Course selection and subject counselling has been finalised for students entering Year 11 and 12 in 2022. This process now continues for students entering Year 9 and 10. The College has been very creative in updating our course structures across Year 9 and 10 to ensure students have access to new courses and programs aligned to career pathways of the future.
During week 3 we held our whole school assemblies in which we recognised a large number of students for both their academic achievement and attendance. It was really great to see so many of them recognised in this forum. A particular stand out was our Year 9 cohort with the largest number of certificates handed out. Certificates for effort will be handed out at year assemblies over the coming weeks.
Year 12s are now on the home straight, with their learning journey at Belridge close to the end. With the current pandemic situation in the eastern states, I would like to assure parents that we have a full Connected Learning Plan in place to support our students and ensure they are not disadvantaged at this vital stage of their learning. If WA was to enter a lockdown during this time, full details of the plan and learning programs will be shared with parents and students through Connect. This plan covers all students from Year 7 to 12. Details on graduation and final week arrangements will be sent out shortly.
Enrolments for 2022 are coming in thick and fast, we have limited places in our specialist programs. If you have not already enrolled your child for 2022, please submit your application forms to the Administration Office ASAP to avoid disappointment.
A quick reminder that Friday 13th August is a Staff Development Day (SDD). There will be no students onsite on this day. Our SDD’s are a crucial part of our Professional Learning Program, which ensures our teachers are best equipped both inside and outside of the classroom.
We also have a number of extracurricular events occurring this term that we are looking forward to, these include Book Week, Science Week, Wear it Purple Day and the Opening of the Belridge Bindi Bindi Garden.
Save the Date! On Friday 5th November Belridge SC will be celebrating its 30th Birthday (1991-2021). As part of our birthday celebrations, we will have a number of events taking place for you to enjoy on the evening. This will include food trucks, live music and dance performances, a gallery of memorabilia for you to view and reminisce, raffles, prize draws and merchandise to commemorate the event. Anybody who has been connected with Belridge over the 30 Years is welcome to attend. Invitations will be posted on our Website and Facebook. So spread the word! I hope to see you there to celebrate this special event.
A quick reminder if you have not already, please follow us on Facebook @BelridgeSC. This is one way we share some of the great things that are happing at the college on a regular basis, along with using it as a forum to send out reminders for upcoming events.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

