New VET Certificate Course for Year 11, 2024
AUR20720 Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation

Mr Andrey Hontscharenko, one of our highly experienced Design & Technology teachers, has recently been approved to deliver AUR20720 in partnership with Registered Training Organisation (RTO) 121314, Australian Institute of Education and Training Pty Ltd.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who perform a limited range of tasks relating to identifying and inspecting mechanical and electrical components and systems of light vehicles, heavy vehicles, outdoor power equipment, bicycles, marine craft and motorcycles. This qualification also covers the skills and knowledge required to perform minor maintenance and repair of an automotive vehicle body.

Mr H, as he is known by students, recently completed an industry work placement at Balcatta Car & Commercials automotive workshop to maintain his industry currency, and he is looking forward to working with the group of motivated students who will be selecting the qualification as one of their six Year 11 courses in 2024.

Student Council Update

Following a very busy Term One, we were finally able to spend some quality time this term in our Student Council meetings discussing our direction for the year. We met with the Principal, Mrs Lyon, early in the term and went through some pressing issues in our school community and what we can do as a leadership team to assist in a positive environment in line with our school values. The Year 7’s Councillors have hit the ground running offering perspective and direction in our weekly meetings.

We have finalised our questionnaire on seating, which will be running through Humanities classes in the last two weeks of term to receive student voice on seating and shelter at the school. At the start of next term we will be offering our suggestions box in electronic format through student emails, thanks to the initiative of Year 10 Student Councillor, Joshua Willson.

Students Excel in Sustainable Oceans Competition

Students from Belridge Secondary College have excelled in the Sustainable Oceans Competition run by Education Perfect. The competition was held in celebration of World Ocean Day, and students from all over Australia and New Zealand competed to learn about the challenges facing our oceans and to take action to make a difference.

Belridge SC placed third in Western Australia and sixth in Australia in the 501-1000 student category. Top performing students received gift cards, annual membership, and free entry to AQWA. Congratulations go to Tyler Neagle, James Lee, Niamh Edwards, Sapphire Wintergreen and Kellan Davies.

The competition was a great opportunity for students to learn about the importance of protecting our oceans. They learned about the threats facing our oceans, such as pollution, overfishing, and climate change. They also learned about the ways in which they can take action to protect our oceans, such as reducing their consumption of single-use plastics, eating sustainable seafood, and supporting ocean conservation organisations.

The students of Belridge SC are to be commended for their efforts in the Sustainable Oceans Competition. They have shown that they are passionate about protecting our oceans, and they are committed to making a difference. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Sustainable Oceans Competition!

White Card Training

On Wednesday, 24 May Paragon Corporate Training came to Belridge Secondary College and delivered the White Card training course to 12 of our Year 10 students.

The White Card training course is a nationally recognised Occupational Health & Safety Construction Induction. Anyone working on a building, construction or mine site (whether fully qualified, training or on work experience) must have a White Card. Once this qualification has been achieved, the card is valid for life.

All 12 students were successful and each now has a White Card that will enable them to complete work experience and determine a possible future pathway(s) for themselves.

Try-A-Trade Program

Nine of our Year 10 students are currently engaged in a three day Try-A-Trade program at the Clarkson campus of NM TAFE (Monday, 19 June to Wednesday, 21 June).

The Construction Training Fund is sponsoring this program which is an excellent opportunity for students to try their hand at three types of ‘Wet Trades’ – Bricklaying, Plastering and Tiling. The experience is invaluable in assisting students gain an awareness of their interest and suitability for various areas of the building & construction industry.

The students are extremely interested, attentive and engaged. Many were surprised at their ability to build a brick wall and render a space, and students are looking forward to learning the basics of wall and floor tiling.

Lego Club Boost!

The Lego Club was recently provided with additional funding to purchase more kits to further entertain our students.  Audra Keeble (EA and Club Coordinator) and her great negotiating skills managed to obtain $700 worth of kits with a great discount of $100 off from our local Big W and came away with a bumper purchase to expand our club’s collection.  A big thank you to Audra for your time and passion invested and to Big W for supporting our club. Let the construction commence!

