (1 wicket). The Fury finished 9-255 after 50 overs.
In response, Belridge had a wobbly start losing two early wickets within the first 10 overs. Daniel Corry and Riley Gillespie steadied the ship and put on a nice partnership before both losing their wicket before the first drinks break. Kai Orr (70 runs) and Matt Carroll (57 runs) batted superbly and put Belridge back into contention to win the match with a big 100 run partnership. Unfortunately, both batsman fell in quick succession which put the tail enders under pressure to finish the game. With 24 balls remaining in the match Belridge needed 34 runs with 2 wickets in hand. Enter Oskar Le Blanc. ‘The Finisher’, as he is more affectionately known now, came in and blundered the attack, catapulting Belridge to a nail biting win with 3 balls remaining in the game.
It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to play against quality opposition at the home of cricket. We thank the Fury for the invitation to play them. A huge thank you to all our students who represented Belridge proudly once again.

Uniform Supplies
We wish to update you on the current position regarding the supply of uniforms to our school.
Due to the location of where uniforms are produced and the impact of extended lockdowns due to COVID 19, the uniform shop has been experiencing shipping delays due to reduced operational productivity of worldwide ports and the availability of containers.
If there are any unforeseen delays that may affect stock holding for the 'back to school' selling period, the uniform shop may find it necessary to ration or restrict the number of items initially supplied in some products. This measure is to ensure that uniforms are available to all students until further stocks arrive.
We have been assured that the uniform suppliers are closely monitoring production and deliveries and are confident that uniforms will be available for the new school year.
Should the position change, we will notify you as soon as we are made aware.
