The end of the school year always comes around very quickly. It is a time of reflection, celebration and planning for the following year. 2019 has been a very successful year with many individual student achievements - excursions/incursions, camps, interstate trips, whole school events, balls and river cruises, just to name a few. We always work on an improvement model, so staff have been busy ensuring the best start to 2020 by reflecting on teaching programs and sourcing new ideas and innovations.
Over the last week, I have had a pleasure of attending many of our partner primary schools' graduation events. I wish to acknowledge the work they do in preparing their students for their transition to secondary education. Last week, we formally welcomed the Class of 2025 (the 2020 Year 7 students) on their Orientation Day. It was fantastic to see just over 200 keen students ready to start their secondary journey and become part of our school. It was also great to meet so many new parents who have also joined the Belridge community and the commencement of a 6-year partnership.
With the end of a year comes announcements of retirements. It is with mixed emotions that we bid farewell to Greg Carey (Manager of Corporate Services – 45 years), Carol Monks (Administration – 26 years) and Richard Gazey (Science teacher – 43 years). All three are long serving members of the school. We thank them for their dedicated years of service to the public education of our students and wish them the best in their retirements. We are all extremely jealous!
We are also saying goodbye to a number of staff who have secured positions in other schools for 2020. We thank them for their commitment, dedication and care of our students and wish them the best in their new positions:
Heath Kutzer – Mathematics
Corina Fordham – Mathematics
Lesley Colley – Mathematics
Cameron James – Mathematics
Bruce McInnes - Mathematics
Jemma Whelan – HASS
Lisa Pignatiello – Art
Josh Hollows – Health & Physical Education
Anna Dyer, Merv Dyer and Suzanne Manning are taking 12 months leave. We wish them an enjoyable and relaxing year and look forward to welcoming them back in 2021.
The Minister of Education has implemented a total ban in all public schools on the use of electronic devices commencing in 2020. The College has drafted a school policy to align with the directive from the Minister. Please refer to the policy later in this newsletter. This will take effect from Monday 3rd February 2020. Students have been reminded of this change during their weekly year assemblies. We hope to have a smooth transition to this new policy.
The college’s substantive Principal, Melesha Sands, has had her secondment in head office as the Director of Leadership, Innovation & Strategy extended by 6 months. I have been acting in Melesha’s absence this past 6 months. Due to Public Sector Standards, 6 months is the longest someone can act in a position without a selection process taking place. It is for this reason that Jim Webb (Regional Executive Director) has appointed Sharon Lyon to the role of Acting Principal for Semester 1, 2020. Sharon is currently the Deputy Principal at Ashdale Secondary College. The college welcomes Sharon to the position as Acting Principal and I am sure she will be a good addition. I wish to thank everyone for their support during Semester 2.
We look forward to 2020 and I hope that your 2019 has been fulfilling. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Scott Amy
Chairperson
Belridge Secondary College Board
It has been with great pleasure that I have been able to work with the Administration Team for this semester as Deputy Principal. Next year, I will return to Student Services as the Head of Middle School.
This term has been extremely busy, led by the transition of 200 Year 6 students. The term started with the half day transitions days with all our partner primary schools, culminating on Tuesday the 10th December with just over 200 students spending the day familiarising themsleves with their new school and the amazing staff of Belridge SC.
Students participated in a range of activities across the day from Home Economics to Design and Technology, forging new friendships, which can only further develop in the next 6 years.
Belridge SC prides itself in the programs we put together to support our transitioning students, including Peer Support. We had over 40 Belridge SC students in Year 9 and Year 10 assist throughout the day in making our newest students feel comfortable and supported. The day was a huge success thanks to the efforts of Jodie Grieve (Year 7 Year Coordinator 2020) and Phil Leenman (School Chaplain) along with our staff who ran activities and acted as tour guides to our new families.
Semester 2 Reports
Middle School reports (Years 7-10) will be emailed to parents/caregivers on Tuesday 17th December. I encourage parents and students to discuss this together, celebrate the achievement of goals and set new goals for 2020.
School resumes for students on Monday 3rd February and it is hoped that each student has a goal of 90%+ attendance, as attendance at school is clearly linked to school achievement. Please consider this when making holiday plans. Belridge SC continues to make progress to improve student attendance and we thank our College community for supporting us with this.
I also ask parents to support the new Department of Education directive on the Use of Mobile Phones for 2020. The Department of Education "does not permit student use of mobile phones in public schools, unless for medical or teacher directed educational purposes.” Belridge SC students will therefore need to have their phones switched off and out of sight from the time they arrive at school to the end of the school day.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break and I look forward to seeing everyone back in 2020.
