Saving Student Reports!

Years 7 to 10 Semester 2 student reports would have been emailed to parents on Tuesday 14 December.  Please remember to save a copy each time you receive your child's report as the link is set to expire 4 weeks after delivery.

Thank you.

ABCN Workshop – Build a Bridge

On Tuesday 16th of November, we departed at the end of period 2 and had to rush to the bus stop, check-in to the WA Safe app and get going.  After we made it to the venue (after getting lost a few times) we were half an hour early so we walked to a grassy area near RAC arena and had a snack.  We then walked back and when we walked in, we saw the pizza!

We were then put into groups depending on our name tags colour and ate our pizza.  We then started to plan how to build our bridges, which had to hold a block of Cadbury chocolate.  We brainstormed ideas and then got to work to build our bridges.  We had $50 to purchase our materials and build the bridge, which was a bit of a challenge, but we all managed it and all of our creations withstood the weight of the chocolate bar, so we were able to eat and share the chocolate around!

We then ran to the bus stop (nearly missing the bus!) and then got on CAT bus back to the train station to head back.

FIRST Lego League Competition

Earlier this year, a group of Year 7 and 8 students began working on the FIRST Lego League Challenge. This involved coding a Lego robot to complete missions on a game table, as well as a research project. The theme for this year was ‘Cargo Connect’ and involved looking at ways to transport goods more efficiently.

The Krazy Koderz worked hard on coding their robot to complete as many missions as possible, including unloading a cargo plane and lowering a bridge. They struggled at first, having to learn the coding program but soon figured out the best way to approach the challenge. They also developed a possible solution to the issue of not receiving up to date tracing information on packages. The solution was to have a QR code attached to the package that would be scanned at each transit area and an instant email or notification would be sent to you.

All of this work led to being ready for competition day. On Saturday 27 November, the team competed against 30 other teams in the regional competition at St Stephen’s School, Carramar. On the day, the students had to present their project to a panel of judges and had 3 opportunities to score points in the robot challenge. It was a great day, where the team worked together, tweaking their coding in between the bouts to gain more points and interacting with the other teams.

Although the robot didn’t always do what was planned, it scored highly in some of the rounds. The team learnt a lot from the experience and had a fantastic day.

‘I have learnt lots from the Lego League experience. I have learnt to code with Spike Prime, what gracious professionalism means and to work well as a team. All in all, the Lego League was a fun and education experience and I encourage other students to join next year.’ – Matthew Kay

Santos Science Experience

Earlier in the year, three Year 10 students had the opportunity to attend the Santos Science Experience. This Australia-wide event is held at many universities across the country for aspiring scientists to see first hand the real-life work of a real-life Scientist.

Beau Greig, Heungin Jung and Thomas Kay spent three days at ECU Joondalup and various other locations being immersed in doing research, carrying out experiments and looking for solutions to sustainability problems.

The Rotary Clubs of Northbridge and Joondalup supported their participation. Rotary clubs are always keen to support the development of young people, and this was a wonderful opportunity they provided for students at our school. The three students  subsequently gave a talk at a Rotary Club of Northbridge meeting, where they gave a brief overview, then some details of the Experience and astounded the audience with their exploits. One of the students had taken photographs and video footage of the activities which brought their talk to life. Questions were fielded from the floor, which the students handled expertly.

Congratulations to the three students on their passion for science, and in their high-level conduct in preparing for and delivering the talk, and for having the courage to put themselves forward for the experience.

Thanks to the Rotary Clubs of Northbridge and Joondalup for their kind support of our students, and for the parents for supporting their students to take advantage of this opportunity. Thanks also to Mr Brad Kay who provided transport to the presentation and Mrs Glynne Bartle for all her behind the scenes work leading up to the event.

If you have any thoughts about your own future as a scientist, make sure you speak to your science teacher. Maybe you too could go to the Santos Science Experience.

Young Business Entrepreneurs

This semester, the students from the Year 10 Business class, have been engaged in a course based on the Young Change Agents $20 Boss programme. The students were allocated $20 from their subject fees to develop a product or service, which they then had to promote and sell to staff and students. The class engaged in a range of activities prior to their product launch designed to teach them skills in Creativity and Innovation, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Communication, Digital Literacy, Financial Capability, Presentation and Social Enterprise.

The students created a range of products and services including organising and running a Minecraft tournament, hand painted and decorated door stops, stationery sets, eco-friendly handmade bees wax candles, tote bags, a range of 3D printed objects, lucky dips, Christmas items and games. The students sourced the materials they required, created spreadsheets to work out the costings, including labour, profit margins and the quantity required to be sold in order to cover the costs. I am very pleased and proud to announce that the students raised $409.60 from their market stalls which has been donated to the school’s Christmas Appeal, to benefit our local community. This money will be used to purchase food items which will help families over the Christmas period.

Year 7 and 8 Reward Day

On Monday the 13th of December students with good standing in Year 7 and 8 participated in reward activities during periods 3 & 4. The Student Services team organised several inflatable obstacle courses and novelty events, along with a free sausage sizzle. The Student Services team would like to acknowledge all those who made these events run so smoothly:

  • Year Coordinators Narae Howard and Jodie Grieve for organising and coordinating the event
  • Phil Leenman - School Chaplain for organising and cooking the BBQ.
  • All staff who helped supervise the event and look after those students whom weren’t invited.

Year 9 and 10 Reward Day

Students in Year 9 and 10 also with good standing were treated to an excursion to Adventure World which proved to be a huge success.  These events come together as always as a result of a team effort. Thanks to:

  • The form teachers for collecting permission forms.
  • The incredible office staff for their assistance with processing payments and other assistance.
  • Staff in attendance.
  • The excellent behaviour of the students - they had a great time!
