Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2020 school year. It was great to welcome back our returning students and greet our new Year 7s, all 208 of them! As always, the first few weeks can be a challenge for our students, adjusting to a new routine, making new friends and finding their place. However, it has been pleasing to see how quickly they have adjusted and settled into high school life.
Firstly, a very warm welcome is extended to our new staff to Belridge SC: Scott Davies, Stuart Rutter and Madison Dimitroff - Mathematics, Andrew Blakeney - Science, Chloe Tsoulis - Visual Arts and Theresa Wilkes - Home Economics.
Our Year 12 cohort from 2019 certainly did the College proud and achieved some great results. The WACE achievement rate was 98%, which is higher than both Like Schools and State Schools. Students who completed their ATAR resulted in a median ATAR of 66.4 which was lower than our like schools, however, all of our students who planned to progress to university gained entry into their chosen course. Our Strong OLNA results saw 99% of our eligible cohort achieve the minimum standard in both literacy and numeracy. We also had 34% of our students leave with two or more VET qualifications, placing our students in a strong position for competitive entry into the TAFE sector and employment.
On Tuesday 11 February it was a pleasure to host our first ATSI Afternoon Tea. We had a great turn out from our students, parents and staff and started to put some new plans in place to address the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework in more depth at the College.
We also held our BYOD parent’s seminar for our Year 7 families, which focused on supporting parents to assist their child in navigating their new machine and developing skills around the use of Microsoft 365 and the internet.
Week 3 and 4 saw the delivery of our Elevate sessions revision seminars for both our lower and senior school students. Getting good study habits in place early and forming a routine will really help our students develop the skills they will need to be successful in the future.
Following the release of the new Department of Education Strategic Plan “Every student, every classroom, everyday” and Focus 2020, our new business plan is ready to be released. It will be presented to the board during our next meeting in week 6 and then made available to the public.
Being new to Belridge SC family, I am amazed at the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff across the college. The level of care and support for the wellbeing of our students is second to none. It is an absolute pleasure to be here and I look forward to sharing the Colleges journey with you through this newsletter.
Sharon Lyon
Principal
I wish to welcome all Year 7 students and their parents/caregivers to the Belridge Secondary College community. Currently the Year 7 enrolment numbers stand at 208, which is fantastic for the College. We have also had new students from Years 8 - 12 join the school community transferring from other schools, interstate and overseas. I also welcome these students to Belridge SC.
Active parent/caregiver involvement is paramount to the educational achievement and success of the student. I look forward to establishing and maintaining strong and productive working relationships with all our new families to help achieve positive and rewarding outcomes for their children.
School Dress Code
I spoke to all Year 8 and 9 students at their first assembly. I was impressed and proud on how smart all the students looked in their school uniforms. Belridge SC has a policy that “if you are not in school dress, you are not in the classroom”. I encourage all students to maintain this high level of appearance and to take pride in themselves and their school.
Year 7 Elevate Education Programme
On Monday 17 February all Year 7 students participated in workshops during Periods 1 & 2 conducted by Elevate Education. The workshops were titled Study Skills Kick Start and Junior Management Time and were presented by university students. The presenters established instant connections with the students and made the sessions fun, interactive and informative. I believe this programme will further assist the students in their transition to high school. A Year 7 parent evening was held on Tuesday 18 February from 6.30pm to 7.30pm facilitated by an Elevate Education presenter. Parents were presented with strategies to how best support their children both academically and socially.
Year 7 Welcome Barbeque - Wednesday 4 March
Many parents/caregivers took the opportunity to view the school during the 2019 Open and Orientation days. Invitations will be sent to attend the Year 7 Welcome Barbeque to be held on Wednesday 4 March from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. This is a great opportunity to meet staff and other parents/caregivers in an informal setting. We always have a fantastic roll up and it will be great to meet as many new families as possible.
Year 7 & 10 Immunisations
Immunisation forms for Years 7 & 10 (2020) were distributed and returned to the school late last year. Email reminders, with attachments, were sent at the start of this year. If you wish for your child to be immunised they need to be returned directly to the City of Joondalup.
For Year 7, the immunisations are conducted over two (2) rounds on the following dates:
- First round Thursday 27 February;
- Second round of immunisations Thursday 17 September
Year 10 immunisations will also be conducted on Thursday 27 February.
Please note these dates in your diary as there are no catch-up sessions. Students absent on the day will need to get vaccinated through their local doctor.