Save the Date - 30th Anniversary
Did you know that Belridge Secondary College is 30 years old?
The college will be acknowledging this milestone with a 30th Anniversary celebration on Friday 5 November from 5pm to 8pm in what promises to be a fun-filled community event. The event is planned to be open to former staff and students also. Details will be advertised through the newsletter, website and social media shortly.
If you know anyone who was a former student at Belridge SC, please ask them to contact nicola.harris@education.wa.edu.au
Vice Principal - Years 7, 8 and 9
Semester 2 Timetables
All students have received their Semester 2 timetables. Year 7 & 8 students have been rotated through their electives. Some Year 7 – 10 students have had adjustments made to their MESH classes. Students should now be in classes that better suit their academic level.
Enrolments 2022
Belridge SC is currently accepting Year 7 enrolments for 2022. Enrolment packages have now been distributed to all of our partner primary schools. Enrolment packages are also available from reception. We require enrolment applications returned as soon as possible to allow sufficient planning time for 2021. Returned enrolment applications should also contain all necessary documentation. This includes a copy of the full birth certificate, two proofs of address (current rates notice or current lease agreement and a utilities bill or drivers licence), immunisation records and any applicable Family Court Orders. Should you have any concerns on the enrolment process, please contact reception on 9408 8000.
School Sickness Procedures
A quick reminder to parents/caregivers of the school protocols should a child fall ill during the day. During the class time, the class teacher will make an assessment and send the child to the nurse or Student Services. If the child feels ill during a break time, they are to make their own way to the nurse or Student Services. The school will then contact the parent/caregiver if required. Students are not to contact their parents/caregivers directly to be picked up because they are not feeling
well.
Mario Pisano
Vice Principal Middle School
Vice Principal - Years 10, 11 and 12
We have had a great start to Term 3, and all Year 12s are excited about their final full semester of schooling. All Year 12 ATAR students received their predicted ATAR score during week one of this term.
It was great to meet many of the current Year 10 parents during Upper School subject selection meetings and some of the Year 12 parents throughout ATAR support review meetings. Parent and family support and encouragement is essential in helping our students to achieve their best at school.
AN IMPORTANT TIME FOR ALL STUDENTS
Year 12 Students
Year 12 students should be striving for the best results possible in order to be competitive for university or training entry. It is important that after nearly 12 years of schooling, students strive to do their best when the end goal is in sight. All students, but especially those that have to sit exams, should have a study plan and use the ‘Smart Study’ tips given to them by their teachers. The ATAR students need to take into account the WACE exam scheduling when planning their study. All ATAR students received their 2021 WACE exam timetable during week one of this term and a study plan template is available to download on ATAR Class Connect page.
Free Year 12 ATAR Revision Classes
AT BELRIDGE SECONDARY COLLEGE: External tutors will run afterschool ATAR revision classes for most of the ATAR courses during Week 6 to 9 in Term 3 at Belridge Secondary College. These revision classes will be very important to boost student results and they will be free of charge to our Year 12 students. In addition to that, some of our BSC staff will be running afterschool classes to support our Year 12s.
AT EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY: ECU also runs free study sessions at the Joondalup Campus during the first week of the next school holidays. At the end of each four-hour session, the students will be given a set of comprehensive revision notes for free. This would be great preparation for Year 12s exams. Students need to sign up on-line.
Studiosity Study Assistance
Students should be making full use of the Studiosity Tutor website, which is free to use.
University Applications
If you wish to attend university in 2022, apply using TISCOnline at www.tisc.edu.au.
There is no fee to apply through TISC this year.
Year 11 Students
Year 11 students should now be aware of what is required to succeed in Senior School. The key element is regular attendance. Any student who has a less than 90% attendance is at serious risk of falling behind in their studies. Also, any Year 11 student that falls behind in their assessment work is required to remain at school each Wednesday, during period 5, to complete their work. Students should not make other arrangements, such as part-time work, during this period. If we require students for meetings or to complete work as above, they are expected to be available.
ALL SENIOR STUDENTS
School Planners
All students should be using their planners to record their homework and plan to complete all assessment items. Often teachers write key messages for parents in the planners, so it would be appreciated if parents could check these planners as often as possible.
Timetabling for 2022
It is the time of the year when class lists for 2022 are being created and checked. All students should be striving to do their best and demonstrate to their teachers their true potential.
Year 10, 11 and 12 Students
The second round of the OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) commences on Monday 30 August. It is important that students attend their tests and do their best - the tests are important for students to progress through Years 11 and 12. OLNA must be achieved to get a WACE.
Road Safety
It is a timely reminder to all to be careful on the roads. It is highly recommended that students cross Ocean Reef Road with the assistance of the crossing attendants. The speed limit on this road is 70kmh, and heading west past the school there is a blind corner. Also, students riding bikes should be wearing helmets and need to look both ways when exiting the shopping centre car parks. We ask all parents to take great care when driving near the school during starting and closing times and when picking up and dropping off students.
Here’s wishing all students a safe and successful Terms 3 and 4.

Kindness Initiative
As a school we value “Respect”, “Respecting Yourself, Respecting Others and Respect the Space”
Respecting Others: is building respectful relationships, as well as treating others with consideration and kindness.
Imagine that each and every person at Belridge is part of a puzzle, a puzzle that when put together becomes Belridge Secondary College. Each puzzle piece is different, different shapes, different colours but all the same size. Each piece being just as important as the next, the puzzle is not complete if we are not working together and to work together, we need to be kind to each other.
Kindness; the quality of being friendly, considerate and accepting. |
The theme across the whole school, both staff and students for this semester is KINDNESS. Looking at small acts of kindness to help improve our mood, relationships, sense of belonging and overall environment.
The impact that kindness can have on an individual is remarkable. Think about a time someone has been kind to you, whether it was a family member, friend or complete stranger, that small act of kindness, gives you a warm or happy feeling.
A.D Williams, an American Football player once said, “Imagine what 7 billion humans could accomplish if we loved and respected each other”. Just imagine ...
Imagine if there were no rumours. Imagine if there was no comparison. If everyone was running their own race, but cheering for all others at the same time. |
What we can all do is start with ourselves. Start with yourself. Choose to lift others up. Choose to set an example, the example of kindness and respect. The example of compassion and understanding.
There’s a quote that says, “no matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you believe you are, how you treat people, ultimately tells all”.
Who you are is far more important than what you have. Who you are, is measured by how you make others feel. Be kind to each other. In a world where you can be anything, be kind.
Student Services will be promoting and rewarding students and staff for their Kindness in the school community. Acknowledge others for their Kindness and spreading a positive atmosphere through the school.
This all starts with YOU.
Attendance Matters!
There are many reasons why attendance at school is important. It is not just about your academic success, but helps you develop skills for communication, resilience, commitment and team work. Many of you may be looking for part time jobs or already have a part time job, and as you are moving to graduating high school or alternative education pathways, your communication, commitment and attendance are important factors for TAFE, UNI, or the workplace. Regular attendance at school will prepare you for this, and has proven to improve job prospects, health and well-being and success in life.
We understand that for some students there are circumstances that hinder your attendance at school and the Student Services team can support you to overcome some of these challenges. This is why we asked for your voice in our Attendance Survey.
What can we do as a school to encourage you to attend more often? What supports or incentives do you need?
It is important for us to hear from you. We can put plans in place, but it is your ideas that will have the biggest impact.
Thank you to all students for completing the survey and providing us with this information. We will be looking towards targeting attendance for the second half of Term 3. There will be positive incentives and rewards for students with high attendance and improved attendance rates.