Bridgid Lafferty
Acting Deputy Principal - Middle School
Vice Principal - Years 10, 11 and 12
Year 12 students had their final WACE exam on Thursday 19 November. Again our students sat their exams at Woodvale and Prendiville Colleges. We took precautions to make sure students were familiar with the environment. Hal Spedding and myself took students to the exam venues. There, they were given a tour of the school, shown the exam room, toilets and so on. We also had a Belridge staff member present at the start of each exam with spare equipment and identification forms. The whole exercise went very smoothly. I now wish all our Year 12’s the best in their future endeavours.
Special exam arrangements for Year 12 in 2021
Students in Year 12, 2021 and their parents need to read this information carefully.
Candidates who have a permanent or temporary disability, illness and/or specific learning disability that could disadvantage them in demonstrating their knowledge, skills and understandings in standard assessments may apply to the School Curriculum and Standards Authority to sit WACE examinations under special arrangements. Applications can be made for the written and/or practical examinations. Applications must be made by the school. The Authority will notify the school and candidate of the decision.
The granting of special examination arrangements is not automatic, but takes into account medical and/or psychometric evidence plus supporting school-based information related to the candidate’s ability to access the examination. The role of special examination arrangements is to provide reasonable access to an examination. Schools should ensure that they have placed on record all current medical/psychological documents that relate to their decision to trial special arrangements for the student. Each application is considered individually, with decisions based on the nature of each examination to be sat by the candidate.
There are five sections:
Section A | Student details - to be completed by student |
Section B | Provisions requested - to be completed by the school and the student |
Section C | School case coordination - to be completed by the school and the student |
Section D | Supporting information - relevant sections to be completed by the school, psychologist, occupational therapist |
Section E | Medical evidence - to be completed by a medical practitioner/registered health professional (if applicable) |
Section F | Student’s declaration and principal’s declaration - to be completed by all applicants. |
N.B. Providing evidence for Sections D and E is the
responsibility of the student and parent.
Closing date for applications is 1 April 2021, but the process is long and complicated and needs to be started early in Term 1. If you think your son or daughter is eligible please contact me at the school on 9408 8000.
Year 11
The Year 11 students have also completed their final exams and work placements. On their final day, Monday 23 November, students returned to school to hand in their Workplace Learning logbooks and go through their exams with their teachers. Also, students that were not up to date in their certificate courses were sent letters to return to school to catch up.
Years 10 and 11 OLNA
Students moving into Years 11 and 12 and who have not yet achieved OLNA should take some time over the break to prepare for the March round of OLNA. Students have been given access to OLNA help via Connect. Please contact Mr Notarpietro if you need assistance.
2021 Years 11 and 12
Arrangements for Period 5 Wednesdays
It is a timely reminder for the parents of all Year 11 and 12 students that Wednesday period 5 is an important period on the timetable and that students should not make arrangements to use the period for non-school activities, such as work.
Year 12 ATAR students will be required every Wednesday Period 5, and all other Senior School students will need to attend where meetings and information-giving sessions are organised. Also, students in Years 11 and 12 that do not meet deadlines for assessments, or are not up to date with their certificate courses, will be required to attend period 5 Wednesday until they complete this work.
Mr Strickland will contact parents of students behind in their courses and Mr Notarpietro will do the same for certificate students. Failure to attend when required may result in loss of good standing.
Finally, I hope all Year 10 and 11 students have a good break and return refreshed for a great 2020.
Mobile Phone Use
A reminder to all students that due to the new government regulations, students will not be permitted to use mobile phones at the school in 2021. The rule is mobiles phones must be switched off and out of sight from the time students enter the school grounds, until they are released from class at the end of the day. Please discuss this again at home, so we don't start the school year with a spate of phone confiscations - thank you.
… one Final Message
May I request that staff, parents and students be careful on the roads around the college. Students need to be extra careful whilst crossing the road when using mobile phones and need to remember to look right, then left and then right again. Students need to take extra care crossing the exit from the main school car park as they are obscured from the vision of drivers by a solid wall, and also when crossing Ocean Reef Road, where the speed limit is 70kph. The safest option is using the lights or crossing attendants.