Year 7 & 9 NAPLAN 2020
All Year 7 and 9 students will be participating in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in May. These are compulsory national tests. Parents will receive through the mail later this term information regarding this testing program. Students will prepare for these tests in their Mathematics and English classes, becoming familiar with the format, language, response types and time constraints. Student performance is important as success in NAPLAN 9 determines whether students need to sit the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (OLNA) in Year 10. The Western Australia Certificate of Education (WACE) – Years 11 & 12, requires students to achieve a prescribed minimum standard in literacy and numeracy to graduate. Students who achieve Band 8 in NAPLAN 9 for both literacy and numeracy are deemed to have met this minimum standard, so therefore will pre-qualify for OLNA and do not have to sit it. Students will have two opportunities in Year 10 to attain this minimum standard. Further opportunities are available in Years 11 & 12 if necessary. Achieving Band 8 in NAPLAN 9 removes the pressure and stress in Year 10. Whereby in the past some students may not have tried their best in NAPLAN, I encourage all students to recognise the importance of these tests. I ask parents and caregivers to discuss these tests with their children and impress upon them to do their best.
Student Electives – Middle School
All Middle School students undertake an elective taster course. Students complete three electives in Semester 1 and three different electives in Semester 2. Students in a specialist or elite program should complete the full rotation of electives over two years. Unfortunately, due to timetable constraints, students completing two specialist programs cannot complete any of the electives. However, this will not impact on their subject selections when entering Year 11.
Mario Pisano
Vice Principal – Middle School
Welcome back to 2021 - it has been a smooth start to the school year and I have been impressed with the application of the vast majority of our senior students so far. There are a few matters that I need to highlight, so we can continue to have a successful year.
Year 12 ATAR Students
Wednesday Period 5
All Year 12 ATAR students (students with 3 or more ATAR courses) must stay at school to study in the library.
Year 12 Non-ATAR and Year 11
Students and parents are reminded that Period 5 on Wednesday is an important part of senior students' programs. Students should not make permanent arrangements to be out of school at this time, because attendance at organised talks, information sessions and study sessions is compulsory.
Also, Year 11 and 12 students who fall behind in their assessments will be required to attend catch-up sessions in the library. To benefit the Senior School, the library is not available to Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 students at lunchtime and Period 5 on Wednesdays.
Senior School students will be informed when they are required to stay. If they are not required, they can leave at the start of Break 2. If they want to stay, they need to work and study in the library. Once they leave the school, they cannot return that day.
Year 11 ATAR Students - Wednesday Period 5
All Year 11 ATAR students have been given a timetable by Mr Pisano when they need to stay at school Wednesday Perod 5 to study in PAC2. Also, Year 11 ATAR students were presented with seminars to improve their studying and time management skills. Feedback from most students was positive and they picked up some valuable tips and strategies.
Year 12 Students Sitting External Exams
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) offers special examination arrangements to candidates with permanent or temporary disabilities who sit the WACE examinations. Provided full medical reports are provided, SCSA may grant special arrangements for conditions such as:
- Vision or hearing impairment
- Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia or dysgraphia
- Medical conditions such as ADD/ADHD, illness, psychological, physical disability or fine motor disability
- Conditions such as diabetes.
Full details can be found at
https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/assessment/examinations/special-provisions
Applications must be submitted through the school to SCSA by Thursday 1 April.
If you have any questions or think your son/daugther may qualify, please contact Rob strickland at the school as soon as possible.
Year 11 Students
Please read the above. It is important that parents and students notify Mr Strickland if any of the above conditions apply to them.
Road Safety & Etiquette
It is a good time at the beginning of the school year to remind everyone about road safety. The speed limit on Gwendoline Drive is 40kmph and when traveling through the school drive to a crawl. Also, could I request that all parents (and I have made the same request of staff) use the correct ENTRY and EXIT driveways at the front of the school. Finally, please be aware that school buses need to have sufficient room to make their way through to the bus stops. Thank you all for your consideration.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)
We will be holding a VET and Workplace Learning Information evening on Monday, February 24 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in the college library. This evening is designed mainly for ‘new’ parents of Year 11 and 12 VET students to help clarify some of the procedures and requirements of VET. Please register your attendance by Friday 21 February if you are planning to attend.
It is important to keep in mind that our school based VET programs are delivered on behalf of partner RTOs (Registered Training Organisations) in written ‘third party agreements’. The written agreement with a third party includes:
- the names of the RTO and the third party
- the start and end date of the agreement
- clauses detailing both parties’ obligations under the agreement, for example, making clear that:
- any training and/or assessment is provided in the name of the RTO, not Belridge SC.
- Belridge SC cannot advertise any VET courses in its own name
- students are enrolled as students of the RTO
- qualifications and/or statements of attainment are issued in the name of the RTO, not BSC. Students who successfully applied for a place in externally run VET certificate courses attend the course at the relevant RTO, and are resulted and certified by the RTO. Results are provided to Belridge and contribute to WACE achievement.