The Beauty of Ningaloo
Congratulations to Maddy Constable (Year 12) whose entry to the Mandurah Wearable Art competition 2021 has been accepted. This competition is open to local, national and international artists. Maddy will be competing on August 28 in the Youth category - Good Luck!
ARTIST STATEMENT:
A family trip to Ningaloo Reef was the inspiration for this garment. The breathtaking colours of the fish and the reef that I saw while snorkelling, form the main components of the design.
The large pleated skirt with many different shades of blue represent the varying depths of the ocean and this is awash with schools of fish swimming through the seaweed.
The corset style bodice displays the beautiful blue skies on a sunny day with a hovering cloud sitting above as a headdress.
Birds circle the sky.
METHOD AND MATERIALS:
A variety of textile art techniques were used to create this design. Many fabrics have been cut and then distressed with a candle to create textured and contorted forms. Each piece was individually attached using free-hand machine embroidery technique.
Screen-printed fish were further enhanced with fabric overlays. The birds were hand crafted with papier-maché and covered with feathers .

International Chemistry Quiz
On the 29th of July, Belridge Secondary College Academic Extension Students participated in the annual International Chemistry Quiz that is run by the Royal Australian Chemistry Institute.
The International Chemistry Quiz provides a major focus for secondary school students on the relevance of chemistry in an exciting and stimulating way. The Chemistry Quiz is truly an international competition with papers translated into seven different languages. The Quiz attracts students throughout Australia and 20 other countries around the world, including India, Germany and China.
The Quiz aims to promote interest in chemistry and the role of chemists in our society. It is not a nationwide assessment of chemistry knowledge, but rather an opportunity to promote chemistry and for teachers to gauge the understanding their students have of the subject.
This was an excellent opportunity that allowed Academic Science students from year 7, 8 and 9 to compare their chemistry knowledge with thousands of other students from all over Australia and selected countries around the world. The Belridge Secondary College community is eagerly awaiting our students’ results.

Year 10 Financial, Office and Consumer Skills
ABCN Interview to Impress
Students from the Year 10 Financial, Office and Consumer Skills class were given the unique opportunity to attend an “Interview 2 Impress” workshop on 24th June, which is conducted by the Australian Business Network, in conjunction with Accenture. ABCN work with schools in order to give students the opportunity to engage with local businesses by offering workshops whereby the students are mentored by business people. In this case, the interview process was conducted at Accenture.
Students were guided through a series of activities conducted by mentors from Accenture employees. These included warm-up activities, which involved having the students introduce their mentors to the rest of the group, as well as fun improvisation skills and teamwork. They were then taught the C (Context) A (Action) R (Result) technique which they applied to the interview situation. Students were then interviewed by their mentors in a mock interview situation and given feedback on their performance.
The following is an account of the excursion by one of our attendees Blake Barisani:
"On this excursion we learnt how to properly conduct ourselves in an interview, how to improvise in an interview setting and how to shake hands in an effective and friendly way. I also learnt how to appear confident during an interview and got constructive feedback on my conduct during the mock interview.
Accenture is an international consulting and data processing firm, employing over 500,000 people across the world. They are a fortune 500 company and earned $44.33 billion in revenue last year. My main mentors were two Frenchmen, Alain and Francois. They were excellent mentors and truly made me feel welcome at Accenture.
At the end of the day the mentors held a Q&A to answer any of our questions, providing greater insight into each of their lives and the company itself. Overall my experience with Accenture and the “Interview to Impress” program was very positive. I would recommend it to any student with aspirations into the world of business." - Blake Barisani
Students returned from the excursion very excited and positive about their experience from the workshop. ABCN also gave feedback on the success of the workshop and sent the following information regarding the success of the day:
"Thank you for bringing such an engaged group of students. They were so positive and inspired at the end of the session with the mentors from Accenture." - ABCN
As part of the “Interview 2 Impress” program, students completed an evaluation at the final session. A summary of these results and some of their comments are included below:
The following are summarised student response results, which demonstrate improvement from start of the program to end. (Note the rating scale is a 1 – 7 measure with 1 being lowest through to 7 being highest rating – ie 5 – 7 is agree to strongly agree.) These results demonstrate that overall the students gained a lot from the program.

