C8 Camp, 2025

Term 2, Week 3 brought us the much-anticipated C8 Camp 2025!  115 excited Year 8 students along with 7 staff loaded onto buses on the morning of Wednesday, 14 May 2025 to head to Woodman Point Recreation Camp for three days of adventure and fun.

1_Group.jpg

Woodman Point Recreation Camp is situated on the historic quarantine station which was used to isolate those who arrived by ship suffering from serious illnesses including the Plague, Smallpox and the Spanish Flu. Many buildings, including the hospital, crematorium and dormitories are still existing from the days of the quarantine station. In fact, our students stayed in dormitories that were once used to house those with the deadly Smallpox disease, which has thankfully been eradicated through modern medicine.

Staff and students arrived at Woodman Point to find perfect sunny weather, which would last the entire trip.

Students were then split into seven groups represented by a colour and were allocated a staff leader. Groups then designed a team flag and went for a tour of the grounds.

After checking in to dorms and eating lunch, students began their guided activities run by Woodman Point staff. Over the three days, all students had the opportunity to participate in archery, orienteering, beach sports, team building, raft building, quarantine station tours and abseiling.

We had a variety of meals on camp including spaghetti bolognaise, open burgers, cooked breakfast and a Mexican taco night. Students all ate together in the main dining hall which was a great opportunity to get together - albeit quite loud at times!

On the Thursday afternoon, students competed in a ‘capture the flag’ game. All teams were also assigned a song relating to their colour. Examples included Pink Pony Club, Purple Haze and I'm Blue to name a few. In the evening, after dinner, students then got back into their teams to compete in an 'escape from the quarantine station' night activity.

In between all these back-to-back activities, students still found the energy to play soccer, basketball, cricket and football as well as play cards, watch the AFL game with Mr Hollows and even watch a movie on the big screen.

On Friday, after completing the two final activities, students packed up and loaded back on the bus for the trip home. I trust they all slept well that evening after an action-packed three days away!

I would like to thank the Year 8 students for their exemplary behaviour over the 3 days. Woodman Point staff commented on how respectful and engaged our group was. I would also like to thank parents for committing to the investment of camp for their child. Events like these are becoming rarer in schools and it is a Belridgee Secondary College tradition that I hope we can keep for many years to come. I, myself, got to know the cohort a lot better and have already noticed the increase in positive rapport amongst our group since returning.  Finally, I would like to thank the staff who attended the camp and looked after our Year 8 students. They all took time away from their own families to make this event as comfortable and engaging as possible for this great group of young people. C8 camp is just another reminder of the great school community we all belong to here at Belridge Secondary College.

Don't Forget!

A reminder for Year 8 students that the team who attends the Week 10 assembly with the most members wearing their wrist bands will receive a special prize! We will also be acknowledging individual students for their positive attributes displayed across the camp.

H2GP

On Saturday, 3 May 2025, I accompanied 17 students to Atwell College for the H2GP practice race, where students were given the opportunity to test their H2GP RC cars with lap timers on a simulated race circuit.

Students have been working on Tuesday afternoons, as well as over the school holidays to get to this point.

Testing at the practice race was positive and we are looking forward to fine tuning the cars and pit stops to be race ready on Friday, 6 June 2025.

Year 8 - AEP Science - Adopt a Beach

On Wednesday, 7 May 2025 the Year 8 Science AEP students participated in the Adopt a Beach excursion at Waterman's Bay Beach. The objective of the geography-based fieldwork was to identify coastal erosion hotspots, the causes of erosion, other coastal processes and the type of coastal management defences available. Students were provided with a range of materials to protect their sandcastle designs against the erosional forces of the ocean and had to consider hard and soft engineering design options. Thank you to Ms Warren and Mrs Manning for accompanying myself and students.

Flora and Wetland Waterbirds Survey Walk

On Tuesday, 29 April 2025 students from the 9.1 Academic Enrichment Program went on a Scientific Excursion to Herdsman Lake, to learn about the unique ecosystem and how it functions. The Year 9’s started the day with partnering up and taking part in a ‘Flora and Waterbird Survey Walk’. They walked around the lake, tallying up how many times they saw a plant or bird species, and adding the total up at the end, noting the diversity of wildlife at the lake. Whilst gathering their data, they were learning how the ecosystem functions, and the effects that humans have on it.

At the completion of the walk, students stopped for a short recess, before starting on their next assignment.

Water Quality Testing/
Macroinvertebrate Identification

Students then grouped up and were split either to test the water in the lake against some tap water or discover macroinvertebrates living inside of the lake. Water testing consisted of students grabbing a sample of the lake water and comparing it against tap water.

The students recorded their findings in the following categories:

  • Temperature
  • pH Levels
  • TDS (Total Dissolved Salt Parts)
  • Dissolved Oxygen
  • Nitrate Levels
  • Phosphate levels
  • Turbidity

Results were then compared between the lake and tap water from a guide explaining if the water is habitable for marine life.

Meanwhile, students over at the macroinvertebrate identification were filling up trays with lake water, scooping up some mud from the lake floor, combining the two together and scanning in the mud for invertebrates such as glass shrimp. Students would then transfer these specimens into a water filled ice cube tray to study said specimen they found and release them back into the lake.

Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre

Students ended their day by looking inside the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre. They came across many different animals such as lizards and turtles and looked at birds on the lake from the birdwatching level. Students could also take part in interactive quizzes. Overall, it was a fun day, and we thank Mrs Green for organising the excursion, and Mr McDonald and Mrs Orr for attending.

Year 10 Geography

On Tuesday, 27 May 2025, 10 HASS1 completed Geography fieldwork, investigating the historical, current and future land use of Joondalup City.

We visited sites throughout Joondalup CBD gathering data and evidence around land use, environmental quality, traffic and pedestrian volumes. Students completed surveys at each site, collecting information to analyse back in the classroom. Students will now evaluate, reflect on and present findings for the development, current use and future vision of Joondalup CBD.

Year 11 Geography

On Friday, 4 April 2025, the Year 11 ATAR and Year 12 Geography General students conducted bushfire fieldwork in the Perth Hills with Mr Stevens and Mrs Green. The objective of the day was to investigate how fuel load characteristics affect bushfire behaviour.

1.jpg

Students interpreted and mapped data sets in the classroom, analysing factors affecting bushfire rate of spread and how prescribed burn mosaics on the landscape impact fire scars. Students then walked out into the bush, collecting fieldwork data from two sites; one which had recently experienced a bushfire and another which had not. Data for aspect, topography, canopy cover, gradient, fuel load/depth and vegetation type were collected and analysed by the group. Students completed the day conducting a building assessment of the Perth Hills Discovery Centre (a historic building) and planning how to defend the centre.

Discover the magic of reading

Register your child for the Premier's Reading Challenge! From 7 April to 27 June 2025, students from Year 7 to Year 12 can discover the joy of reading and log their progress for a chance to win weekly prizes. The goal is 12 books for Years 7 – 10 and 6 books for Years 11 & 12.

Establishing a life-long love of reading for pleasure is important in the development of students’ literacy skills and future life outcomes.

Parents, guardians, teachers, education assistants, siblings, study buddies and classmates all play an important role in encouraging students to develop a love of reading. Here are some tips that can help with this:

  • make time to read each day – make sure this time is fun and exciting
  • suggest books, authors or themes your students may enjoy
  • re-tell stories that you have enjoyed
  • ask students to make book recommendations to others in class
  • for students with language backgrounds other than English, encourage them to read books in their background language.

Visit premiersreadingchallenge.wa.edu.au for more information or see Ms. Lang in the library.