All students are expected to keep up with the delivery and assessment schedules given to them by our teacher / trainers. Students who are at-risk of falling behind are notified each week, and are expected to attend the library during Wednesday ‘senior school flexible learning’ period, from 1:30-2:30 pm.
ADWPL – Workplace Learning
ADWPL is voluntary for VET students, as we found little benefit in forcing students who are not interested nor work ready to find a placement. Over 50 year 11, and 15 year 12 students have taken up the option, have met Mrs. Fuhrmann for their initial induction, and will keep working with her over the next few weeks to complete relevant safety inductions. Placements for our first ADWPL ‘block release’ in June should be finalised by the end of Term 1. Please contact Meredith Fuhrmann with any questions you may have about this.
OLNA
Please check the timetable detailed below for Round 1 OLNA scheduled to run from Tuesday 3 March to Friday 20 March.
All students required to sit any OLNA component have been individually notified, and will receive a personalised timetable soon. All Year 11 and 12 students needing to sit an OLNA assessment will also be required to attend the library from 1:30pm to 2:40 pm on Wednesday afternoons. We purchased licenses for State of Mind’s Skill Builders, available at www.OLNA.com.au . The college has paid for the use of these excellent online ‘skill builders’, and all eligible students are welcome to set up a ‘free’ account using the school’s code which is available from myself and the college library staff. I strongly encourage all students to make use of these excellent resources prior to the assessments.

About Us
The Student Services Team support the health and wellbeing of students across the school. Both the Middle and the Senior School have a Head of Student Services who work in conjunction with the Year Coordinators, School Psychologist, Chaplain, School Community Nurses, along with all our teachers to foster a positive supportive environment for all our students. We have a number of exciting events coming up to foster this environment.
- The Peer Support Program consists of a group of Year 10 students who have trained to become Peer Support Leaders. These leaders will be working with our new Year 7 students on an eight-week program, titled Strengthening our Connections.
- The Joondalup Mobile Youth Truck will be in the school regularly this term at lunch time with two youth workers happy to have a chat and integrate into our school community.
- Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Did you know we have 52 different cultures represented at Belridge SC? This message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. We will be celebrating this day in Week 7 of this term.
Attendance Matters!
Students at Belridge SC are expected to be attending at or above 95% in line with The School Education Act 1999, where research clearly shows that students must attend school on a regular basis to gain the maximum benefit from schooling and optimise their life opportunities. Missing just 1 day per fortnight (during an average 10-week term) would see a student just meeting these requirements, so please remind your child that every day counts. Students must have 90% attendance to hold their Good Standing.
Absence Procedures
Absences for part of the day, all day, or for several days, must be covered by a written explanation, SMS or a phone call from the parent or guardian. These notes must be dates and specify the reasons for the absence(s). They should be brought to school by the student either before (if known) or returning from a period of absence and handed to the Form Teacher or the Student Services Office. It is essential that students be at school by 8:40am each day. They must also ensure that they are prompt to all classes.
Dress Code
We ask that all students wear the correct uniform, which includes the appropriate school polo top and plain navy short, skirt, skort or paint of a modest length. Leggings, jeans and logos larger than a 20 cent piece and stripes are not permitted. Students in incorrect uniform will be asked to borrow a student services uniform and change for the day.
Good Standing Policy
Belridge SC has a Good Standing Policy that applies to all students. A loss of Good Standing can be due to a variety of reasons related to attendance, behaviour of school work. Please refer to the Parent/Student Handbook located on the website.
Contact Details
As noted earlier, there are a number of staff on the Student Services Team who assist staff, students and families to have a successful and enjoyable time at Belridge SC.
The main point of contact for each year group is the Form Teacher or, for more urgent serious matters, the Year Coordinator. The role of the Year Coordinator is to oversee the personal development and wellbeing of the students in their care. This involves the policing of the school uniform and the counselling of students in terms of any personal, academic or school problems they may encounter. They also liaise between students, teachers and parents when the need arises. Additional duties involve attendance checks, year level assemblies, awareness of bullying prevention, year level functions, student recognition, collecting student work for absent students etc. If you have any questions about your child’s progress, health or the strategies the school implements to deal with issues that may arise, please feel free to contact the appropriate members of the team.

Writing Enrichment for Talented Young Writers
Blisters formed on callused fingers, however, smiles illuminated the faces of students at the end of the first Talented Youth Writers’ Workshop for 2020. Internationally acclaimed, Australian award winning author, Barry Jonsberg, challenged students with stories and writing activities for the entire day at The Literature Centre in Fremantle. Students, shared their writing with their peers from across the state and received valued feedback from Barry. Many are inspired to complete their stories they developed throughout the day.