Belridge Beats 2023

Belridge Beats DJ classes have officially resumed for 2023 with some new faces as well as students returning from previous years. On Friday 31st March, some of the students from our classes gathered to officially 'unbox' some of the new DJ equipment that has been purchased for the classes from Store DJ. This includes speakers, cables and carry bags, as well as a Denon Prime 4 which is currently one of the most popular and most feature-packed professional standalone DJ systems. This equipment will be used for classes as well as for school events where our students will be putting their skills in to practice.

Coming up in this year’s class our students will continue to learn about various aspects of professional DJing including:

  • Music selection and organisation
  • Sound and lighting equipment set up and maintenance
  • Music mixing, including beat mixing and more advanced techniques such as turntablism.

In addition to the new equipment, we have secured support for our 2023 classes from some high-profile industry sponsors who will be providing various resources for our class including free music and training resources. We will also be hosting guest presenters from the industry to visit some of our classes.

Belridge Beats DJ Classes are held weekly after school with students attending a Tuesday or Thursday class. Students who are interested in joining the program can grab an information/permission form from the Library or Student Services.

Belridge Beats - Guest DJs

Over the years that the Belridge Beats DJ classes have been running we have been fortunate to have some fantastic guest presenters for our class. In June our classes were paid a visit by Adam Warbrick co-founder and owner of Envy Event Group, one of Perth's biggest and most highly regarded DJ companies. Adam works as a full time professional DJ and shared some of his experience with our DJ students. The class was also joined this week by veteran DJ Kym Ireland (AKA ElKymbo).

Year 8 AEP HASS: Mrs Jade Wright

Geography: Landscapes and landforms: We love getting out of the classroom and what better topic than landscapes to discover the unique Belridge landscape. We learned that by looking carefully at the flora, fauna and shapes in the land, that Belridge can be classified as a flat landscape, with elements of coastal. We could tell this by looking at the horizon, classifying trees and grasses and walking the slow slope out the front of the school. We also perfected our sketching skills this term, concentrating on erosional and depositional coastal processes.

Year 9 AEP HASS: Mr Simon McDonald

History: Industrial Revolution: Task: Create a government report on the living conditions during the industrial revoluation. Students were taken through a series of primary sources both visual and written and following this took on the role of an inspector to conduct their report.  Within the reports, students identified the poor living conditions relating to areas such as housing, sanitation and water supply and how in turn this resulted in the spread of disease. Throughout the task, students were able to develop their source analysis skills whilst also engaging with key course content.

Year 8 AEP Maths - Mr Wayne Anderson

The Year 8's have been learning how to write their name!  During Term 1 in Mathematics the Year 8 students have been researching how to draw lines and curves on a graph using different equations. By using these curves and lines they were able to spell out their name in a graphing package called Desmos.

Year 9 AEP Maths: Mr Scott Davies

    Y9AEPperimetre.png

Year 8 AEP Science: Mr Alex Gibbs

Energy: Renewable and Non-renewables: Task - Create a Solar Oven. Students have been learning about the various types of energy. We are now concentrating on renewable versus non-renewables and the effects of choosing one or another on the planet. In groups, students are creating a solar powered oven and considering shape and materials to increase its ability to work. Students are challenged to consider accessibility of the oven itself and variables that influence the reliability of the oven.

Year 8 AEP English: Mr Daniel Bertoli

Biographical Profile and Presentation: After studying the literary genre of biography, students worked to develop their own biography of a person important to them. The research component of the assessment required students to communicate with family or members of the school community and develop a biographical profile. Throughout the interview process, students managed to take notes and eventually compose their findings into a structured and engaging biography which was presented in front of the class.

The final product provided a captivating insight into the lives of students and acted as a worthwhile experience for the class in terms of researching skills and speaking and listening capabilities.
