Mathematics
Pi Day was celebrated by our Year 8 Maths class on March 14th (3/14) because the first 3 digits of Pi are 3, 1 and 4. Pi (Greek letter “p”) is the symbol used to represent the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. We learnt that Pi is a decimal that goes on forever, without stopping. Activities included:
- a 3 minute challenge to list as many words as possible beginning with the letters “pi”;
- measuring the distances around various objects including paper plates and milk bottle lids;
- drawing a Pi skyline. This involved creating a skyline by graphing the numbers in pi. Some of the cityscapes look fantastic; and
- eating Oreos to round off the celebration!