Planning Day
On Wednesday 4th December various members of the Student Service Team, met to review the year that was and plan for 2020. It was a very productive day and I am excited to see initiatives that were discussed will be implemented next year.
Behaviour and Attendance
As always, our ‘big ticket items’ revolve around behaviour and attendance. This year, there was an overall significant improvement in behaviour. Focussing on the role of a student within the classroom and adhering to the expectations of the Belridge Secondary College community, will set them up to be positive, contributing members of society. Our attendance for the second semester is a highlight, as it is the best that it has been in a number of years. I would take this time to remind parents/caregivers that wherever possible, sending your young person to school every day, enables them to have the best chance at success going forward. Remember, the Education Department benchmark is students to be attending 90% or more of the time.
Rewards Day and End of Term Reward Prize
This year, we are excited to announce that students who have achieved an attendance rate of 90% or higher and have had exemplary behaviour will be invited to one of two reward days. Students will enjoy the fun of going to the movies as a Year 7 or 8, or heading to Outback Splash as a Year 9 or 10. Congratulations to the more than 470 students that have been invited from across these year groups.
Along with this, we will have our final prize draw for the year at the end of the term. This is always a great prize and previous winners have enjoyed iPads, bicycles, portable speakers and hundreds of dollars worth of entertainment vouchers for places like the movies and Adventure World. Remember, the way to be in the draw is to be doing the right thing. Students receiving Student of the Month nominations, special awards, or have an attendance of 99% or 100% will all be placed in the draw for this term’s prize.
Mobile Phone Policy
Please be aware that in 2020, the Education Department’s Mobile Phone Policy will change the landscape of our school slightly, where students will not be able to use their mobile phones upon arriving on the school grounds. It must remain switched off and out of sight for the entire day. Please talk with your young person about this change to prevent any difficulties at the beginning of 2020.
Old/Unwanted Uniforms
Thank You
I’d like to take this time to thank all of the members of the Student Services Team for their dedication and support for students, their families and the wider community. The work that you do is invaluable. I’d like to thank several members specifically for the work they have done and wish them well in the next phase of their careers.
Carolyn Wright finishes as Inclusive Education and Learning Support Co-ordinator. She has been very valuable in this space over a number of years, supporting students with additional needs, families and staff. She has also been the EA Coordinator, making sure that these students receive the support they need within the classroom. Thank you Carolyn.
Lisa Pignatiello, Year 7 Co-Ordinator, has done a marvellous job in having the Year 7 students come into their first year of high school so successfully. The transition planning and the support she has provided to students and families has been amazing.
Heather Currie, Year 9 Co-Ordinator leaves the Student Services Team to become the Head of Arts at BSC. Her tireless efforts have seen the Year 9’s develop into a great group of young people. Heather has re-invigorated the Year Co-ordinator role with new initiatives like the ‘Big Project’ and C8 Camp.
Peter Papasergio stepped into the fray as the Head of Student Services (HoSS) for the Middle School part way through Term 3 when Melesha Sands (Principal) was seconded to do some big work for the Director General at Statewide Services. Peter’s time in the HoSS seat was greatly appreciated and he managed that area exceptionally well. Peter, unfortunately, then required knee surgery, ruling him out for the rest of the year.
Joel Bond has had a massive year. Starting the year as the Year 12 Co-ordinator, which included managing the school ball and graduation and ended finishing up as the stand-in HoSS for Middle School. Joel has taken on this role with great passion and diligence and we have been very lucky for him to have stepped into the fray.
We welcome a number of staff into the Student Services Team for 2020 and they will be acknowledged at the beginning of the next academic year.
Finally, I’d like to thank the parents/caregivers that have had any involvement through Student Services, for their willingness to support their young person in their journey through school. The ability to communicate between home and school has been a highlight and we are grateful for all the support we have received. I wish the entire Belridge Secondary College community a safe and happy holiday break, and I look forward to working with you again in 2020.