Engaging, Creating and Transferring
STEM skills at BSC
Our students need STEM skills today and into the future to be successful life-long learners. Our Year 7 Academic Enrichment students have demonstrated these skills by accepting the task to design and create QR Codes to be displayed in our Belridge Bindi Bindi Garden.
Students researched the task, made decisions based on current constraints and future technology options and created digital QR Codes for individual plants growing in our developing garden. The technology is adaptable to the changing needs of learning areas; currently displaying summary scientific information and some recipes which are utilised in Home Economics where students cook with the native ingredients sources from the garden. Students were required to consider the size of the final codes and the material used to professionally produce the label to ensure they will withstand our outdoor conditions. After the codes were professionally printed, students organised and labelled the final product before attending a Masterclass in Design and Technology to drill and attach the codes to the current rio structure. The result is outstanding with students involved in every stage of problem solving, design, construction, production and installation. Thank you to all learning areas, in particular, Home Economics, Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Design and Technology and Media Arts.
When you are next walking through the Belridge Bindi Bindi Garden, take some time to notice the native plants and appreciate the work and effort which goes into every aspect of this evolving space by students and staff at Belridge SC.
If you would like to be part of this project, please come and join the Belridge Garden Gurus Team, led by Dr Werner, who meet on Monday during Break 2 in the Belridge Bindi Bindi Garden. Currently the Fashion and Design students are designing a t-shirt for this group of volunteers. Another example of community spirit at BSC.

Resources Technology Showcase
Our Year 8 and Year 9 Academic Enrichment students recently attended the Resources and Technology Showcase held at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in June. Students stepped inside the world of technology and innovation in W.A. and were captivated by current trends and future possibilities. They had the opportunity to engage with STEM activities, hear from students about what STEM has provided them and see the importance and value of STEM skills in action. The interactive exhibits proved to be a huge attraction as students queued for the potential to win prizes at various displays.
This whole day experience also expanded the minds of Ms Ferreri, Mr Blakeney, Mr Anderson and myself, who supervised our bright and curious students from Belridge SC. I look forward to engaging students in future prospects in this ever-changing field of STEM.

Uniform Supplies
We wish to update you on the current position regarding the supply of uniforms to our school.
Due to the location of where uniforms are produced and the impact of extended lockdowns due to COVID 19, the uniform shop has been experiencing shipping delays due to reduced operational productivity of worldwide ports and the availability of containers.
If there are any unforeseen delays that may affect stock holding for the 'back to school' selling period, the uniform shop may find it necessary to ration or restrict the number of items initially supplied in some products. This measure is to ensure that uniforms are available to all students until further stocks arrive.
We have been assured that the uniform suppliers are closely monitoring production and deliveries and are confident that uniforms will be available for the new school year.
Should the position change, we will notify you as soon as we are made aware.

Stagestruck!
Are you looking at ways to nurture your child? It is proven that the benefits from drama and play acting can assist in a child's development in the following areas:
- Public speaking
- Teamwork mentality
- Confidence and self esteem
- Increase memory
- Improve concentration
- Use creativity
- Use imagination
- Form new friendships
If you have ever been involved in a play or drama skit you will know that it is an exciting and unique experience. At Stagestruck, we aim to open imaginations to the world of storytelling and expression, a chance for children to think outside the box and find their creative spark. This is an opportunity for you to give your child a voice, a chance to shine, sing, dance act, star in our play, be a performer!

The Design & Technology Department are ALWAYS on the look out and in need of recycled timber. If anybody is pulling down timber or has access to building or construction timber that they could donate to the school, it would be greatly appreciated. The material could be dropped off to the Design Technology department or contact Lazo Njegich on 0432 478 123 to arrange collection. Thank you.