These enrichment students are excited to learn more about writing from experts at the next workshop scheduled for Term 2.

Home Economics
Dear Families of Belridge,
We recommend a container no smaller than 900mL capacity, has an airtight seal and will hold liquids without leakage. A re-usable fork from home is also recommended. Most supermarkets and department stores like Kmart and Big W will have these (pictured below) for $10 or less.
Madelaine Jones
Home Economics Teacher
Mathematics
I am extremely pleased to say that we have had a great start to the 2020 school year. We would like to welcome Miss Dimitroff, Mr Rutter and Mr Davies to the Belridge Secondary College Maths Team.
2019 WACE Mathematics ATAR results show that our Year 12s performed very well. Mathematics Specialist and Mathematics Methods scaled mean score was higher than the like schools and Mathematics Application also did well.
This year, six of the Year 7 classes will follow a general Mathematics program and one of the Year 7 classes will follow a modified pathway to meet specific student needs. However, in Years 8-10 there are three Mathematics pathways to cater for students’ numeracy needs based on their past performance and ability.
By now Parents should have received their child’s Mathematics Program and the Course Outline. Also, the teachers are in the process of contacting Parents to introduce themselves. Parents can access their child’s Mathematics Programs, copies of some of the relevant lower school textbook chapters, as well as weekly homework exercises through Connect.
If you have any queries or concerns regarding your child’s progress in Mathematics, please contact either your child’s Mathematics teacher or myself. We look forward to working with you in 2020 to ensure your child achieves personal excellence in all endeavours.

CTF Scholarship - Certificate II in Plumbing
For the past few years Belridge SC has hosted and made available its resources in the Design & Technology Learning Area to enable the Certificate II in Plumbing course to run. Our facilities enable students to undertake studies to complete this course, run every Friday.
The course is run by lecturer Peter Zappa in conjunction with Sharlene Kidd, the Schools Programme Co-ordinator and Tania Turner the Liaison Officer. Along with numerous students from other high schools, four Year 11 Belridge SC students are undertaking this course; Patrick Clitherone, Ryan Koetzen, Mason Thomson and Riley Hoyland. Students complete their theory and practical work in the Belridge workshops and also undertake work experience during the year.
As part of the course, the students receive all their protective clothing supplied free, consisting of safety boots, fluoro shirts, gloves work pants and shorts. Many of these students intend to pursue a future in the plumbing workforce.

Hello from the Community Health Nurses
The Community Health nurses, allocated from the Child and Adolescent Health Service to Belridge Secondary College, are Deb Lawrence and Jo Savoury.
Community Health Nurses are members of the Student Services Team and provide a valuable service to various high schools across the region. We work on different days at each school and our availability at Belridge Secondary College can be accessed at Administration or through Student Services.
The school health centre is a place where adolescents can drop in or make appointments to discuss health and wellbeing issues. Some of the health issues that young people present with include; physical health concerns, infection and injuries, mental health, relationship problems and support, sexual health, nutrition and alcohol and other drugs.
Students may independently seek assistance from the Community Health Nurse, but can also be referred by parents and staff. If you would like to refer your child to the Community Health nurse, please do not hesitate to contact us through the school reception.
Our service is not designed to provide care for sick students, or supply medications and medical supplies. In the event of students becoming sick or sustaining an injury whilst at school we ask that you provide the school with emergency contact people (three contact people is preferable) who would be available to arrange transport, care and treatment for your child if required.
Most importantly, if you have a student at Belridge who has an ongoing medical concern, such as Anaphylaxis, Allergies, Asthma, Diabetes or any other diagnosis that may impact on their school life, please ensure that the school is informed and the necessary forms are completed every new school year to ensure that we are aware and can administer the appropriate treatment, if required. This is especially important where there has been a change to the care required.
The links to action plans for diabetes, asthma, allergies and anaphylaxis are below. If you have not done so already, please print the relevant action plan and complete it, with the assistance of your medical professional if appropriate, and provide the school with a copy.

Retirement of Vincent McMaster
At the end of 2019, our long serving Volunteer, Vincent McMaster retired. Vincent has been at Belridge SC for nearly 18 years, helping our students with their literacy skills, homework and also having a chat and playing board games. Vincent is a kind and caring man, who has tirelessly worked with our students. If Vincent had been employed, he would have had two lots of long service leave while at Belridge, but he generously gave his time to our school for many years. As a thank you, we gave a Vincent a book voucher as a memento of his time at our school. We will miss him very much and wish him well in the future.