Fashion Design
The year is coming to a close and I would to take this opportunity to thank Ms Hill and all the fashion students for all their hard work in 2019.
We have had some amazing highlights, such as the visit from Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson, the Year 10, 11 and 12 students successfully competing at the APEX teenage Fashion Awards with Bonnie Kerslake chosen to represent WA at the national final, plus our appearance on Channel 9 Today morning program to showcase the beautiful wearable art created by so many of our talented students.
I am taking a years leave in 2020, where I hope to dive into many of my own creative projects to develop new techniques that I can pass on to our fashion students. I will be leaving the classes in the capable hands of Ms Hill and Mrs Wright and I wish you all a safe holiday and a fabulous year next year.

ABCN Innovate with KPMG
Twenty Year 7 STEM enthusiasts were privileged to spend five weeks working beside KPMG volunteers, experts in their chosen STEM field, through the highly successful Innovate Program organised and offered to our school by ABCN.
Students were exposed to: Problem Solving and Design using Science; Design Thinking to creatively innovate a Digital Design Solution to a problem using Technology; Critical thinking and innovation using Engineering to problem solve; and use Mathematical principles and concepts of patterns and multiplication to decode challenging problems. Mentors from KPMG guided students through each session developing team collaboration and listening techniques within the corporate environment of their technological and innovative work space in Perth CBD.
All students improved their problem solving skills and gained a more informed understanding of how STEM is used in today’s workforce. Many enquired about the possibility of the program continuing through to next year with one student stating “Thank you for giving me one of the best experiences of my life.”
Blackout Poetry
Year 10 English students have been studying poetry all term and we have finished it up with some fun ‘blackout poetry’. Students recycled the pages from old novels and non-fiction books and used the words on the page to create some incredible poems. Take a look!

Chemistry Explosions Ignite Science Passion in Students
Academic Enrichment students recently visited ECU Joondalup for a Race Around the Campus followed by an Explosive Chemistry Show, presented by Mr Tim Harrison (Bristol ChemLabs Fellow and Science Communicator) Bristol University, UK and his ECU Chemistry team. They delivered an exciting live science show and investigated the properties of various gases; nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen and methane, through the use of spectacular demonstrations such as the liquid nitrogen shower, whoosh bottle, disappearing styrofoam and exploding hydrogen balloons. Students were enthused, educated and amazed for the entire afternoon.

Belridge Botnets participate in Perth vs Canberra ‘Capture the Flag’ Cyber Challenge
Year 10 Advanced Computing students William Johnstone, Cameron Spence and Oscar Longworth-Baker participated in the PeCan cyber challenge on the first weekend of Term 3 holidays. PeCan is a National ‘Capture the Flag’ (CTF) challenge hosted by Edith Cowan University in conjunction with the Australian Signals Directorate. On the Saturday, staff and mentors at ECU taught the necessary cyber security skills. The following day, our students used these skills by participating in a real-time cyber security challenge against teams from Canberra. These challenges included activities related to software and web exploitation, reverse engineering, SQL injections and steganography. This ‘ethical hacking’ event saw Perth victorious over Canberra.

