Academic Life & Learning

Student Council

Our 2023 Student Council started the year full of ideas and ready to go! With 25 members and the Year 7’s yet to come, our meetings have been very busy and have included field work, capturing photos of areas around the school that need extra seating, debates around current issues and lots of fresh ideas to improve our Belridge community.

On Thursday the 2nd of March, the entire student council attended the Perth Youth Leadership conference and they were immersed in the culture of the theme which was ‘Tomorrow’s leader, is today’. Speaking to real life leaders and hearing success stories, including the founder who is only 20 years old, they came away feeling inspired and really understanding that every leader is different.

This year, the student council is meeting with the Principal Ms Lyon twice a term to discuss relevant issues and ideas in our community. Our first meeting was a huge success, coming away with a few ideas and promises that will be eventuating next term, so watch this space.

This year Belridge Secondary College is proud to announce that Year 10 student councillor, Aansh Patel, has nominated for the WA Student Council. Representing Belridge and Western Australia is a fantastic opportunity for Aansh and we wish him all the best for his nomination.

On the 21st March, the entire student council attended the annual GRIP leadership conference at the Perth Convention Centre alongside over 30 other secondary schools. They were so excited to choose their own tutorials this year and were upskilled on topics like; having difficult conversations, making everyone feel included, running whole school events and changing cultures in the school environment. They have come away with a stack of new ideas so watch this space! A big thank you to Belridge teacher and school board member Mikaela Shirley for accompanying us and being a part of our leadership journey.

Year 7 Academic Enrichment Program - Science

Safety skills have been highlighted and Year 7 AEP students learned the importance of safely using a Bunsen burner earning their Bunsen burner licenses. Students have also taken part in making a non-Newtonian fluid, creating slime as part of their topic on the Properties of Matter. Currently, students are studying the different ways to separate matter. They have been experiencing a fun and interesting Science course.

Thank you to our wonderful laboratory technician Lauren James for preparing the science activities.

You are what you eat!

Year 7 Home Economic students have spent the term getting to know the procedures required in the Home Economics kitchen. They have learnt new cooking skills, investigated what makes a good recipe and the importance of the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. They have then used all their newfound knowledge to devise and produce a Healthy Breakfast. When producing their breakfast, they needed to demonstrate effective collaborative and communication skills as they were required to prepare their breakfast alongside their partners.

Next term students will move into the Textiles component of Home Economics where they will learn basic hand and machine sewing skills and investigate the properties of different materials.

Year 9 Career Taster

BSC's first Year 9 career taster for 2023 was a great success! On Wednesday 22nd February, Associate Principal, Louise Hall and I accompanied 14 students to NMTAFE Balga campus to participate in a range of braiding and curling activities in NMTAFE's fully functional commercial based salon.

While we were there many members of the community were having hair treatments and the students did us all proud. The level of engagement was exceptional with students not wanting to leave their mannequins, hair clips and heating wands, as they were intensely attempting to master the activities they had been given to practice. Most importantly, students were provided with invaluable information regarding VET in Schools options for secondary school, in the industry, via NMTAFE/private RTO's and apprenticeship options.

Our key lecturer, Mairead, also explained the many employment opportunities in the industry, including the numerous employment situations she had experienced over her ongoing career. Of particular note, was the huge increase in the popularity of barbering and the many employment opportunities available if a Certificate III apprenticeship in Barbering is pursued.

Everyone Belongs...

2023 marks the 20th year of Harmony Week and is an opportunity for all Western Australians to celebrate our vibrant multicultural State.

This was acknowledged at Belridge SC on Tuesday 21st March with several events across the school. Staff came together to celebrate their cultural backgrounds and share traditional cuisines. Students participated in form activities also, with Music students participating in a Japanese Taiko Drum workshop, followed by a fantastic performance for the whole school.