Year 9’s Helping Santa
Some of our Year 9 students finished the term on a highly festive note – connecting their imaginations with our community. Year 1 students at Davallia Primary School wrote letters to Father Christmas which several classes of Year 9 students received, courtesy of Mikaela Shirley. Students posed as Santa, or his elves, and attentively replied to each individual letter.
The joy, excitement and happiness during this activity was evident! Our students were completely engrossed; writing with care, creativity and authenticity. They even wanted to go to the Primary School to watch the Year One's open the letters! Many thanks to Kerry Clarke and Suzanne Manning whose Year 9 students helped reply to the letters too.

Year 10 Netball Carnival
On Monday the 2nd of December and Tuesday 3rd of December the Belridge Netball Academy Year 10 students attended a two-day netball carnival at Herb Graham Recreation centre.
Day one saw the girls play four games throughout the day against teams from John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School and St Philips College who were on tour in Perth from Alice Springs. The girls finished the day with 3 wins and 1 loss, with most games being decided by less than 5 goals.
Day two of competition saw Swan Valley ACS also attend along with both St Philips and John Septimus Roe ACS returning. The day started off with a round robin competition which involved 4 games and 1 bye round for each team. After the round robin ended, Belridge had won two games against both Swan Valley ACS teams and had narrow losses to the St Philips team and the John Septimus Roe team.
The day finished with a finals play-off match. Belridge was in the 3v4 play-off match against John Septimus Roe ACS. It was a close game throughout, with at half time the score being 7 goals all to both teams. The second half started off with both teams going goal for goal. Belridge then broke out to the lead through strong defensive efforts and calm play in attack to end the day with a win and finish in 3rd place overall.
Congratulations to the following students who received Best Player of the Match in games throughout the round robin games: Jordan Blee, Mahalia Woolterton, Katana Montgomery and Ava Martin. It was a fantastic two days where the girls had the opportunity to apply the skills, tactics and strategies they have learnt throughout the year in a competitive setting where every game was a close match.

Belridge's Rising Star ... First WA, next the world!
Cooper Connolly, a Year 10 specialist cricket program student, is already playing men three years above him and recently had an exceptional tournament taking 9 wickets and the 4th leading run scorer in the tournament in the recent U19's national championship, where he captained the U17's Australian Team. Cooper has been picked for the Australian under 19’s World Cup Team that competes early next year. Congratulations Cooper – Belridge SC will be watching your progress closely.
It's been a busy fews weeks in which the Belridge community has bid farewell to three long standing and respected members of staff, who between them have worked for a total of 115 years in public service!
A sad farewell was bid to our Manager of Corporate Services, Greg Carey, after 48 years in public service on Friday 6 December. Greg's time commenced at the Metropolitan Water Board in 1971. He then moved onto the Department of Education in 1974, working at schools in Scarborough, Wanneroo, Cyril Jackson and Craigie SHS. The last 15 years have been here at Belridge SC with Greg keeping everything ship-shape and in order. Thank you for all your hard work Greg - you will be missed by many.
Carol Monks, our long standing School Officer and 'heart of the engine room', is retiring after 26 years with Department of Education. Carol worked for Padbury SHS, Craigie SHS and eventually gained permanency at Belridge SC in 1999. Carol is known fondly across the school as the 'Font of all knowledge' and her knowledge and hard work contributed to the smooth running of the front office. Her caring nature and great sense of humour will be deeply missed by the administration team and across the school.
Richard Gazey, Science Teacher, commenced his time as a teacher in 1977 at Carnamah DHS and worked for several schools spanning across the Metropolitan area, and also country, before Belridge was lucky enough to have him arrive at our door in 2009. Richard's professionalism and sense of humour will be missed very much.
Greg, Carol and Richard have earned a very well-deserved retirement between them and we wish you all a long, healthy and happy time going forward into your next chapter.

Don't forget to make an appointment for a fitting and avoid the long queues at the uniform shop in January. The uniform shop is also offering layby to assist in spreading the cost of purchases.
